  1. I find it very difficult to select a favorite actor as there are so many great ones, and for me, they certainly include Paul Newman. And, to top it off, there were few if any actors that gave more of himself to mankind. He was as unselfish a person as comes along. His contributions to children were to be envied.

Newman was great in many different movies. His portrayal in Minnessota Fats was great.

  2. I do love Louis Armstrong, and that song is amazing, but when you get him together with Ella Fitzgerald, magic happens. So, my choice for today, inspired by muggle not, is The Nearness of You by Ella & Louis

    Indeed Muggles, beautiful song :friends0:

Thank you chesilbeach and poppy

Yes, Armstrong and Fitzgerald were a classic. We will never hear a combo like that again.

One of the Louis Armstrong albums that I really like is the one by he and Velma Middleton............Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy.

btw, the Dave Matthews band were great admirers of Louis Armstrong. One of the members donated a set of CD's to the library in Charlottesville, Virginia.....LOL, I know because I checked them out and copied them. :)

  3. these will be the last bear photos that I post or I may get banned from the forum. :)

The first photo is of a bear that I named "Posing Bear"

The second photo is named "As Close As I Get". Most photos are taken from my porch which is elevated from the ground. This photo I went down into the yard and got pretty close to the bear. unfortunately the photo needs enlarging and I am still learning to use my new computer.

The last photo is of a momma bear and two bear cubs. They are probably no more than 7 days old when I took the photo. A couple weeks later the momma and cubs were at my bird feeder when something scared them . The one little cub ran to her momma right away. The other cub was a little further away from the momma and went lickety-split up a tree. I could hardly believe how fast it went up the tree.

Wish I had a better camera when I was taking these photos.

  4. Great photo Bree. Elephants love the water.

Here is a photo of a bear I named 'Looking Bear". As you can see the bear loves the sunflower seed in the bird feeder. one of the bears actually took the feeder off the post and went down into the woods with it. My granddaughter and I went all through the woods looking for the feeder and couldn't find it.

  5. Oh my, and I thought the cub was big!!! :icon_eek: Does your friend try and scare ones away that size by throwing skillets at them??? I wouldn't put it past them to throw it staight back!

My brother and family are in China and recently he went up into a mountainous area to help locals set up electric fence units to keep bears out of their houses. The government had ordered the killing of some little groundhog type animal because they thought it was destroying the farmer's pasture. But it happened to be the main food source of the bears and now they are venturing out further looking for food. One bear got into a medicine cupboard and took something that sent it berserk, It absolutely trashed the house and threw furniture out the window.

We want elephant photos Bree!!! :D

wow poppy, what an experience for your brother and family. tell him to send photos. :)

Agree with you, Bree,we would like some elephant photos.:) I lost all my elephant photos from my GD trip to Africa when I got my new computer and they somehow got lost in th transfer.

  6. This bear is practically hug-gable - Gosh! What a darling!

I've only ever seen bears at the zoo - and a few with street artists who train them to dance to the beat of a drum.

Where do you live muggle-not, (if you don't mind my asking) ?

The bear photos are from a few years back when I lived near Charlottesville, Virginia, U.S. I lived there for for about 13 or 14 years and loved it. I have since moved to North Carolina.

  7. the bear in the last photo was a cub in its first year. this photo is of a fully grown bear that I named 'trouble", for obvious reasons.

Moderator - should this photo be moved elsewhere so we don't mess up the What's Up In July thread?

  8. Last Christmas we received this email from our previous neighbor. I am sure she wouldn't mind my posting it:

    Hi Ed,

Ain’t no miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer!

About 4:20a this morning my wind chimes woke me up. I had no marine horn because I’d emptied it about a month ago when another bear cub had arrived in the wee hours. I finally used a couple of skillets and banged away. This morning I had to throw a skillet at this guy to make him budge. Pretty funny! His partner in crime (twin) went up a big oak nearby, but it was too far away to get a photo of him. Once they were off the deck I retrieved my feeders that somehow were still in tact. A few minutes later they were back and ripped up the cover on the grill before giving up and leaving since this crazy woman was beating on the deck with a skillet again.

Don’t you miss life in the country?

  9. Muggle, we are very amateur :blush2: We have a max of 20 singers. Two of us were playing guitars this week, but we may get a couple more.

You should repost your bear photos for everyone to see, they were amazing!!

Why don't you tape it and post it on u-tube :). Then we could all listen.

actually, I think you are modest. it will sound very nice, I am sure.

Naw, I think many on here have seen the bear photos and it would only be a repeat. I may post a photo of a young bear that my neighbor (from my old place of residence) sent me this past Christmas when a bear was on her deck outside the house. It made so much noise that she thought it was Santa and his reindeer coming.

  10. See, you've invented a whole new taste sensation!! Muggle Surprise. :D

I was reading in another thread how you were picking lots of veges from your garden. I was wondering if the climate is a lot different to where you were living before and if it affects what you can grow?

climate is about the same and t does not chnage what I grow. i put a solar powered electric fence around my current garden to keep the deer out and it works for deer. not so well for squirrels and rabbits. ;)

I made salsa yesterday.....chopped tomatoes, chopped onion, chopped peppers (both hot and sweet), a little vinegar, a little lemon, some cilantro, and salt. I eat it with tortilla chips.

  11. Wow Muggle, it's as big as a television!! We sang Starry, Starry Night for the first time at choir practice this week, accompanied by our guitars. We need lots more practice, but didn't sound too bad

Good luck with the squirrels ...they'll probably develop a taste for it :giggle2:

I would love to hear Starry, Starry Night sung by a Choir. Keep us informed on the progress of the Choir. How many play guitar in the Choir?

  12. We put chilli powder out when we have birds food and we didn't see a squirrel untill a couple of nights of heavy rain which we went straight out put chilli powder out and it did the trick. It doesn't affect the birds.

it does sound like a great idea. probably too late for my veggie garden but may help with flowers, especially the phlox. the deer eat all the buds off my phlox. We also have a very plump rabbit that has now eaten the tops off all my carrots. They are probably ok though as they had pretty much matured and I will dig/pull thm out.

At least we don't have any bear problems where we now live. poppy will remember the photos i took at our previous home where we had bear every day in our back yard eating sunflower seed. We would have as many as 7 different bear in a single day.

  13. Muggle not why dont you put chili powder out that keep the squirrels out

I was away to Lanzorate loved it fab hotel entainment was fab aswell want to go back

I never thought of chili powder. I wonder if that would help. of course it would take a lot of powder for my garden.

my new computer was delivered. a neighbor friend helped set it up for me. Now I have to learn how to use it.

poppy - if you read this. the monitor is 27" and is an all-in-one, no external processor. You should see the Starry, Starry, Night song/video on it .......awesome. :)

  14. Yuk, I just looked it up (Bar Harbor looks beautiful by the way, I've wanted to visit Maine ever since Hawkeye used to sing its praises in MASH!). It has actual pieces of lobster in it!!! I bet my other half would try it if we were there though... :)

For me it has to be pistachio ice cream if I can get it, Waitrose does a lovely one, after that it'd have to be a good quality mint choc chip..

We will be vacationing again this September in Bar Harbor. This is one of the restaurants where we wil have dinner 4 nights. The restaurant is the "rounded" part of the Inn..

    http://www.barharborinn.com/property.html

this is the inside of the dining room. We normally get a table at the window so we have a clear view of the harbor and boats. if interested, access the menu and browse. It is our favorite restaurant in Bar Harbor.
