  2. That's a really good trick to know. It would probably work for other animals as well. I just clicked on your Postpals Laura ....what a great and worthwhile site
  3. mouse poo and little bits of chewed up ......
  4. Wow Muggle, it's as big as a television!! We sang Starry, Starry Night for the first time at choir practice this week, accompanied by our guitars. We need lots more practice, but didn't sound too bad Good luck with the squirrels ...they'll probably develop a taste for it
  5. Hoping everything went well for you today Julie and you can now relax again and enjoy your food. I had to do a giggle when you said 'What a waste of rutabagas'. If they are like turnips, you've made a lucky escape. The only good thing you can use them for, as far as I'm concerned, is in vege soup.

  9. The lawsuit failed according to this ..... http://www.hitfix.com/articles/lawsuit-against-the-help-author-thrown-out-due-to-statute-of-limitations Like you say, if she'd been a little more imaginative in her name choice, she probably wouldn't have had any problems at all.

  13. U Can't Touch This ~ MC Hammer
  14. Exactly Kafka! And I think it's possible to teach tolerance without even touching on someone's religious views. Children (and adults) need to read books that challenge and question their preconceived ideas. It's then up to them to choose what they want to believe, but they must be given the opportunity in the first place. A few other books that haven't been mentioned are 'The Diary of Anne Frank', and for older children 'The Book Thief' and 'The Boy in Striped Pajamas', all dealing with WW2 and the treatment of Jews.
  15. lol Muggles, years since I've heard that one
  16. I'm glad the squirrels didn't eat your peppers!! Can we have your stuffed peppers recipe, please? I've never tried doing that.
  17. I think teaching tolerance and acceptance of all the different facets of humanity is vital, be it race, religion, sex, orientation, beauty, culture, whatever. Teaching children to accept people's differences and treat others as equals and with respect is totally different from telling children their religious beliefs are wrong.

    Eckhart Tolle

I've read most of The Power of Now. It seems to me to be based loosely on Buddhism. I like the idea of living in the moment, rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. I don't agree with all that he says, but he has some interesting ideas and good advice.
  19. I read Black Like Me at school and like you VF it had a very big impact on me. I can still remember the indignation I felt at the different way he was treated, purely due to his colour. Have just finished The Help and thought it was excellent too. This is a song from South Pacific You've Got To Be Carefully Taught You've got to be taught To hate and fear, You've got to be taught From year to year, It's got to be drummed In your dear little ear You've got to be carefully taught. You've got to be taught to be afraid Of people whose eyes are oddly made, And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade, You've got to be carefully taught. You've got to be taught before it's too late, Before you are six or seven or eight, To hate all the people your relatives hate, You've got to be carefully taught!
