After a couple of 6's, and a 5, it was nice to see a 9!
-
Yea, I might make it a holiday read.
-
The nice thing about bootfair books is that they can be sooo cheap (the 2 classics, for example, are in lovely condition, and cost me 10p each!), so I don't mind taking a chance with books.
-
Picked up a few at a bootfair this morning...
Mitch Albom - The Five People You Meet in Heaven, which I'm looking forward to.
Philippa Gregory - Perfectly Correct.. I wouldn't have picked this up if I didn;t know the authors name. Not sure what to expect, but will give it a try.
Dorothy Koomson - The Cupid Effect.. again, not sure if I would have picked this up, but I really enjoyed her writing in 'My Best Friend's Girl', so will give it a try.
David Gemmel - Winter Warriors.. this looks like a 'stand-alone', but on further investiagtion, may be in a series? Never mind, it was cheap! lol
I also picked up Jayne Eyre and Wuthering Heights.

As for The Bartimaeus Triology, I was sad to see this one end. Jonathan Storud provides an easy to read fantasy format, and personally, I think he's funnier than Pratchett! I'll be looking out for more of his!
-
Empress Orchid was a really enjoyable book.. easy to read, and yet quite absorbing. It's also one of those books that has stayed with me since, so the impact it has is probably deeper than I realised.
-
I can't make my mind up about The Mermaid's Singing.. I think if I'd picked it up at random, I may have really enjoyed it. However, it's hyped on the back of the book, and I'd read someone saying it had really scared them.. and so to a certain extent it did disappoint.
If you like crime books about serial killers, and you ignore the hype, you'll probably really like it. In fact, it had excellent reviews at Amazon, so maybe I was just missing something...?

Sorry to hear about you rmum Inver.. that's always so so hard. :friends:
I've just picked this book up for 50p at a bootfair, and am looking forward to reading it.

As the story progressed, I found myself getting more and more frustrated with Nuharoo. What redeeming features (apart from her looks) does she have that made Hsien Feng choose her as his first Empress?
Wasn't she chosen beforehand, something to do with her family and background?
-
Your explaining so well what I would have trouble putting into words!
-
I've almost finished the last one, and I don't want Bartimeaus to go either.
I just loved the confusion over 'Duck', when they ended up in the lake!
(It wouldn't make sense out of context, but Kat should understand.)

You get loads from CBUK Kell

Now we have a nice site, with lovely members, and tons and tons of posts, it's a good time for members here to help promote the site to others.
1) Kell has made us some fliers that you can save and print...
Flier for selling - if you sell, swap or give away books, then this is ideal to slip inside.
Small flier 1 / Small fliers 2 & 3 - there are 3 different designs. They can be given to friends, so they don't have to memorise the URL, they can be slipped in library books when you return them, or they can even be discreetly left somewhere!
2) I would like to get some leaflets made, so that they can be saved and printed in the same way. I then thought that members could ask in their local libraries if it's ok for them to have a few.
3) We're working on more content for the actual site, as this seems to get picked up better by the search engines. Plus, if the site is useful for people, it may draw them to the forum.
4) If you post on other forums, and they allow signatures, you could promote the forum that way. If you want a small graphic to use, you can use
>> If anyone is feeling creative, and can come up with some leaflet designs, I would be very grateful.
>> Also, if you have any other ideas, please let me know. Is there any particular content you feel would be useful on the site, or do you have any other ideas to promote us?

Sshhh.. I have no money, so stop tempting me!!
-
It's gotten some great reviews on Amazon too.. one to look out for.
-
For once, I've finished the RC book before you've even picked it up! LOL
-
Sigh.. Amazon Marketplace had a 'very good' one for 0.01p, so I gave in. You lot are a bad influence on me!! LOL
-
I'm sure my library had it... but then I have a few on TBR pile that are calling...
Oh, the decisions! LOL
-
I do like authors that can write very different styles, and I certainly fancy giving this one a go.
-
(I'm just moving this.
)
I'm afraid I've not heard of it.. do you have any idea at all what it'a about?
-
Yes, the life they lead inside the Forbidden City is amazing, wrapped up in so many traditions, rituals etc.
I've nearly finished, and I have really enjoyed it. I picked up 'Memoirs of a Geisha' yesterday, and I'm interested to see how they compare.
-
Welcome to the forum, by the way.
Which of the autobiographies did you find interesting? I keep looking at Sharon Osbourne's. I didn't know Richard and Judy had written one.
-
I can't remember the actual storyline of the first one, because it was a while ago. I did enjoy The Golem's Eye, and I've started Ptolemy's Gate.. but I started Empress Orchid, and have gotten myself caught up with that one instead!

I've just picked up Dreamer at the library, to take on holiday. It looks interesting, but the reviews on Amazon aren't so good. Has anyone on here read it??
