Are you the main reader in your life?
dtrpath27 replied to Anna Begins's topic in General Book Discussions
We're a bunch of bookworms here. I actually read the least out of my family! -
Thanks so much!!! Glad to be back.

I love pie. Cherry, custard, sweet potato. Pecan used to be up there, but I've had some bad ones lately so it's turned me off from them.

Jason Gurley, Jason Gurley! Start with The Dark Age. You won't be disappointed. I know I recommend his stuff like crazy, but I really love it. -
We just sat down last night and watched the first episode of Scorpion. Loved it! It's going to be our new replacement for Numb3rs.

Aww!!! Thanks for the warm re-welcome everyone! I've missed being on here with you guys. I hope all is well! I'm not reading anything at the moment; any recommendations? I feel like I've been living under a rock these past few months.

I would recommend a favorite of many from a few months back: The Rosie Project. It's relatable, accessible, doable (all the ables and ibles covered), and it's a great, well-written story. I would also recommend a short story...so many good ones to choose from.

Lexicon by Max Barry. Gritty is definitely how I'd describe it. Eta: My husband really likes the Jack Reacher books. Very manly.

Hi everyone! I was on here quite a bit in the past, but have been away for the past few months. I'm excited to be back and am ready to settle back into reading and talking about books with everyone at BCF.

Yeah, it's based on a really small sample size and they extrapolate out from there. Apparently it's something like the percentage of extrapolated viewers to the extrapolated number of viewers at a given time or something like that. So at 5:00 on a Wednesday when everyone is driving home from work, there might be a much smaller number of potential viewers watching tv, but a large percentage of that small number is watching Wheel of Fortune, so Wheel of Fortune gets a great rating. Friday night, however, millions and millions more might be watching LOST, but the overall number of potential viewers is WAY higher than it was on Wednesday night, so although LOST is infinitely more amazing than Wheel of Fortune, and has a higher number of viewers, it receives an apparently lower rating. Screwy. It's rather unreliable and confusing. The Nielsen ratings are geared more for marketing and industry statistics rather than for viewers. I don't give them much credence at all.

Where are you getting the ratings? If it's Nielsen ratings, those are kind of screwy.

With my old ISP, if I just told them I was going to switch service, they would lower my fees back to the introductory price. It's such a scam. It's never ending!

Do you mean ABC and NBC? My friend has all the bells and whistles on his satellite service. He pays well over $150/month. o_O
-
A basic satellite package is usually a little more than $40/month. People who go all out with movie & sports packages spend a lot more. I can't see spending $500.00/year on TV, so we just watch the free stuff and get the rest when it comes out on Netflix.

I don't think CBS has ever been the biggest. Ratings wise it seems NBC has traditionally been the most successful, especially in the area of comedies. ABC tends to do really well because they have stuff that's a bit different. (Case in point: Twin Peaks, Modern Family, Once Upon a Time) CBS seems to do a lot of crime/mystery/action type stuff. They're kind of hit or miss. Obviously, Big Bang and How I Met Your Mother are two of their hits. They've kind of beaten the whole CSI thing to death, though. CSI Miami, Vegas, New York...it's like they couldn't come up with anything better.

ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and the CW along with various PBS stations are all free here. TNT, USA and SYFY are among channels offered in a basic cable/satellite package. Stars, Encore, HBO, Showtime and Cinemax are part of premium movie packages that you can buy in addition to your basic satellite/cable package. And boy do you pay a premium for those channels! A fairly large percentage of middle class people have satellite TV. Not all of them have movie packages, but it's not at all uncommon. In some areas, in order to get reception, you have to pay for satellite/cable. I do have to say that since they switched to all digital and added an expanded number of channels, I come across more people who seem to be opting out of satellite altogether, though.

Good to know. I was so surprised and confused all at once! There are so many superfluous channels. The weather channel is handy if there's a blizzard, hurricane or tornado brewing, but for local weather, network TV is best. The weather channel never seems to be on the part of the country you need it to be. I never cared for Two and a Half Men with Ashton Kutcher. The balance was off. I didn't know Cougar Town was still on. I thought it was cancelled years ago. I thought How I Met Your Dad sounded lame, so I'm kind of glad it didn't go through. I must have been typing as you were posting!

Not necessarily; sometimes they can hit a home run. LOST, one of my top five of all time, was really amazing and aired on ABC. Once Upon a Time, which is also very worth watching, is also ABC. NBC is usually good for comedies, but those can be rather culture-based, and I can see where it might not translate. However, NBC has produced some of the most iconic sitcoms in U.S. television history. In the drama field, NBC produced ER. Although it ran for a couple seasons longer than it probably should have, it was really groundbreaking at the time and dealt with quite controversial issues with a frankness and realism that hadn't been seen before. There is a fair amount of fluff as well, but I think discounting network tv altogether is rather like throwing out the baby with the bathwater. However, I suppose it all depends on what you're looking for.

I'm surprised, too, that that many U.S. channels are available in Sweden. I couldn't even get most of those channels here unless I paid for them. When I lived in Japan, we could only get a couple U.S. channels on cable/satellite.

Working retail is exhausting, isn't it? I'm glad you got the day off for the wedding.

We used to have the whole series on VHS.

It could be either the battery, the power cord, the port or a combination. I had this problem before and it acted like you are describing. If you have a multimeter you can test it yourself. If not, someone at a little computer shop might be willing to check that for free. Also try taking out the battery, blowing off the connectors with some compressed air then putting it back in. Maybe the connection is bad. Another thing, that happened to my daughter's computer and also caused it to act just like you were describing, is that if the fan is on the bottom and not the side, it's possible that it overheated and you fried something in the computer that is causing the problem. Do you use it on soft surfaces (your lap or in bed) without a cooling mat? Those are all the experiences I've had with the problem. I hope you've found a solution!

Umm...that's exactly what my old computer did when it got a particularly nasty virus. I finally found a post that explained how to go in and rewrite some code or something to remove it. I don't remember exactly what I had to do or where I found it, but that is the only thing that worked.
