  1. Ok.. I promised Bethany that I would read whichever book she was given to study for her English GCSE, and it's Pride and Prejudice. I avoid classics, and so I wouldn't normally pick it up, but now it looks like I have to! I have a question - if I buy her a DVD to help, would you suggest the BBC mini-series, or the Keira Knightly film?
  2. Unfortunately I have read in many articles that Christopher was not interested in coming back at all.
  3. I think the 2013 short list has just been published, so I'll try to post that one, as well as finding out who won 2012.
  4. That prequel put a smile on my face for the rest of the day!
  5. Ooh, I have this on my kindle,
  6. I think it's becoming a little more popular with publishers - it's good for YA, but I've just requested a new thriller from DoubleDay.
  7. I've been there for ages, but haven't used it that much yet. The publisher of your requested book will take a look at your request and either approve or decline. Some are quick, some take a while.
  8. Well, it was some time ago, so I can't remember details, but I read the whole series one after the other. If I recall, it was pretty much my first SF, so I wasn't aware of differences, I just enjoyed the stories.
  9. I don't read a lot of SF, but I loved Rendezvous With Rama - are you planning on reading the rest of the series?
  10. We&'very done book awards before, and it's not easy to organise. The biggest problem is the amount of nominations, as people read so many different books. If a small group of you want to try to organise something, please go ahead, but I suggest you limit it to a small group.
  11. Please click on the banner at the top of the forum to get there, thank you. Happy spending!
  12. These books have been discussed more in individual reading lists/blogs. From Wiki: Demon Cycle Novel Quintet: The Painted Man (2008) (US title The Warded Man; 2009)(FR title L'Homme-Rune; 2009) The Desert Spear (March 27, 2010, Del Rey)(FR title La Lance du désert; 2010) The Daylight War (February 12, 2013)[7] The Skull Throne (Forthcoming, working title subject to change) The Core (Forthcoming, working title subject to change)
  13. Insurgent improved for me on a second listen. Allegiant has disappointed me.
  14. And the winner is.... BSchultz19 Congrats - I'll drop you a PM to make some arrangements.
  15. Last call, any more entries?
  16. A huge thank you to everyone who joined in - it's been a little quieter than I wished, but I hope both readers and authors got something out of it.
  17. I have to disagree with that one, I have loved Divergent, and even enjoyed a re-read, which is unusual for me. I wasn't keen on the end of the series, but I'd still recommend Divergent.
  18. Do NOT read these spoilers if you're yet to read Allegiant - but I think it's important that those who have can discuss how they feel. I've already spoken to chaliepud about this, as we seem to be the two main readers on here, and these are my thoughts: In the following, Veronica Roth talks about the ending, and I have a lot of respect for how she feels: http://veronicarothbooks.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/about-end-of-allegiant-spoilers.html
  19. Just finished Allegiant, and still trying to work out how I feel.
  20. There's apparently 90 trees down around Kent, but I think our local area is ok. I think travel is the most affected, I'm glad I'm home this morning.
  21. Devon, Cornwall and the South Coast does look as if it may be the worse.
  22. I'm not sure where everyone lives, and therefore what your risk is - what's the forecast for your area, and have you all gotten all the loose things from your garden? We're in the South East, close to London, and it shouldn't be too bad here - the forecast shows 30mph at it's height, with gusts of 56mph. Thankfully it's half term, and unusually both Glen and I are off tomorrow, so if there are any roads blocked, it won't affect us getting to work. I do have a hospital appointment in the afternoon, so I hope all is ok by then. Stay safe everyone, and keep us updated.
  23. I'm surprised we don't have an existing thread about these books! I came across Divergent when browsing Audible - I hadn't heard about it, but it sounded interesting. I've since become caught up in the whole trilogy, and am looking forward to the film. The 3rd book, Allegiant, has just been published, and I can already see a mix of ratings on amazon. I guess that's to be expected with a loved series, some are always going to be disappointed if the end doesn't match what they expect, whilst others will love it whatever happens. Please use this thread to discuss all three books, but please use spoiler tags for the important bits.
  24. I've just finished a YA book called Vivian Versus the Apocalypse. It was one of those which I ordered, then decided I wasn't sure about it. I picked it up, and ended up really liking it. America is in the grips of The Church of America, a sinister cult which has predicted The Rapture. When people actually do disappear, including Vivian's parent's, she sets off to try to find some answers. There is a romance, but it's a gentle one, which is just a small part of the story, and Vivian's friendship with Harp is shown as more important - which was refreshing in YA. Audio is Allegiant - I am really loving being back in the Divergent world, but there's a lot to take in, and at the midway mark I'm a little disappointed in the way it seems to be going, but I really want to see how she wraps it all up.
  25. Next time Michelle, listen when they say 'Not for arachnophobes'! Please tell me that was proven to be a hoax!
