  1. Welcome back. Hope you had a nice holiday. Bahamas sounds lovely.

  2. I watched the first one and thought it was very good. However I have been quite stressed out and depressed this week and just couldn't face watching it because I thought it would be depressing. I've been opting for light comedy and things instead. If I had been feeling more normal I would have given it a try. Perhaps I will watch the rest it if it gets repeated.
  3. I'm really enjoying Out of the Silent planet. It's a re-read but I read it such a long time ago that I've forgotten all the details. It's a nice comforting read. I love a good bit of sci fi. I had to put down Dinner with Mugabe it was just too heavy for me at the moment. I will pick it up another time.
  4. Hi and welcome

    Hi and welcome
  6. Welcome Tam. Good luck with attempt 2 at uni. I dropped out of a degree at age 19 and then went back age 23 and completed my degree. I am so glad I did, it was such a good move.
  7. I love that Velveteen Rabbit quote. That's the second time I've come across it now, sounds like a lovely story.
  8. I agree Kylie. I did not see any overt racism, it just seemed of its time. Also the male/female seal thing didn't bother me either, it was based on animal behaviour I thought. The reason I didn't like the stories, was they just weren't engaging enough. They were simply 'ok'.
  9. Finished The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom last night. It was a really interesting and well written true story. Quite a page turner. 9/10
  10. Perhaps I am mistaken. I seemed to remember him saying something to the effect of 'if i witnessed a miracle I would put it down to random fluctuations of particles' or something. This is an outrageous paraphrase, but I thought it was something like that. I still dislike the man. I find him too polemical. I have much more respect for someone like Steve Jones who seems altogether more reasonable. It's just my personal opinion.
  11. Ha ha, I love mushy peas. I may even change my tag line...

Hi and welcome to the forum

  12. No it's The Hiding Place Corrie Ten Boom. I've not heard of the zookeepers wife, I'll look out for it.
  13. How about Cell by Stephen King? I haven't read it myself. It got mixed reviews on amazon.
  14. Sounds a good book. I'm very interested in that kind of thing. I may have to check it out.
  15. I am really enjoying the two books I'm reading, both non-fiction. One is a true life account of a woman who, along with others, helped hide Jews from the Nazis in occupied Holland. It is a fascinating and gripping read, written like a novel. I can't get enough of it. The other is a work of journalism, a series of interviews with family members, colleagues etc of Robert Mugabe. I'm not very far in yet, but so far it is proving equally fascinating. It's very readable in style, but I'm finding it hard to keep up with the African names and political references. It could do with a glossary. Still, it's very good. There is just something about true life stories that is so much more involving than fiction. That's what I find anyway.
  16. Awww. The story time dress up pics are so cute

  17. Hey, how are you?

I've almost finished short cuts, just one more story to go. I've enjoyed them. I don't quite 'get' all of them, but I've really enjoyed the writing. They grew on me the more of them I read. I think they're the kind of stories that are about the journey rather than the destination.

    Hope you're well x

  18. Ooh great question. I'm newish to the genre so haven't much to add really. Look forward to hearing other suggestions though. I will throw Dracula in to the ring however. I think it is a fantastic scary read today and must have been even more so in its time. How about the Pit and the Pendulum? Edgar Allen Poe. Tis only a short story though.
  19. I'd be happy to :)

Yes I do like Tenby, the beaches are lovely. It's quite small but lots of pubs and restaurants and the beaches are a stones throw.

  20. My boyfriend reads those. He enjoys them but says they are probably not of much interest to anyone who doesn't know the games, since they supply a lot of back story. He said I wouldn't like them and I believe him
  21. Ah yes - the theme tune that IS Sunday morning. Used to love that programme
  22. cold meat, cold new potatoes, salad, olives and onion bread.
  23. Oh we did that at school as well. It's a great poem. Dulce est decorum est pro patria mori *rushes off to find it and red it again*
  24. Yes I do enjoy classical music now and again. I love strings and right now I am really into Vivaldi's four seasons. I like Mozarts piano concertos, although I haven't listened to them for a long time. I think my all time favourite piece of music is The Dance of the Knights (Act 13) from Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet
