I haven't started Emma yet, but remember loving it when I first read it , in my teens. I understand what you mean Kell, but life has changed soooo....much in the last 100 years that there's no comparison. That was the life of well-to-do ladies (no wonder Jane Austen turned to writing). I think it must be hard for any young person to relate to that age...just the slowness. I grew up in the fifties and sixties and compared with 2006, THAT was incredibly slow. But at least you've tried it and are able to form an opinion.

Yep. I can relate to that. Its a problem, cos you don't want to be disrespectful to people by getting their name wrong, or look totally stupid yourself! I'm afraid I end up calling people a similar name, usually made up from the letters in the original.

I have a feeling it was on Richard and Judy, and might even have been Kate Mosse herself, as they had her on. Anyway, someone pronounced it Alace sounding the 's'.

I often have a problem knowing how to pronounce the names of some of the characters. Recently , when reading Labyrinth, Kate Mosse, one of the main characters was called Alais. Having a french name ending in ais myself, I pronounced it Alay but then heard others pronounce it differently. Its ok when you read by yourself, but when discussing in public, its difficult, because you don't want to get someones name wrong. Anybody else have similar problems?

Thanks Bagpuss. I'll check Amazon out again. Last time I looked both Abebooks and Amazon only had expensive ones...no second hand. But of course it can change from day to day.

As a child I had borrowed the book from the library, so it shows what an impact it made on me. I hope I am not going to be disappointed when I read it again!

My favourite children's book was A traveller in Time by Alison Uttley. Its a story of a girl who stays with relatives and discovers she can travel through time, by slipping through a door or something in the house and meets up with a family, the Babingtons who previously lived in the house, in the reign of Elizabeth 1. I think her name was Penelope and she gets involved in the plots for/against the queen...hazy about the details.

I have been looking for a copy of this, but keep missing it on Ebay. Ottacars told me that its now out of print as are many of AU's books with no plans to reprint. Amazon have copies but I am not willing to pay

[Shakespeare]

I loved The Tempest and the Taming of the shrew, but I will have to start reading Shakespeare again. Did quite a bit at school, Othello and Hamlet, and A midsummer Nights Dream. All of them favourites ever since.

[Audiobooks?]

Its a long time since I listened to an audio book, but I've been meaning to do it again as I love being read to. Of course it depends on who the reader is. As someone else said, the reader has to be on the same wavelength for maximum enjoyment. I also agree that listening to something is a good way of introducing you to new stuff. I am much more likely to persevere with a radio 4 book reading for instance, than a book that looks a bit iffy when I pick it up off the shop shelf, or start to read and get bored.
