  1. Happy reading, Sousa! I have both War and Peace and The Myth of Sisyphus on my TBR pile. They're very different in length, but I suspect they'll both be challenging reads in their own way!
  2. Wow, congratulations Abby! Working from home is pretty awesome (she says, sitting around in her PJs yet again ). Athena, that sounds like a horribly uncomfortable day. I hate it when you just miss out on the being the first to the counter and then you have to wait ages to be served. It was rude of the customer service person not to hurry things along when he knew you were waiting. I probably would have eventually asked the other person to help me. Sorry to hear about your meal as well. I hope it goes better next time you eat out. I like to go out as early as possible so I'm leaving by the time most people are arriving, but it depends on who I go out with. My family are all early eaters, but my friends usually eat later.
  3. Weird and cool!
  4. I"m not sure that anyone would expect it to be anywhere near as good as To Kill a Mockingbird, but I think it'll still be worth reading. Melodious, thanks for the link to the article. It didn't do much to allay my concerns, but the historian's comments at the very end were a bit reassuring. At least we've now heard from someone other than her lawyer!
  5. Ooh, lucky you, Maria! (for both pieces of news )
  6. Perhaps me? I posted a long message about it on Facebook, saying that I was concerned that they might be taking advantage of Harper Lee because she's rather senile these days.
  7. Thanks for the advice about The Guest Cat. I'll keep it in mind.
  8. I'm surprised they're only printing 2 million copies. Surely they must know that the demand will be much higher?! Yes Raven. Read it. Now.
  9. I checked my shelves earlier, and I've actually taken it off and added it to my pile of 'books I no longer want to read'.
  10. I won't re-read the first book, but I'll join you for the second and third books.
  11. Haha, yes. The guy who was holding it had right in front of the mayor's ear! What else is a groundhog to do but bite it?
  12. Ooh, you've chosen a great one to start with, Athena! It's awesome. I read the prologue of Guns, Germs and Steel (I feel I should point out that it was a long prologue).
  13. I like to think so!
  14. I'm watching a triple dose of The Big Bang Theory. It's very popular over here. I'm not sure if there are episodes every day, but there always seems to be a run of three episodes whenever I'm looking for something to watch. No complaining here!
  15. I probably wouldn't even have noticed if you hadn't pointed it out! I turn off (or at least significantly tone down) my eye for grammatical/spelling errors when I'm 'off duty', and I'm especially forgiving of friends. Anyway, it would be hypocritical of me to criticise others because I know for a fact that I make a lot of errors in my posts (I'm especially fond of leaving random words out of sentences for no particular reason ). It must mean that it's the club of the rotters (so multiple rotters own, or are members of, the club). Does that in any way fit in with what you're reading? Great reviews, especially of The Guest Cat and Violet to Vita. I don't know anything about Violet and Vita, but I love the excerpts you included in the review. It sounds like a passionate read. And I really want to get to The Guest Cat soon! Now that I know someone who has read it, can you please tell me (in spoilers, I guess) if it has a sad ending? I've been worrying about that.
  16. I think Labyrinth is one of the books I've had on my TBR pile the longest. I just can't muster any enthusiasm for it. I don't even know what inspired me to buy it in the first place!
  17. Ooh, wonderful! I'd love to read these letters...preferably in book form. I love books of letters and it would sit nicely alongside my beautiful hardback of Jane Austen's letters.

    Pets - 2015

My friend named her Pip for the same reason...because she was a pip squeak when she was little! The name stuck, but the size of the dog didn't. Aw, happy adoptaversary! I have a small box full of cat toys—most of which Jasper has never played with. For a couple of years I even bought him little stockings full of toys for Christmas. I even wrapped them (and then 'helped' Jasper unwrap them). But now I know that it's all pointless and he doesn't care much for toys. The only things he likes playing with are all the things he shouldn't be playing with (i.e., my stuff). Perhaps cool, funny and terrifying, all at once!
  19. I saw on the news that the groundhog bit the mayor on the ear in Wisconsin. Mwahaha! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhnUC4bQd8I&spfreload=10
  20. It was published in The Australian.
  21. Apparently it was written a while ago and the author has since died.
  22. You wicked thing! I hope for your sake that Poppyshake has reached a point where she can laugh about it.
  23. No, no! I would never dream of asking you to start it now. I just wanted to know your thoughts. I could put it off for months even, if you want. I definitely don't want you to start it when you're not in the mood. It should be when you feel ready. I just thought you'd like to know that it was selected, and I'll be ready when you are. You should ease off the blini, woman, and then you won't have such slow mornings.
  24. Aw, that's great! I'm so glad you're enjoying your reading. And those 20 books include at least a few biggies! Well done. xo
