  1. I think its true in several senses. I often find reading very companionable. Your surrounded by characters at least. Your often confronted by people encountering obstacles and situations you may have faced in your own life or be facing right now. That can help you feel less alone in a very real sense. Also when you read a book often you are connecting in a sometimes very deep way with another human being, the author of that book.
  2. Well my review is due today and I have read just 100 pages of my book (not including intro). This week is busy until Monday so I'm going to read a bit more and give it a bash tonight. I don't feel i've given it my best shot though (but it wasn't exactly a page turner)
  3. Sometimes there may be the odd book that I think, Oh I REALLY must read that. I would like to get those essentials read, before, its too late I guess. But there are not many books on my TBR like that. Even then, I don't think it would bother me that much. Like FA says, I would be more worried about the things I hadn't done I expect.
  4. Well my penguin review is due on the 16th so I have just 4 days! I'm only about 90 pages into the actual book! It's either going to be late or the review will have to be based on an incomplete reading. I have made some notes though so I think I know pretty much what I want to say about the book. I'll be so glad when it's done. HP is tripping along nicely though, and makes a very nice antidote to the above.
  5. I had peanut butter on toast today . I'm really going to have to think of some more interesting lunches.
  6. 16, so I'm not really likely to hit my target of 25

    Hello

Hi Kaz, welcome to the site. Look forward to chatting with you.

    Er...hi

Hey there. An inventor eh? That sounds fun! I love your dad's description of three men in a boat! I really enjoyed that book, it's so funny. Welcome.
  9. Today I had my usual single weetabix. Keeps me going until I get to work where I have a mug of tea as soon as I get in.
  10. Cheese on toast and weightwatchers tomato soup. I'm not convinced about the soup. It is only 74 calories but tasted quite sweet and has artificial sweeteners in it which I don't like. I only picked it up because it is lower in salt than normal tomato soup. I probably won't have it again.
  11. I am good at resisting books in bookshops these days because I used to buy so many books and never read them. I figured I was wasting money so I stopped. I tend to buy new books now only after careful consideration, and save my impulse acquisitions for the library. Second hand books on the other hand erm ...
  12. I had porridge with a smidgeon of light muscavado sugar.
  13. Hi welcome back. Don't think we've met thought your name seems familiar... I've been here since Oct 2006.
  14. Lol yes! I wish it was something a bit lighter. It's a bunch of sermons and theology
  15. aromannie that was a great review. I am dreading writing mine
  16. Hi Kenny, great to have you on board!
  17. Hi Amber welcome to the site. You have come to the right place
  18. Thanks. I'm definitely starting to understand the appeal! I don't want to read my penguin classic
  19. I probably average about 20-30 pages a day. It's rare that I read more than 20 pages at bedtime (my preferred time for reading) but if i read during the day it tends to be more (I rarely do that, maybe once a week). Also I don't read every night, maybe 4 or 5 nights a week, it depends how tired I am. So on average it must be about 20-30 pages a day. I get through probably just under 2 books a month. I did read animal farm in one go, but it's very short and easy to read. That was a long time ago, when I was young and had more time I guess. I can't see it happening these days!
  20. Well I'm a bit further into harry potter and I've started to enjoy it. I'm getting used to the writing style as well. Sometimes its difficult going from one book to another when the styles are so radically different. I think I'll enjoy the book for what it is, a nice easy read and a good bit of imaginative escapism. My comments above seem a bit rash now. The penguin classic (to review) is going OK, but a lot slower than Harry Potter
  21. You have obviously never read cosmicomics by Italo Calvino. All the names look like a cat ran over the keyboard.
  22. Hi Adam. Nice to meet you. Make yourself right at home
  23. I started Harry Potter and the half blood prince the other day as a light accompaniment to my penguin classic. I tried her first book and gave up because I didn't think it was very well written. I thought I'd give one of her later ones a chance in case she's got any better; sadly I don't think that's the case . It'll probably be nice and light and easy to read and no doubt the story and ideas will be good, but I must say I struggle with JKR's writing. It grates, and I've just been extra spoiled by My Cousin Rachel. I will carry on with it, but I think the films are better frankly.
