  1. I'm loving your sense of humour already. Welcome aboard. A book on Jazz seems good to me. I keep meaning to put that new Jazz channel on...sister to Classic FM as I used to love jazz and big band. Must get organised!

Anyway...enjoy the forum. Good to have you here!

  2. Well it's is some months since I touched this thread, and that is putting it politely. I eventually managed 54 books by the end of the year, so I did reach my target of 50! This year I am aiming for 75...;)

So far I've read the following, and I am a little behind schedule. I have written reviews of some, and they are marked by the red *

    1) Just So Stories - Rudyard Kipling

    2) Stamp Album - Terrence Stamp

    3) The Real Life of Sebastien Knight - V.Nabokov *

    4) Body Double - Tess Gerritsen

    5) The Veiled One - Ruth Rendell

    6) Blue Dahlia - Nora Roberts

    7) The Fiction Class - Susan Breen *

    8) Black Rose - Nora Roberts

    9) Red Lily - Nora Roberts

    10) Betjemin - A.N.Wilson *

    11) C'est La Folie - Michael Wright *

    12) Letter from America - Alistair Cooke

    13) Ten Women who Shook the World - Sylvia Brownrigg.

Since this is week 12, I need to be a little further ahead, so I'd better look out some short books!

It's no great thing simply to brag about reading when all you read is tripe, is it? YouTube's more stimulating than a lot of literature. Perhaps the idea that to read is inherently better than not doing so is a hangover from ye olde days when reading meant the improvement of one's education and spiritual nourishment...except for the poor proles who had their Penny Dreadfuls. With the popularity of Kate Price and JKR I think the state of the nation's cultural health is in excellent condition...;)

    Very funny! :D

I think it is important to read for relaxation as well, so sometimes the quality doesn't matter, plus, it's better that people read something, rather than nothing (unless it's propaganda).

I was so insensed when I read the bog, even though I suspected Andrij99 was pulling out legs, or writing tongue in cheek, that I left a comment, which may or maynot get published. But one thing is for certain, you raised a storm and debating is always good.

Oh, and bad publicity is better than no publicity, so thanks :D

  4. There is no way I could choose just one, and it would take me all night to compile a list, but two of my long time favourites are Cold Comfort Farm - Stella Gibbons - and A traveller in Time - Alison Utterly, both of which have stood the test of time.

  5. Hello, and welcome to our little corner.

Classical as in Plato or the greek tragedies ? Or Jane Austen? Literary like Chaucer...Milton?

Hope you enjoy. We are a very friendly bunch ;)

  6. Yeah...me too! But we appreciate older men...actually I always did prefer older as in a decade or two older than me. Never been one for younger males.

    He still looks fab! Official!

Ahh! janet. You star! I will read about it properly later as we're off out soon. That's it...The River.

    Thanks Janet (hugs)

  7. I can't say I've watched much Delia , as I can't stand her (sorry delia), but I always cooked everything fresh, like Angel. If you plan things out, and a lot comes with habit too, a meal can be cooked very quickly. Like you Angel, I had a husband on shiftwork, and four children. I often felt that I ran a cafe and a taxi service , but the kids always had fresh cooked meals, (only the occasional convenience food) and I baked every day too. No wonder I'm so knackered now!

But I do like Aunt Bessies Roasties...as a fall back to my own:)

  8. Does anyone remember him in a drama series based on or around a canal? I think he lived on a barge or house boat or something. I liked it at the time, but the critics downed it and so I think they only did the one series.

    Welcome and enjoy :)

  10. Hi Aaron. Glad you could join us. I hope you are enjoying Dorian Gray. I read it last year too and had mixed feelings about it, but felt it was a good book and not to be missed.

The forum is very friendly, so get stuck in
