  1. I read somewhere that you should never go over 8 people for a bookgroup or you tend to split into two groups. We have 7 active members in ours, and one who dips in and out! We meet every 4-6 weeks, depending on availability. When we first started, the lady whose idea it was picked the first book and we then met at her house to discuss it - she did nibbles. The person who was picking the second book gave us details of it at the end of our first meeting and we then met at her house to discuss it, where the next person on the list gave out their choice at the end of that evening and so on... Some of us just pick one book - others bring two choices and then we vote. Ours is very informal, but I love it!

Happy birthday Mia - hope you're having a good day. :)

  3. Happy birthday, Tiger. Hope you're having a great day. :)

  4. Great review, Sarah. It sounds good. According to Amazon, it's out in the UK in July - but it doesn't say exactly when.

    Hello and welcome.
  6. Haven't seen you around for a while - I hope you're okay. :)

  7. I know a few people who went to Glastonbury so I'm looking forward to finding out what they thought of it. My friend Kath went for the day yesterday with her children (via the 'local resisdents' scheme) - it's about her 7th Glastonbury Sunday! We watched Amy Wino. It was like watching a car crash in slow motion! We also saw The Verve who were good. We though Lily Allen's singing was awful.
  8. I would never do that! I read a few pages last night. It's an easy reading style, although I realise that the subject matter when it gets going will not be easy! I've closed the poll now - I will let you all know how I get on. Thanks again.
  9. She is, thanks! She's loved her time at primary school, but despite being one of the younger ones, I think they come to a point where they've 'outgrown' primary school. It's 'shuffle-up' day on Thursday so she'll get to try it out to see what it's like.
  10. My daughter is in year 6 and Michael Morpurgo is very popular with her and her classmates. Even my non-reading son read a few of his. They both liked Kensuke's Kingdom.
  11. Thanks for the opinions. I will give it a few chapters and see how I get on. The print is quite small which is also putting me off a bit!
  12. I'm after some opinions! About two years ago, my friend's Mum leant me a copy of Schindler's Arc by Thomas Keneally. She said she "knew I loved books and thought I'd enjoy it" - but I really don't fancy it. The problem is, I don't want to offend her by returning it unread, especially as I've had it so long. I tried returning it about a year ago, saying that I didn't know whether I'd have time to read it, but she refused, saying she was in no hurry to have it back! I just wondered whether anyone here has read it, and if so, do you think I should give it a go? I've go so many other books on my 'to read' pile that I really don't know what to do! Thanks.
  13. I'm another who's gone off Jane Green since finding BCF. I've decided I will try it, just because I've read her others, but I will wait until I find it in a charity shop!
  14. According to threads on Digital Spy...
  15. Have you read the sequels? They're a bit samey but still a nice, light, good fun read!

Hmm - it's no longer your birthday but I hope you had a good one anyway! :D

  17. Finished The Ingenious Edgar Jones by Elizabeth Garner - 9/10 This book is quite different and a real page-turner!

    Hi guys!

Hello and welcome to the forum.
  19. Hello and welcome to the forum.
  20. In The Ingenious Edgar Jones by Elizabeth Garner, Edgar's mother is called Eleanor Jones, apart from on two occasions... On page 43 "He would sit by the door, howling fit to shake the walls until Emily put him out to play." And on page 151. "Emily frowned, catching the run of the silver as it slid down the incline."
  21. I loved this! It was certainly unusual and as you said, Michelle, I imagine it's the sort of book that stays with you long after you've finished it. I believe that Elizabeth Garner originally intended Eleanor Jones to be called Emily Jones though... In my copy, on page 43 "Once Edgar had been given the run of the wilderness, it was impossible to keep him from it. He would sit by the door, howling fit to shake the walls until Emily put him out to play." I was rather confused for a second and wondered who the heck Emily was! She crops up again... The other is on page 151. "Emily frowned, catching the run of the silver as it slid down the incline." I expect they've been told by now, but I've emailed Headline just in case! ETA: The email bounced and their website is 'under construction'! Ah well, I tried to tell them!
  22. This is the only one on your list that I've read (so far, but who knows!) - it's great.
  23. Thanks Louise.
