  1. The Secret History has to be one of my favourite books which I have read over the past two years. I loved the characters - a group of students who all seemed to have shadowy pasts and acted mysteriously all the way through the book. I really enjoyed the the story being set in and around a college/university with students and teachers making up the list of characters. I found the story to be completely absorbing and I ended up wanting to constantly know what would happen on the next page. A brilliant book. :jump::lol:

  2. Due to being on half-term this week, I have managed to increase the number of pages read in a day - for the past few days I have been reading between 100 - 150 pages a day. :jump: I am trying to make the most of it as I know I probably won't be able to read more than 40 pages a day when I'm back at college.

  3. I love watching this programme. I watched the previous series and the special Hay-on-Wye series earlier this year as well. It's a shame that it is the only book programme on at the moment, but at least this series has extended the programme - it was only a half-hour show before.

I find though that sometimes Mariella seems to talk more than the author she is interviewing. The bit where the authors chose a favourite book of theirs is fun - it's interesting to see what types of books they enjoy reading.

  4. I found Mrs Dalloway slightly difficult to follow at times. The swapping back and forth between the present and the past was a great way to build up the characters and their history, but at certain points in the book I did get a little lost and had to re-read a page to follow where Woolf was going. I'm glad I stuck with it and read it, and it has not put me off reading another book by Woolf in the future.

  5. A large percentage of my books have been bought second-hand. I like being able to buy copies of books which have the original cover, so second-hand shops are great places to look for them. I agree with others, though, that I tend to only buy them if they are in reasonable condition.

  6. Reading Galactic Space Hamster's recent thread reminded me of another morbid question which myself and friends were thinking about recently.

If you knew you were going to die and you could only read one more book before you kicked the bucket, which one would it be?

Would you re-read an old favourite?

Would you read that book which you've been meaning to read all your life but never got around to it?

What would be your last read and why?

    Over to you......

  7. Virginia Woolf is another author I have yet to explore. I have heard that readers have problems with her streams of consciousness. Does that bother you Liz? How do you find Woolf?

Well, I've only read a third of Mrs Dalloway so far. It hasn't been too bad, but there have been times where I became completely lost and couldn't for the life of me follow what she was saying and going on about. It seems to come in batches - it's good for so long and then you get stuck for a few pages. I am going to keep going with it, though. It's a good book when you can understand what's going on.

  8. I'm the same as some of you guys - I don't think I would worry about my mountain of 'to be read' books. I would probably make sure that all of my books would be going to a safe home. When my grandfather died, all of his leatherbound classics which he had collected and treasured all of his life were just thrown away because no-one wanted them - this was when I was very little, otherwise I would have made sure they were well looked after by someone.

This topic reminds me of a question my sister and I were thinking about - if you knew you were going to die and you could only read one more book before you kicked the bucket, which one would it be?

We are all a bit of a morbid bunch, eh?

  9. This was a slightly, shall we say, unusual story. Very unpredictable with some funny and wonderfully witty pieces throughout. A very strange and surreal book, but very much a 'page turner'.

I have read one or two of her short stories, but this is the first novel of her's which I have read.

  10. I do tend to judge a book by its cover when I am just browsing in a bookshop, especially large shops such as Waterstones. There are so many books that I usually just pick up the books with covers or titles that look or sound interesting and a bit different from most books. A bad cover would not put me off buying a book if it seemed to be a good read - but I will always look around just to see if there is a different and better cover, though.

  11. At the moment I have been able to read 20 - 40 pages whilst at college. Where more or less all of the students spend their free time in the cafeteria, I tend to spend it in either the library or a quiet part of the college reading my book and doing homework. There can be anything up to 500 students in the cafeteria at one time, and as I hate being surrounded by crowds of shouting students, I definitely prefer staying in the quiet.
