  1. I've been long tempted to read this one. Ah well, go on! Chuck another on the tbr pile. What's one more book between friends.
  2. My daughter has it at the moment. Want me to send you it when she returns it?
  3. Yes. Water for Elephants I loved -- couldn't put it down, in fact. Have you read it? Breakfast was good too though somewhat influenced by the fact that I had seen the film beforehand. I like Capote's style of writing.
  4. For me, anything that dosen't have Johnny Depp in it! No, seriously, I don't like The Deer Hunter either. I also don't like Twister/Twisted/Hurricane/Eye of the Storm, whatever it's called with that girl from ?"As Good As it Gets" where she chases hurricanes. The Matrix made my head spin, in fact any sci-fi fantasy films rewire my head. I cannot follow them at all. But that's not to say I hate them.
  5. " I am merely copying, word for word, what was printed in the State Gazette today: " "We" by Yevgeny Zamyatin.
  6. Ohh, Thank You! It's always nice to have a friend : ) Hope all's well with you and yours. I've had two peaceful and relaxing days off just taking it easy. Trish

  9. Precisely! I get really thrilled and excited about seeing, touching, holding, having, buying new books. I don't drink, don't smoke, am not into make up, nails, hairdos, clubs, parties etc, own few possessions...Might sound weird and boring to some? But I'm happy. And content. Much of my money ends up in the local bookshop but I don't regret it in anyway at all. I get this too. Then people say "Go on! Try one. It'll do you good". Hmm, don't think anyone thinks I'm smart. Most peole I know say I'm not safe to be out on my own. I have had comments about certain books when I've been observed reading them. But to me they are just a good read, something that appeals to me. I don't consider myself, or anyone else for that matter, of a lesser or higher intellect based on what they read. I am okay with words but can't add 2 + 2. My OH can just about spell "cat" but is amazing with money and numbers. He reads the Daily Express. I won't read anything but a broadsheet. In life skills, general conversations, verbal expression and social interaction he knocks me off my feet! Who's to say who's smarter than who.
  10. That's interesting! I read the book then saw the movie. In the book the story choked me so much that as soon as I finished the last page I immediately went back and read the whole story again. Mind you I love the film too.
  11. Me too at present - - it's so boring! Can't wait 'till I can sit down and have a good read again : )

  12. Ahh. I see. Thank you. Never read any of his books but my brother loves them.

  13. Hiya. Thank you for the friend request which I have, of course, accepted : ) Hope you are well today and reading something nice. Trish.

  14. There's a book that opens with the sentences: "I do not love mankind. People think they are interesting. That is their first mistake. Every retiree you meet wants to supply you with their own life story". I don't even talk to myself anymore .
  15. Spangles!!! Mmmmm, remember the Old English flavoured one? <drool> Remember the advert for them? Remember Aztec bars? I wish they would bring those back. Trish, now seeing blackjacks, fruit salads, rhubarb and custard, pineapple cubes, fruit pips, cola cubes, milk bottles, pink shrimps, spanish tobacco, bazooka joe, glass sweet jars fully loaded . . . .
  16. Bwah ha!! ROTFLMHO. Hi Alison! When I saw your avatar I thought it was a picture of*you*. On sending a message to Gyre I see you there with the name of Alison. D'oh!! Am I dementing or what? Have a good evening, Trish.

  17. Hiya Paula!

How are you this evening? I am fine, a wee bit cold but fine all the same. Are all those tatoos yours?? If so, you have more than Johnny Depp. Ha! Trish.

  18. Hey! I get these too, both the broadsheets and the weird looks. Hmm, do you reckon everyone else is right? That we really are weird and have paranoid delusions? Maybe we should form a Weirdo Forum? What else do people get classed as being weird for liking/doing? A few of mine are: Not having a TV. Eating weird stuff like licorice, blueberries, nuts. Liking Classic FM and Radio 4. Loving my own company. Not talking a lot. Having few opinions.
  19. Ah, let him shout! You are a bigger man than he. And if he shouts only rude names I can imagine what his literary choices are. Bwah- ha! Join the club!!! even my sister says to me "You are always reading those silly weird books." (She's only 60!) I think in my head, to all who say things like this "Why should I be considered weird and different because of what I like????" People also think I'm strange because I won't do girly-girly things with them, because I eat seemingly different food to everyone else and so on. I was so excited the other day as it was nearing my day off and I could get in to town to collect two books I had ordered. When I announced this at work they just looked at me blank. I agree with Dr Seuss' quote: "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind". Me too! ME TOO. I've been in reading all day since 11-30 am and only had to speak with two people on the phone. Bliss!
  20. If feeling unchallenged by a book, but still have good faith in it and want to press on, I have skimmed pages and once or twice read the last two chapters to see where we are going If the book is to my liking I savour every delicious word. If I come across a particularly good passage I go back and read it again and sometimes again and again. Then I have to stop and write it in my quotes book so I can read it again at a later date. All my favourite passages in my books are flagged with post its, page markers or those clippy things one can now buy. Likely mad, sad, obsessive and compulsive but very happy with my book reading behaviour and not seeking treatment.
  21. I haven't read a Hemingway story for years and now I want to! (Trish throws a few more on her groaning tbr mountain). I remember loving The Old Man and the Sea, enjoying For Whom The Bell Tolls and somewhat struggling, but rewardingly so, with The Snows of Kilimanjaro. I highly recommend A Farewell to Arms which is my favourite. War, nurses, soldiers, wounds, love. . . captivates me every time.
  22. Ha! This is PRECISELY why I read. And I hate it when reality gets in the way . Seriously, I am *amazingly* easy going but can become really irritable and depressed if life denies or interrupts my reading. I have often questioned myself "Why *do* you read so much? What are you actually gaining from it all? Isn't it a waste of time?" I know people devoted to the gym, hairdresser, nail bar. . even one devoted to housework. I would never judge or criticise them for this. To my mind, no pursuit is a waste of time if it makes the individual happy and content. "Some people say life is the thing. Me, I prefer reading."
  23. Hi Paula,

I'm fine, thanks. Just been very busy at work with little time to spare but it's eased up a bit now and I'm enjoying chilling out. How are you? x

  24. I'm an anytime, anyplace, anywhere reader. I can tolerate any background happening. I can just shut the world away and And I could never end my day without having read a book! I get very agitated if I don't get my time to read.
