I go through reading deserts all the time (not since I have been here though yet). If I am struggling to read I simply have a break and don't try to force it. If you need some recommends for something half way between silly/heavy I am sure people here can help. I would suggest Alex Garlands the Beach (I know not everyone liked it) but I found it pacy with a good story and plenty of good quality writing. It has elements of adventure, is easy to read and has depth too. Or for something with humour in it why not something by Douglas Adams or Ben Elton (intelligent but light and funny). maybe Dirk Gently's holistic detective agency?

Oh nightmare! Can't you just stick it at the bottom of mount TBR? If you do take it make sure you take something you want to read as well. I hate to think of someone not enjoying their holiday books!

Excellent! Thanks Janet

Does it have to be books published in 2007? Or read in 2007? I've hardly read any contemporary books this year so far.

LOL. I have to admit it did make me laugh when I came across it. -
Herbs that is! I didn't know whether this should go in cookery or gardening but as its about indoor windowsill herbs for cooking I thought I'd put it in cookery! Parsley - whenever I've bought parsley, its ok for a few weeks but before long it gets infested with teeny teeny yellow mites that look like a fine dust on the leaves. Anyone know any remedies? Basil - I'm currently growing basil and some of the leaves get black dry patches on, not just at the tips but in the middle. Does anybody know what they are? And are those leaves OK to eat?

Yes. I forgot "Its a wonderful life" with Jimmy Stewart also Fight Club (I should really read the book) Alien (Great suspense - had my stomach in knots)

All the blood transfusion stuff made me quite queasy, I had to skim read those bits as I have a bit of a blood phobia. I am also quite curious as to what "making a toilet" is. Characters keep going off to make their toilets. Toilet is a euphamism for the loo isn't it. This must be using the original meaning which I assume means to freshen up. (Like eau de toilette) -
I need more bookmarks. I'm currently using a dog eared old leather one that I've had for YEARS. When I was younger I had a metal one with a butterfly shaped hook that hooked over the spine of the book. I wonder if I still have it somewhere.

Oh that's one of my all time favourites. Absolutely hilarious! I'm also a big hitchcock fan. I love Rear window and psycho. There's another really good Cary grant one where he works in a shoe shop (or is dating someone in a shoe shop) but I don't know the name of it. One of my all time fave films is the Wizard of Oz with Judy Garland. other faves are: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind Memento Being John Malkovich Oh and about a million others but that's all I can think of right now.

I loved The turn of the screw. Very creepy. Owen Wingrave is good too (another short story/novella) They send shivers down my spine though.

Hi Aimz - yea its great I am here Its weird to read the original having seen so many hammer horrors and TV adaptations etc over the years. Some of the lines seem corny - but only because they have been used so much ever since. "I am here to do your bidding master." Lol. Vampires are one of my scariest things so I hope it wont get too creepy

I've had a P D James on my shelf for some time now. I will read it one day I didn't know she wrote children of men. I missed it at the cinema but would like to watch it.

hehe - I'm loving Dracula (Only 100 pages in though) and I LOVED turn of the screw! My 5: White teeth - Zadie Smith - well written but I could not sympathise with any of the characters. They all seemed quite self absorbed. Gave up half way. Captain Corelli's mandolin - well written but dull, too long-winded and not enough pace for me. Gave up half way. The Mill on the Floss - George Eliot. Did it for A Level. Aaarghh!! The wives of bath - Wendy Holden. The most appalling drivel! The characters were gross caricatures and mostly very annoying. Ugh I hated it - utter nonsense. Frankenstein - Mary Shelley. Found the writing style quite annoying.

I did the same thing. I think a lot of folk do Thats very impressive. Do you go back over it sometimes? Glad to have you here. Hope you enjoy!

Well I finally started Dracula on Saturday and I am thoroughly enjoying it. It is SO gripping. I think I'm on chapter 8. I can't wait to pick it up again hopefully tonight. Will be very interesting to compare with Carmilla. -
I finished the Hobbit and have come to the conclusion that I have never read it before after all. (At least not fully). From about half way through all the vague familiarity had gone and the ending was a complete surprise. I was convinced I had read it in my late teens and had the plot all mapped out in my head (which was totally different to the actual one!) I must have taken vague memories of the book (that was read to me aged about seven) and merged it with bits and pieces of the LOTR films. Ah well, the memory is a strange thing!! I have now started Dracula and I can hardly put it down. It is fantastic and I am so glad I am finally reading it. I have meant to do so for ages and am at last catching up a bit with reading circle books! I tried to get Anne of Green Gables from the library yeesterday but couldn't see it. They were about to close so I didn't have time to search/ask about it. I'll try again next weekend. I wonder if they have any online search/reserve facility...

I've seen about the first dozen or so of these and have been really enjoying it. There seem to be less unanswered questions than Lost (which has started to annoy me)

What are your top 5 books? Very difficult Eay!
~Andrea~ replied to KAY's topic in General Book Discussions
I loved Wuthering Heights (I've only read it once, I wonder how it would stand up to a re-read) but I hated Heathcliffe character. I think that's one of the things that impressed me about the book, how much it made me get involved. -
