  1. Happy reading in 2016! I love your reviews and look forward to reading many more. I must say, I really didn't care for Wide Sargasso Sea.
  2. Her books reflect reality well, don't they? Sorry. You set it up so nicely that I had to do it.
  3. I finished with a short read by AA Milne: Now We Are Six.
  4. The Huffington Post has published a list of 32 great new books being published in 2016. To be honest, I haven't heard of most of the authors, but I was happy to see that China Mieville has a book coming out on 12 January called This Census-Taker.
  5. Happy New Year everyone! How did you ring in the new year? I was happy to have a quiet one at home by myself. I watched the Sydney fireworks on TV and tried to comfort my cat when (illegal) fireworks went off close to my house. Straight back to work for me today.
  6. Sorry I've created extra work for you, but I'm glad you liked my idea. I haven't watched any more of Dexter either. I have a deadline on the 3rd, so I might get back to watching it on the 4th.
  7. Happy reading in 2016, James! I hope you have a better reading year this year, and I hope to see you around the forum a bit more *nudge nudge*.
  8. Happy reading, Bobbly! Loads of great lists there. I look forward to reading your thoughts throughout the year.
  9. Happy New Year everyone! What book/s are you reading to kick off the new year? I'm over halfway through A Boy Called Christmas, and I've started Al Franken's Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them.
  10. Great summary, Gaia. I love your graphs.
  11. I'll try to wait patiently. I'm glad you understand! It'd take me a week (at least!) to go through and comment individually on every book I want to comment on. Hmm, I'm not sure. I think I've taken photos of them before for you, but then forgot to send them to you. He has a black and white border collie named Molly (she's so cute and loves pats). She's about 13 or 14 now. His partner has two dogs: a big black one named Maverick (I've forgotten the breed) and a brown one named ... oh gosh, I've forgotten. I think it's a cattle dog. Or kelpie. I have such a bad memory! I went over to the big dog?! Wow, I'm impressed with myself. I suppose I'm not as intimidated by that breed. If it was a german shepherd or rottweiler I would never have approached it. I went to the vet down the road from my place today to pick up some cat food for Jasper (he gets dental problems so I have to buy special food for him) and the waiting room was full of dogs and their owners (who were staring at me) and there was a cage at the end of the room with two little kitties in it. I went past all the dogs and straight to the kitties, then felt a bit rude for not patting the dogs on the way. They seemed harmless, but one of them was HUGE. I didn't pay attention to the breeds because I only had eyes for the kitties. Aww. I'm going to visit some shelters next week and I'll more than likely adopt another cat. Can't wait! I want a playmate for Jasper. Seeing this reminded me that I should check my own signature (I'd forgotten what it was!) and change it. And I noticed that the link in my sig links to my 2014 log...I never updated it to 2015! It's now 2016 here, so my sig is officially two years out of date. Oops!
  12. Gosh, I'm glad we don't have that saying here. I would have become blind a long time ago from all the pokes in my eyes.
  13. I just meant that people don't seem to talk about it, which to me means that maybe it's not as appreciated as it should be. Even I forget to talk about it when mentioning favourite movies. It seems to 'fly below the radar'. Ooh, great stats! It would be interesting to compare the ratings you gave to the debut authors (what I mean is, did the risk pay off?) I loved your reading summary. It seems like you had a pretty good reading year (75 books is an awesome total—three-quarters of the way to 100! Something about that number appeals to me.)
  14. Great answers, everyone. Chalie, I've now added Johnny Got His Gun to my wishlist. Thanks! I also want to read Marie Kondo's book at some stage. I've started getting rid of some of the 'stuff' I have around the place, but I think her book could really help me (although mostly I think I'm beyond help!)
  15. Happy reading in 2016, Lara! You have some great books on your TBR pile.
  16. I used to update BC immediately after finishing a book too, but somehow it started slipping my mind! I update it straight away on GR though, so at least I have the information in one place for when I'm ready to update BC.
  17. Good idea, Gaia, although with your reading rate you could probably squeeze in two more books if you wanted to. I'm about halfway through A Boy Called Christmas and loving it! I'm supposed to be working (yes, on NYE), but I've been having trouble putting it down. Then I decided to choose my first book for 2016 from my book jar (which I've topped up for the new year), and I chose Al Franken's Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them. It's supposed to be great, and very funny, but it's about American politics, so I hope I can follow it OK.
  18. Happy reading in 2016, Chalie! We have quite a few TBR books in common, so I'll be following your log with interest. Can't wait to see pics of the alcoves once they're done. I'd love to have something like that!
  19. I still have all of my Baby-Sitters Club books (probably around 200 books). In my late teens/early 20s I thought of giving them away, but thankfully I was too lazy to follow through. I'm so glad I kept them! I'll never part with them now. In fact, I've started collected them again to fill in the gaps. I've also kept my Goosebumps, Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew books.
  20. Happy to answer it again. My top 5 were: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule Millennium #2 and #3 Stieg Larsson
  21. My favourite authors would have to be: Jane Austen Harper Lee Vladimir Nabokov Charles Dickens Agatha Christie Patricia Highsmith John Marsden Walter Moers Norton Juster JK Rowling LM Montgomery
  22. I love the pulp fiction cover of Joyland. I've seen some classic books repackaged in a similar way recently, and I've been tempted to buy them even though I already own the books in other editions. I love anything 'pulpy'. I didn't know What's Eating Gilbert Grape? is a book! How cool! Can't wait to hear what you think of it. I've seen it many times as well, but it's been a while since my last viewing. It's such an underrated movie, I think.
  23. Happy reading in 2016, Gaia! You have the most organised reading log by far on this forum. In 2016 I hope to spend a bit more time organising my collection in Book Collector. I'm afraid I rather neglected it this year (or for at least most of the year). I haven't even been adding in the most basic information when I finish each book (date read, rating)! I think it's good that you're reducing a bit of stress on yourself by not doing so many challenges and by focusing on just having fun. Good for you!
  24. Aw, that's a shame, Mona. I know what you mean, though...I watch far too much TV when I could be reading instead.
  25. Hooray! Frankie’s new reading log is here!! As usual, you have loads of great books on your TBR pile and wish list, and many more that I also want to read. There are so many books to comment on that I don’t know where to start, and I would mostly just be saying ‘I want to read this too!’ or ‘Read this. It’s great!’ (Or 'Avoid this. It sucks.' ), which would be boring of me, so I won’t do it. Humph. I won't hold my breath. Ooh, you've gone fancy with the alignment on one of those posts! I think the section about TBR books by genre is new, right? Great idea! Hey, I recognise those doggy pics! I took some pics of my brother's dogs when I went to visit him last week just so I could show you. I'll post them in the pets thread at some stage. I hope you have another fantastic reading year, my wonderful friend!
