  1. I read this a while ago (I think it was last year) and loved it, but was really annoyed by the ammount of spelling mistakes in my copy! I managed to ignore them most of the time and get on with the story as the writing was great, but it really irked me that the proofreaders doidn't pick up on all those errors (I remember counting to about 25 and then not bothering to count them any more as I was only about half way through!).
  2. I would LOVE to see a really good sequel that follows the characters after te events of Harvey. Similarly, I think it would have been a lot of fun to follow the further adventures of Walter and Hildy in His Girl Friday. (Are you sensing a threme here yet? I LOVE old screwball comedies - actually, I think loads of them would have been ripe for sequels!) I also think it would have been very interesting to see Vertigo from Madeleine/Judy's point of view. Of course, I would have wanted all these to have the original cast members in them too, so there's no way any of them would live up to my expectations if they were made today.
  3. Ooh, that sounds a bit different! I'll look forward ot hearing what you thought of it when you're finished!
  4. My favourite book series are: Terry Pratchett - Discworld Kelley Armstrong - Women of the Otherworld Simon Scarrow - Romans/Cato Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell - The Edge Chronicles Stuart Macbride - Logan McRae
  5. Can we now leave the thread to discuss the book rather than the person who was banned, please? Otherwise the thread will be removed. Thank you.
  6. Don't be silly - no need to apologise! It's not like I'm short of reading material anyway - LOL! THe anticipation is half the fun. ;) Try and have a stress-free week and just send the book when you have time to send it - no need to rush. :)

    Happy birthday, Beef! :)

    Happy Silver Wedding Anniversary! :)

  9. Also, given that you have fewer than 10 posts, you won't have access to the PM system.
  10. Well, Xander's favourite is Goodnight Moon, so I'll go off and vote for that one.
  11. I, Lucifer by Glen Duncan: The end is nigh, and the Prince of Darkness has been given one last shot at redemption, if he can manage to live out a reasonably blameless life on earth. The Old Dealmaker negotiates a trial run - a month with all the delights of the flesh. (The flesh: slightly worn, one previous owner; a writer). But the experience of walking amongst us has more pratfalls and detours than Luce foresaw; instead of teaching us what it's like to be him, Lucifer finds himself beginning to understand what it's like to be human...
  12. Totally sick - who would do such a thing? I mean, I know they didn't actually put their child in danger, but to actually plan and carry out such a horrible trick is beyond belief!
  13. Well, at least my melting moments turned out quite well. They're rather nice, if a tad cakey. I'm going to have to ask my Mam for her old recipe for them as I have very fond memories of her melting moments as a kid. In the meantime, though, this recipe will do. I got it from CBeebies I Can Cook of all places! Ingredients (makes 6): 50g caster sugar 100g soft butter 1 egg (you'll only use half) 1tsp vanilla extract 125g SR flour 70g oats Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 180C 2. Cream the butter and sugar till fluffy 3. In a separate cup, whisk the egg with a fork and add half to the butter and sugar, then beat it all together with a wooden spoon 4. Add the tsp of vanilla extract and the flour and combine till all the flour is incorporated into the sticky mixture 5. Divide the dough into 6 and roll into balls 6. Put the oats on a plate and roll the balls in them til they're coated 7. Put them on a lightly greased baking tray and press down lightly 8. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until cooked This recipe only makes half a dozen, but you could easily double all the ingredients and use the whole egg (the recipe only calls for half the egg). I had to leave mine in the oven for 20 minutes till they were cooked, but they came out lovely. I'd like to make more (to my Mam's recipe instead) but try coating them in dessicated coconut or flaked almonds (if using almonds, I'd use almond extract instead of vanilla for more impact), as I think they'd also work well. Overall, I'd give this recipe 3/5 - it's simple, easy and quite tasty, but they taste/feel a bit more cakey than biscuity. Still very yummy though!
  14. I weigh most of them, but you can get conversions online.

    Book Prices

I've had to resort to getting almost all my books 2nd hand now whereas before it was about 40-50% and the rest were brand new). THe only new books I get nowadays are from supermarkets and discount book shops as they only cost a few quid, unless I get vouchers/gift cards for some place like Waterstones. I used to love browsing through Waterstones (or Ottakers as it was - I prefered it back then!) but now it's pretty much torture because the books are so much more expensive these days. I'm also finding a lot of the paperbacks are in the larger format, which is almost the same size as the hardbacks, and Im' wondering if the publishers are using that as an excuse to charge more too.
  16. Yes please! Do post it here in the thread so everyone can give it a try if they've a mind to! I'll certainly be trying this one next time I have over ripe bananas! My peanutbutter cookies taste nice enough, if very sweet, l but they are all falling apart. Of the 8 I made, I have only salvaged 5 - and one of them has one side falling off it already! I'll not be bothering with those again. The melting moments are baking right now.
  17. I'm gong to try baking some cookies today - two different types. I've found simple recipes for flourless peanutbutter cookies and melting moments, so I thought I'd give them both a bash. I'll let you know how they turn out and give the recipes if they're good!
  18. I'm dying to read it, but I wouldn't want to ruin for someone else what I know is going to be a gift to me, so I'll just have to be patient!
  19. Kell

Thanks for that, but I'll wait till Xmas - I wouldn't want to spoil a gift that I know someone will be getting for me. ;)

  20. I don't have this one yet, but it's right at the top of my Xmas list, so I'm holding out till then *biting my nails off in anticipation!*
  21. I think his explanation of making their last weeks more bearable is as convincing an explanation as any really. Although Hanna always seems distant, this could just as easily be a defense mechanism
  22. Time for another question from the back of the book: Michael suggests reasons why Hanna became a guard and for her selection of girls to read to her. How convincing are his arguments? How can we explain why ordinary people commit atrocities without resorting to calling the monsters?
  23. Happy birthday!

  24. Sounds delicious, BookJumper! I made a huge load of chilli in the slow cooker (it's been simmering all afternoon!) - am just about to go and sample it - yummy! :eek2:
