  1. You have been to the town take made Cicely!! ( but green with envy too) It's about time that we saw M*A*S*H again, or way too long since we (in the UK) saw it. I adore Hawkeye
  2. Thanks frankie, I will mosey on down to poppyshakes for her thoughts for TRP soon. I mosey'd on down to the bookshop this morning, but they don't have the tickets yet, as the venue is not confirmed, but they will phone me when the tickets are available
  3. Placebo! Ooh, *green with envy*
  4. 1/3 read of The Shooting Party. Now I've found that Chekhov was a very witty, it's a joy to read.
  5. I'm planning to go to my local indie bookshop tomorrow. There will be an event in my local town, in early February, when author Graham Simsion comes to talk about his novel The Rosie Project! How exciting!! I haven't read it yet, has anyone read it? Good or bad reports? Hopefully I'll get my ticket for the event tomorrow, as you get a signed copy and you can have a few words with the author (in a chit-chat signing thing).
  6. The film is really good , but the book goes much, much deeper, in time scale and in Stevens character. A wonderful book .
  7. To me one the most important attractions of a man is his sense of humour . There are a lot of other attractions . You have an incredibly sharp mind frankie, especially for wordplay, with the "joke around on his expense", is very witty. Especially as it in English. You are so !! When I first read that line, I thought it was "joke around on his expenses a little" Hey, wouldn't it be wonderful for you to do both; to joke around on a guys expense and his expenses at the same time .
  8. Georges Perec's the art and craft of approaching your head of department to submit a request for a raise arrived this morning a book with no composition so no commas no semi colon or full stops what a crazy guy georges must have been
  9. Thanks xx . I need to concentrate on that book, rather than flitting around from a handful I'm reading at the moment. Let's see how it goes *fingers being crossed*
  10. Well, it's on my wishlist now !. Sounds like I will need a box of tissues handy though...
  11. Yes, lovely review , of one of the most beautiful and haunting books I've read. Everyone should try it.
  12. That is so true . If you find a man who thinks that women shouldn't have senses of humour, and women should only laugh at his jokes, RUN LIKE HELL!!
  13. Ooh, that would be a good idea to get some 'quality time' for reading . I have read a few chapters of Chekhov's The Shooting Party, but that's three weeks to achieve that s, I can't really get into the book yet.
  14. That was a great haul chaliepud ! A hardback of Alan Bennetts for 79p, that's spectacular! 79p from Waitrose ... ... ...
  15. Hope you do enjoy At Home, that is another great one of Bill's .
  16. Ouch! Such a pity not to see that video again, but in the circumstances ....
  17. I think that having a good sense of humour is absolutely essential, especially if it is wicked and quirky. I've always known that when things get tough, it is a great help to have a quirky sense of humour. And not to be too serious about yourself. As I have just read all these wonderful and hilarious posts from Kylie, poppyshakes and pontalba, they are perfect examples .oh dear, I laughed so much that I was literally crying with laughter.Thank goodness that waterproof mascara really does work.
  18. oh, you will love maturity, but you have decades to go before that, you young whippersnapper! or if you don't love it, at least accept it gracefully .
  19. Now, having to work out the math in your head, to remember your age is a classic symptom of maturity ! It still surprises me that I am 48, I still feel as when I was in my early 30's. I thought turning 40 could be awful, but nothing did happen. Just enjoy you life frankie, and have fun with your birthday, or any day for that matter .
  20. No, it can't be 12 years already . I would have thought is was 4 or 5 years . I can still remember see The Skids with Into The Valley on Top of the Tops, when Richard Jobson was only about 16 then. I can hardly believe it was in 1979.... .Those were the days .
  21. YAAAAAY....Teenage Kicks, oh wow, I haven't heard that for a long time.... Or this
  22. Oh lord, you are so right . Maybe I should get myself a cheery, Christmas avatar, like yours . Wait, hold on, I'm so used to being a Xmas grouch .
  23. Oh yes, it's seems to be set sometime after the end of world war 2, and for some reason people only have horse and cart, or bicycles, but no motor vehicles . Post-war hard times, possibly . Those first names must be old fashioned, it sounded to someone young like you . Sanelma remind me of the English name Sandra, which was more popular up to the 1970's, but is very unfashionable now. They call Gunner the miller "Kunnari, in the Finnish way", and are seem to be prejudiced as he came from South Finland. The local people seem to be very small minded. As my art tutor friend says, about mojo problems - "don't force it, just wait until it happens" - which is good advice, but it still you off big-time when it isn't happening.
  24. Yes, The Howling Miller really is a good book , with lots of Kafkaesque twists in the plot. There was some love interest between Gunner the miller and the 4H Federation teacher Sanelma, but then .... well, I couldn't tell you any more, unless you read the book . I hope that your reading mojo improves . Mine seems to have kicked in again, after the last few weeks when it was pathetic.
