  1. Don't you think she was like it because of the time she lived? I don't mean the war - I mean the 1930s.

I think I'm in a minority here but I like your profile layout - very striking! :)

  4. Temperance "Tempe" Brennan?
  5. How odd - I wonder why? I can't actually remember what the cover looks like now, even though I only looked at it yesterday*! ETA: *Thursday
  6. They currently have 10 Hercule Poirot books for
  7. Of course it should! How remiss of them!
  8. Didn't someone say you could upload your own?
  9. Yay! I was vaguely familiar with it before the course - and like you said, it's definitely one that stays with you.
  10. Thanks for the recommendations - I will look out for them on my travels.

    Allergies?

I think it comes from being hot as well as actually being exposed to a heat source though. My daughter used to get it a lot, but it was more of a red rash. I should get her checked out by the doctor if it's not gone by Monday, just in case, unless she starts to get unwell over the weekend in which case you should pop her along to a medical centre/hospital. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about though.
  12. I've been told (I don't know how true this is) that she's one of Jeremy Paxman's favourite authors too! Which would you recommend I look out for then?
  13. I enjoyed most of it actually - even the really bleak stuff - but Owen is definitely my favourite, with Sassoon a close second. Popular choices both - and with good reason!
  14. *Brushes away cobwebs and blows off dust!* I read Casino Royale by Ian Fleming in April 4½/10 and Breathing Lessons by Anne Tyler in May 6½/10 Apart from that, I've been reading John Clare's poetry (beautiful, close observations of the English countryside - the seventh Romantic poet - eg the unknown one!), Will Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale (10/10) and masses of WW1 poetry (Dulce Et Decorum Est is probably my favourite poem) and prose, including the excellent Out of the Dark anthology. Now my A Level is out of the way, I don't know what to read. I wanted something 'fluffy' so started Getting Rid of Matthew by Jane Fallon, but I only got about 20 pages in and I'm finding it rather boring - and the protagonist a bit irritating, so I think I might try Cider with Rosie by Laurie Lee instead.
  15. AQA - syllabus A For AS last year we did... Poetry: The World's Wife by Carol Ann Duffy Prose: Wild Children by Angela Carter Play: A Woman of no Importance by Oscar Wilde Play: Richard III - Shakespeare and this year we did... I hope your sister's exam goes well. Is she off to university too?
  16. I think you're the first person I've come across who didn't enjoy it.

    Hello

Hello Tbain and welcome to the forum.
  20. Hello Amanda, and welcome to the forum.
  21. I think the best two got through to the final. I'd have liked Claire to win, but I guess Lee is second best out of the four left. Is Alex only 24?
  22. Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to reading for pleasure again. I've only read one book since April! I'm going to start with something fluffy that requires no thought - or analysis! Judy - good luck with the French - I'm sure you'll have fun.
  23. I don't know how I managed to miss this - but better late than never, I guess! I've nearly finished A2 English Lit (second year of A Level) - in fact, my last exam is tomorrow. I don't think I'm going to get a good grade this time (got a B for AS Level last year) as Friday's exam was awful (D at best, at a guest) and tomorrow's exam in my weaker area. I really do them for fun, and have had a blast at the evening classes, which was what it was all about for me. What next? Well, I've pretty much run out of choices for GCSE/A level so I'm probably going to do my European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL). Apologies for the delay in replying!
