  1. Thanks guys. Although I'm finding it hard to fit in reading time at the moment. I've been reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall since 18 January and I'm still only 60% of the way through it.
  2. I hope Steve won't object to me posting his PM to me in here, but I mentioned my apprehension when it comes to sci-fi but said I'd be open to suggestions and he kindly sent me the following recommendations... I have never seen the film I Am Legend [which sounds like a good thing!] but it doesn't seem to be available from the library here, but Reply is, so I'll probably go for that, at some stage. Watch this space...
  3. I did read, and love, WotW, you're right. It was brilliant. However it's the thought of reading things set on other planets/galaxies with different time frames that just don't appeal to me. I've read a few books that might be considered fantasy (Stardust?) and enjoyed them, but I always think of William Shatner when I think of sci-fi! I don't think I'm ready for a challenge, but maybe just one, short, book...?!
  4. I do, but it seems you read lots of sci-fi and I... don't, or you read things like The Iliad, which I'm not sure I'd cope with, so I never know what to say!
  5. I have loads of books on my Kindle that I'll probably never get round to reading - but I don't think of them as 'to read' books so I don't stress about them at all!
  6. Oh my - that is a lovely looking modern library! Wow!
  7. Those The Incorrigible Children covers are GORGEOUS! As is the Christmas at Cold Comfort Farm cover!
  8. I read Gulliver's Travels last year (before Mistress Masham's Repose, which was my RC book last Feb). Basically it's in four parts - the first two were really good, but I felt it went downhill rather a lot in parts 3 and 4 and overall it was rather dry so I definitely wouldn't recommend it as a 'first read' from that list. It did have quite a lot of 'toilet humour' in it, which amused me because it was first published in 1726 - I bet it raised a few eyebrows!
  9. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Have you read The Novel in the Viola? That's a great read by her too.
  10. Oh dear! Bless you for not wanting to give a 1/5!
  11. Awwww, I'm so glad you enjoyed it. That picture of your cats is gorgeous. You should DEFINITELY get a penguin!
  12. I've managed to change the first one into a photo, but I can't do the second for some reason. Above the picture it says 'share' and if you click on that it should give you an image link - as I said, for some reason the link isn't working for the second picture. Thanks for sharing - I love the physic garden.
  13. Thanks - it worked so I was able to see your lovely pictures. I use prettyful a lot! Have you read Call of the Wild by Jack London too? I love your review of The Upstairs Room by Johanna Reiss.
  14. For some reason it's asking me for a password - I want to see the prettyful wolves!
  15. Next time we get some I'll try to push it in your direction!
  16. Hmm - maybe it was just the Charlie sequel he didn't allow. I can't remember where I read it now.
  17. It must be heartbreaking to see a bad adaptation. That's why Dahl wouldn't allow any of his other books to be made into films during his lifetime - he hated the dreadful Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory so much!
  18. It's really gorgeous, Bree. Last ones from me (well, last one that I've taken myself, anyway!) is Cardiff library. Obviously the signs are bilingual And it has lovely views of the city - here you can just about see the Millennium stadium...
  19. Lovely, isn't it. Sorry Devi. I know Melbourne is in Victoria - for some reason I just thought you said it was a library in Sydney when you posted in frankie's thread and I didn't go back to check and didn't see your post in here.
  20. Awww, that's nice.
  21. Thanks all. It was Devi who inspired the idea though with her beautiful pictures of Sydney library which is stunning. It's a shame you guys couldn't prevent your library from closing. I must say I quite like your new one though. Some wonderful libraries. Kell - I love the statues in the pavements - awesome. Marcia - I like your top library. This is Bristol's main library - the Bristol Central Library. I think this library is lovely. And this is the entrance lobby.
  22. It doesn't matter - I'm really enjoying it.
  23. Thanks guys. It could be Narnia. Maybe I'd better go back and look for a wardrobe!
  24. My Dickens collection arrived today. They are lovely! I can't believe they were only £19.99. Nothing to do with books, but Peter and I have had a lovely day out today. All the snow has gone from the roads, but it still looks absolutely gorgeous in the countryside. How beautiful is this...?!
  25. I'm glad you're enjoying it. I'm still reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I'm really enjoying it but I just don't seem to have any time to read at the moment.
