  1. Finished a 1930s non-fiction book today... 1933 - Non-fiction - Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell - 7/10.
  2. I haven't seen this for years either! My Mum always had a thing for Peter Egan! My hubby and I are like the lead character (Richard Briers' one - I can't remember what he was called) used to be with the telephone, but with teaspoons. Hubby is left-handed so if he empties the dishwasher, he puts them in the drawer the wrong way round and I have to turn them the correct way as it drives me mad!
  3. Just letting you know that I've moved your post about 'A Bad Hare Day' to the Author Promotions forum.

  4. The actor who played Joe Mangel was sacked for allegedly using drink/drugs on set - however, he successfully sued to unfair dismissal from the show.
  5. I have. I read it in 1981 and again a couple of years ago - my review here. I see I only gave it 6/10, but actually I think that after digesting it and thinking about it properly, I'd probably raise that figure now.
  6. The trouble is with the scripting. It's not as easy as a character just going away (unless it's a planned absence) because the scripts are worked months in advance. When Will left Neighbours a couple of years ago, they just gave all his lines to Oliver. The same when the actor who played Joe Mangle was suspended - Valda took over his lines. In the case of Libby, this just wasn't possible so the temporary cover was deemed necessary. Otherwise all the scripts would have had to be rewritten at ridiculously short-notice - and that would have bought a different type of complaint.
  7. Has anyone here ever read any Henry Miller? Someone on another forum told me that I'd possibly like him as I'm really enjoying Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London, but [someone on] Wikipedia's opinion that "He was known for breaking with existing literary forms and developing a new sort of 'novel' that is a mixture of novel, autobiography, social criticism, philosophical reflection, surrealist free association, and mysticism, one that is distinctly always about and expressive of the real-life Henry Miller and yet is also fictional" makes me unsure (specifically the philosophical reflection, surrealist free association, and mysticism bit!). I just wondered if anyone has any opinions on which of his books (if any!) I should look out for? Thanks in advance.
  8. Aww I'm only teasing with my signature - no need to hide!
  9. 21 is such an impressive total for less than 2 months.
  10. Yes, yes and yes! I always finish my LJ reviews with "the book is x pages long... etc". I never cut off the pages at the beginning but I only ever count up to the page number the story finishes on - and my page numbers never tally with Amazon!
  11. If you're on Broadband, it's available on BBC iPlayer. I plan to watch it later when my hubby finishes working (he works from home and we share an office).
  12. Years ago, Phoebe Bright had a baby at 17. Her boyfriend was killed on the day she went for her abortion so she didn't go through with it. That was in about 1991 I believe.
  13. Kym had pneumonia. The decision to replace her, temporarily, with Michala Banas was because Libby is going to be in some quite important storylines, so rather than write her out with an implausible reason, they drafted in the replacement. Michala will be in Neighbours for approximately 4 weeks. She finishes in the 2008 Australia season finale (shown in Australia just before Christmas) and Kym returns in the 2009 season opener. Here in the UK, we're unlikely to get the 4 week break so we'll get the finale one day and the opener the next (possibly with a weekend separating them if the finale episode happens to fall on a Friday). Many Australian fans on the Neighbours forum really warmed to Michala (who has Libby's mannerisms down to a T) and soon accepted the temporary change. In Australia, Kym's illness was well publicised - it's a shame the voiceover (by Jackie Woodbourne - who plays Susan Kennedy) didn't say "Due to illness... before saying ...in today's episode, the role of Libby Kennedy is played by Michala Banas, which might have made things clearer for the UK viewers. As for Libby and Dan's scenes, the actor who plays Dan (I've temporarily forgotten the actor's name!) and Michala had lead roles in another Aus soap called McLeod's Daughters, where they played a couple (who like Libby and Dan had a will-they-won't-they storyline for some time), so they actors actually do have on-screen chemistry.
  14. The rue du Coq d'Or, Paris, seven in the morning. Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell
  15. Angel - that's exactly how I felt. Kylie - glad I haven't put you off. "One man's meat..." and all that. I'd still like to try The Book of Evidence as a comparison.
  16. I couldn't resist - the book/film is everywhere!
  17. Started Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell this morning - (I had a half-term lie-in! ). I'm only on page 28/189 but it's great so far. I love Orwell's easy writing/reading style of his non-fiction books.
  18. Just popped by to say 'hi' and that I hope you're okay. :)

  19. ..
  20. Finished The Sea by John Banville (3rd attempt) - it was a huge disappointment to me. 3/10
  21. The Sea by John Banville The
  22. I'd like the read The Princess Bride. The film is awesome but I don't know how true it is to the book.
  23. I've got a small cross-stitch kit of a dog 'hidden' in my desk drawer that I was going to do for my daughter about 3 Christmasses ago! You've just reminded me! Love the bookmark, Kell. Can't wait to see the finished article.
  24. Okay, based on some of the more recent posts in here... 1. I hate feather pillows - they're too hard! It's like sleeping on a bag of cement! 2. I had a long-distance (not as far as some, but abut 180 miles) relationship for two years. 3. My long-term relationship and I have been married for nearly 21 years. 4. I *adore* stationery shops too - could, and sometimes do, spend hours in them. I have lots of untouched notebooks and some, like Chimera, that I've abandoned once I've written in them (even though I don't mind my handwriting). 5. I love the smell of Waterstone's! Mmmm!
  25. I try to use correct SPAG - and Firefox is great for that as it has a spelling extension! I think it's important on forums because on many (and it's true of here) there are many posters for whom English isn't their first language, so it makes life that little bit easier for them. I do get annoyed (especially on here) when people don't use capitals for names - book titles and authors for example, and it really irritates me when people use 'i' instead of I! It's just basic common sense that names require capitals! I don't claim to be perfect though - I'm sure I make my fair share of mistakes! Oh, and whoever said that their partner checks MSN before posting - I do that - and with my texts!
