The Girl From Krakow by Alex Rosenberg (454 pages) "We can't waste time wondering what this war means in human history. Human history doesn't mean anything. The war is just a catastrophe no different from a new ice age, only happening much faster, more like the Black Death." ~ Rita, applying Darwin to WWII Rita Feuerstahl is an Aryan looking Jewish woman studying law in Krakow just before the war begins. Rapidly falling into a lovless marriage, Rita and Urs move to Karpatyn and have a son. An affair on her part and a botched suicide on his part, the war arrives and splits everyone up. After sending her son to her parents for safety back to Poland, The Girl From Krakow has many surprises in Rita's life that may or may not save her- living with forged documents, meeting random strangers, working as housekeeping for Nazi's, trying to blend in and sort of succeeding. Mixed in is some philosophy (the author teaches at Duke University) and always those same questions- why did I survive when so many others did not? What a wonderful read, I couldn't put it down and finished in two days.

A Face in the Crowd by Stephen King and Stewart O' Nan (16 pages) From Amazon (snipped) Dean Evers, an elderly widower, sits in front of the television with nothing better to do than waste his leftover evenings watching baseball. Me: This Kindle Single was a really good one. Behind homeplate, Evers starts seeing people from his past that he has wronged in his life. But wait- aren't those people dead already? Evers decides to go to a game and find out. Is he having a breakdown? The beginnings of dementia? A welcome surprise to my nightly insomnia and a fun addition to my read a thon. Recommended

We were only given two years of foreign language, with the option of two more years. We had French, Spanish (which I stupidly did not take- I live in California for heaven's sake) or Russian. I took three and a half years of Russian. I can understand some Ukrainian and Putin, when he speaks. But I can't read it or write it, really, anymore. Not many Russian speakers to talk with lol. I do read lots of Russian literature and history, which were never included in my classes.

This afternoon, I finished The Walls Around Us by Nova Den Suma... I'm still trying to figure out what I just read. It started with a quote from The Handmaid's Tale, so. Now on to Alex Rosenberg's The Girl From Krakow. I never have read any WWII fiction!

I finished Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar (read it in high school). Started The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma. It won out over Hitler Out of Time, which I hope to read for the read a thon in April.

I agree with Allegiant, I also have to site Firefight by Brandon Sanderson from The Reckoners trilogy, the second book from the Legend series by Marie Lu- Prodigy. The last book of The Made Runner I didn't like either, The Death Cure. Oh! And from Philippa Gregory's Cousins War series, The Lady of the Rivers was pretty bad in comparison to the others in the series

That's too bad about The Girl... I really liked it, but the twist was ruined for me too. Loved the idea of the ending. Great review of The Pact, it has been one of my favorite books this year (but I wasn't surprised as Plain Truth was awesome and I read that last year, it was my first Picoult).

Noll, I feel the same way about my slippers Easter went well, the big Easter basket item was a pair of blue light blocking glasses for when she is on her IPad (constantly). They are light pink frames with purple sides . My mom made a delicious ham and baked homemade macaroni and cheese. Now, back to normal...

I don't think it's cliffhangers that bother me so much-needed in fact it sort of makes me want to read the next book...what it's supposed to do lol. I just hate when it takes so long for the others to come out, it ruins the flow. What did you get??
