  1. Happy reading in 2016, Claire. Great review of A Boy Called Christmas! I totally agree with all of it.
  2. I've been reading Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them. It's written by a former writer of Saturday Night Live, so it's very funny.
  3. I received my first book of the year yesterday: Jon Ronson's So You've Been Publicly Shamed. Can't wait to read it!
  4. I've already watched it a second time, Ian. It's definitely good to watch it more than once to pick up on other stuff.
  5. Thanks Athena! I'm really enjoying it so far. It's very funny. LOL. Thanks James! That thread of must-read authors was a great idea. I'm glad I remembered to link to my reply. Thanks Claire! I likely won't be keeping it up this year. I'm going to the book fair next month (it falls on my birthday—how can I not go to a book fair on my birthday?!) So I'll probably be buying more books in one day there than I bought in all of 2015, but I'm OK with that. Thanks Inver! You too.
  6. I never remember Fantastic Fiction when I'm looking for book information. Like Athena, I always use Wikipedia (first choice) or Goodreads.
  7. Aw, that's a shame. I was actually really excited to see it tie in with the contemporary series. I thought it was brilliant!
  8. Thanks for the info on Maigret, Willoyd. That's very helpful!
  9. Curse you, woman! Now I need to go and work out my stats! I doubt there'll be many debuts, but maybe I'll be surprised. When I go to a bookstore I just look for names that are already familiar to me. I rarely pick up a book by someone whose name I don't recognise (unless it has a particularly appealing cover or title—shallow, aren't I? ) ETA: Debut debut debut debut debut debut debut debut debut.
  10. Hi Jean and welcome to the forum! Good to have another Aussie here. We have one or two fans of the Bloomsbury set here. Have you read anything by or about the Mitford sisters?
  11. Good on you, Raven!
  12. Yay! I just went and checked the book activity thread and your thread but you don't appear to have posted your thoughts. Hurry up, woman! It's not often we read the same book around the same time. I finally finished my massive job and I've just realised that although it's getting late on Sunday night here, it's still early Sunday for y'all, so I can still sort of join in on the read-a-thon! I'm going to get my book...
  13. Thanks, you're very kind! But I won't count it, if only because seeing it on my book lists for the rest of the year would be extremely depressing. I love my job, but I like to try and forget each paper as soon as I've finished it.
  14. Unfortunately I'm spending this weekend reading a thesis for work (hey, can I count that as a read? It's 265 pages!), but I'm planning to give myself a couple of days off early in the week, or perhaps next weekend, to do my own mini read-a-thon. I'm so pumped for the new reading year that I don't want to lose momentum before I even really get started (if that makes sense). Have fun everyone!
  15. LOVED IT!!! Can't wait to watch it again.
  16. But then the movie would only be 10 minutes long, and kind of pointless. Stop questioning the plot, Raven.
  17. Cool! Thanks for working that out. It is a very interesting stat, isn't it? I'm not sure that I could be as adventurous with debut novels, unless it has been read and recommended by someone else (like you!) first. You can be my guinea pig, or royal taste-tester, so to speak.
  18. Noooo! Hush, Raven. Interstellar was awesome just the way it was, I thought.
  19. Ooh, and the Sydney Morning Herald has published its long list as well. There's a bit more of a focus on Australian writing, but also a lot of international stuff.
  20. Yay! The Guardian has put up its wonderfully long article of new releases by calendar month. Check it out here.
  21. Ah, I like this idea! I think I'll make a list somewhere of the books that I don't actually want to take off my wishlist, but that I know I won't be buying anytime soon. Then I'll keep my main wishlist for newer recommendations and new releases. That's probably making it extra complicated, but I'll be happier, I think. Thanks for the idea! I saw that list! I'm impressed that you typed them all out! Like Frankie said, money is definitely an issue. But then again, I always manage to find a few dollars for the books I really want, which I guess shows that certain books that have been on my wishlist for years are not as important to me as others!
  22. Happy reading, Willoyd! You have lots of great lists there. You're making excellent progress in the 1001 list. I'm interested in reading a Maigret novel one day. Do they have to be read in order? I have one on my TBR pile, but of course it's not the first one (it's #6, according to your list).
  23. I've finished my first book of the year: Matt Haig's A Boy Called Christmas. What a lovely, lovely book! I adored the story and the artwork. It was sad in places and quite funny in others (Miika the mouse was a wonderful character!) I'll definitely be re-reading it during many Christmases in the future. Thank you so much, Kay. A few days ago I went through my book jar and removed the books that I read in 2015 so I could top it up with new books that have made the list for 2016. (Most of the books I read off my priority list last year weren't physically chosen from the book jar—I just went ahead and read them, so I had to fish them out of the jar to make sure I don't choose them again this year!) So yesterday I picked my first 2016 book from the jar: Al Franken's Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them. It's a book about American politics and it's supposed to be hilarious. I just hope I can follow it, because I'm only familiar with the bigger names in US politics, and I'm pretty sure this book delves deeper than that. I also don't know much about the levels of government in America (I have trouble sorting out my own! ) The main reason I'm interested in reading it is because it's a book from my Gilmore Girls challenge. The book is rather long so I'll probably be reading another one or two books alongside it. I'm quite happy with my start to the reading year.
  24. Ooh, I was excited then, but I checked my profile page and it says I joined in 2007, so one more year to go! It'll be my ninth anniversary next month. Fanks! Nope, I just keep talking about it but never get around to it! Helter Skelter and The Stranger Beside Me were the two true crime books that I most wanted to read, and now that I've read the latter, hopefully 2016 will be the year of HS! I desperately want to read Under the Skin this year too. I don't think I'll even wait for the book jar for that one. Thanks! I've got some more work to do on that post. I'll be cheekily copying your list of yours and Kay's favourite books (but I believe yours has the books that the three of us have in common, so I'll need to double-check the lists to see if there are others that you both have that I don't, if that makes sense). I've also reinstated my 1001 Children's Books and 501 Must-Read Books, which I haven't included for a few years, so I have to go over those as well! Thank you! You too, my darling! xo
  25. Well well well...this is interesting! I managed to read more books that I acquired last year. Who would have thought our positions would ever change?! You've got me quite interested in Jen Williams' The Iron Ghost, which I suppose means I'll be adding two books to my wishlist. Was TIG as good as the first book?
