  1. Hi Jo and hi Tasha! Welcome.
  2. Usually I ll remember most books quite well, but when I ve read something I was really in to I can remember things in much clearer detail. For instance I read Hannibal by Thomas Harris ages ago but I can remember the story so clearly. I often find myself trying to tell people how fantastic it is but most people have only seen the movie (as I had done before I read it) and are put off. The story is very different to the film, and much better I might add. I find myself emtionally caught up in stories like that and I think thats why I remember it.
  3. I m trying to plough through Bleak House, and its not the story thats not interesting its just the drawn out nature of it. I m so used to reading something shorter! I want to read it though...I think.
  4. I know kb.marsh, I m a bit of a chicken when it comes to horror stories too! Saw that play though, it was good and scary. I remember seeing another play typically I cant remember the name of it but it was these men in a pub and they were telling each other ghost stories. Really good. I was fine in the theatre it was the walk home that freaked me out! Recently read Dracula, very proud of myself, couldnt put it down. That could be because I want to sleep soundly at night again. Muhahaha...
  5. I love the John Rebus series, also Hercule Piorot and Miss Marple, they re old school but I like them. I ve never read any of the Inspector Morse series but I watched the tv series. I tried to read Cadfael once but read the first page and put it straight back down. I must go and root out one and give it another go.
  6. I read Death in the clouds not too long ago, it was excellent easy reading! I find the books are often in charity shops and bazaars, at least where I am.
  7. Maybe ALW will do a Simon Cowell on it and realise hes made a mistake before its too late and get Rachel back, (although where is young Ray off X factor now). I think you're both right, they were lucky with the first two shows.
  8. "After the Funeral" Agatha Christie,"Vampire Hunter D (Vol2) Raiser of Gales" Hideyuki Kikuchi,"The Secret" Rhonda Byrne. "Hannibal" Thomas Harris, "Resurrection Men" and "Let it Bleed" Ian Rankin, "The Bookseller of Kabul" Asne Seierstad, "The Lord of the Flies" William Golding, "The Danger" Dick Francis and "Dracula" Bram Stoker. Hannibal was a magnificent read, as was Dracula, really enjoyed both of them.
  9. Howdy, welcome!
  10. Hi Papermoon, you re very welcome!
  11. I didnt watch tonight and boy am I glad, I cant believe they voted Rachel off! I agree Jessie has a long way to come and is one of the weakest but on the other hand the panel treated her in an appalling way. She annoyed me from the start, the small town girl, top o' the morning act was tres irritating but for John to attack her like he did saying she was like a fish "flip floppin around on deck", when he was commenting on another performance was terrible. That got people backs up and made them vote for her. I mean both he and Denise have it in for her but they are too harsh in their comments to seem fair hence under dog status for Jessie. Also think Jodie is over rated, just cant see her as Nancy. Rant over (for now ).
  12. Well, I was watching this BBC three show with Ian Rankin ages ago and he was talking about when he first got started writing the Rebus novels (detective thriller type books for anyone who doesnt know his work). He decided to write about a case where two girls have gone missing. He started his research by visiting his local cop shop and asking about how they d go about investigating a crime like that. So, a detective took him into an interview room to talk to him and started asking him questions. Alot of questions. Rankin suddenly realised he was actually the one being interviewed, turns out a similar crime was just being investigated by the police and they suspected him because of the nature of his questions! He had quite a job of explaining that he really was just an author because at that time he wasn't published (I think). Weird.
  13. I know what you mean and its not like he (JB) needs it hes been appearing in roles where being wrinkle free isnt exactly a priority I still like him though! As for Jesse shes good but I dont think shes Nancy and the "Elvis" lip thing is so annoying shes does the same kind of preformance whatever song shes given. I dont understand Jodies popularity either shes just good cabaret. BH is a bit of a leer, I realise hes got stage experience but was there no one else they could get? ( Apologies for rant )
  14. Hi Davo, welcome!
  15. I love Harry Potter, I think it is because the story is good but also and perhaps more so because the characters she uses to tell it are not flawless heroes. Like sometimes Harry would be trying to cope with the general human struggle of grief and growing up while simultaneously fightin against evil it shapes the story into something more than just being about evil and good but about the grey areas in between. Like, for example, when the root of Snapes dislike and yet protection of Harry is explained it gives the character more depth and therefore makes it more engrosing. Anyway I ll stop going on now!
  16. I love Jesus Christ Superstar, Some Like it Hot (fantastic!) The King and I to name but a few. I d love to see Phantom of the Opera, I ve heard great things about it. Usually go to see them in my local theatre I d probably never see them otherwise.
  17. I m a bit obsessed with Ian Rankin, the Rebus novels, the characters are so well rounded I find myself drawn back to find out what happened next in his personal life as much as in the cases. I also have a bit of an obsession with Thomas Harris, again its the character of Hannibal and the way its written that draws me in. J.K Rowling rules too.
  18. Maybe she wasn't, there was alot of head shaking and stalking around the stage by a few of the girls trying to 'rough' it up. I love Graham Norton and John, I dont think that Denise was too impressed by Fran mentioning the fact they worked together either.
  19. Hi everyone, glad to be part of this little community! I m Irish, and I enjoy reading Thomas Harris, Ian Rankin, Agatha Christie, J.K Rowling and some harder stuff as well. Just trying to make a start on Bleak House, not so bad so far but the size of it is putting me off.
  20. Just watched the results show this evening and Amy ( I think thats the ungainly, stomping around the stage girl somebody was referring to) got sent home. She was pretty stompy and that green dress was WAY too tight but I still think she was more of a Nancy than the blonde one. Those jellied eels looked disgusting! The first Oliver is so angelic looking.
  21. I think where possible its great to buy and pass on second hand books. Whenever I get a book in a charity shop or at some kind of sale of work and maybe see a name inside the front cover, or maybe even a date, its nice to think of someone else enjoying this book, like a weird booky connection between me and someone else I ve never even met. (I need help I know). I d never intentionly damage a book though!
  22. I know just what Prospero is saying about the whole-reading -on-the-train thing. I think its because I m always nosy about what other people are reading and what that could tell me about them and I therefore think that they are drawing some conclusion about me from what I m reading. Its probably ridiculous but anyway. Guilty pleasures, well I remember reading Riders by Jilly Cooper and trying not to be seen with it, bit of the book snob within coming out! I m proud to be a Harry Potter fan though, sadly I am a band wagon hanger-on in that regard. Didnt catch on to the whole craze until the movies came out. At least I feel bad about it though
