  1. I agree with you both, this bothers me a lot. While I'm not in a book group, I wanted to let you know anyway, to show you're not alone! It would especially bother me in a book group because it is very rude. Normally, in any large group (more than 4 people) it bothers me because I hear everything so depending on the group I can hear 2-3 or more conversations going on at once. This is really confusing and usually ends up in me not being able to follow any of them.
  2. That sounds like a good idea, sure we can do that . Although I might be tempted to read a lot on both Saturday and Sunday (Friday I have to do uni work).
  3. I haven't heard of this author before, but his novels sound quite different! I may have to put one on the wishlist . Any you recommend I start with (keeping in mind I don't know tons about British history, only some of it)?
  4. x I keep seeing this author's name but know very little about her or the books. Can you name me more books or authors that are like this author, that I may have heard of, or can you describe what they're like? (or do you not know it exactly yourself, since you just bought them after all XD) x x Not to spam up the Circle Read thread, but that's quite a coincidence . It's on my TBR, I haven't really heard much about it but it sounded interesting and I saw it cheap.. I haven't read it yet but if it gets chosen, it would be great to read it with the group. If it doesn't get chosen, I look forward to read/hear what you think anyway . I've started to (re)read Roald Dahl - The Witches (for a fiction book). I read this in Dutch when I was a child (own a hardback copy of it). It's one of my favourite Roald Dahl books. It's short (relatively speaking) so I thought it'd be a good, somewhat quick read. I planned to read quite a bit of it today but ended up doing bits of other things too, as usual XD (ie. I got a phonecall). Still, so far it's interesting. I keep thinking back of the film too, and the differences between the book and film. I saw the film more recently (that is, a few years ago) compared with when I read the book (many years ago). I'm really enjoying the book so far.
  5. Excellent, the more the merrier (in this case)! That's fine, as long as you enjoy reading bits of your books .
  6. It's on my TBR, I hope you like it . I look forward to read your review of it.
  7. x I'll have to read that list sometime . EDIT: Neither I nor the forum can seem to find it, is it on this forum? x x This sounds like a good idea . x x Thanks, will let you know what I think when I read it. I haven't really been in the mood for paranormal type books lately. Hmm maybe I could put it on my "perhaps-read-at-the-read-a-thon" pile (in my head). EDIT: Rest of post edited into read-a-thon thread.
  8. x Glad to hear you can join! x x Sorry to hear you don't have much time, I hope you have fun with your kids and dogs though . x x Yes, indeed . x x I was going to read some things I don't normally read much of, ie. maybe a manga, classic and/or a detective, along with genres I do read a lot of, ie. a chick-lit or contemporary and a fantasy or science-fiction (EDIT: maybe also the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series, or another paranormal or YA book). I also would like to read bits of an information book on Kindle but too much knowledge at one time hurts the brain, so I'll only read bits of it I think. And yes, I really like that too! x x Sorry to hear you don't have much time on Sundays, maybe next time (if this one is successful) we can do it on a different day . I hope you'll have fun reading the thread. x Thanks ! I hope you'll have some time. x x That's great to hear . In relation to the planning, I may have to wait a little while for my answer on the uni planning. My graduation might be postponed and in that case I'll have more time in the upcoming.. times/dates. The week of the 26th is still not good due to RoboCup, the finals are on Sunday the 30th so I might go and watch (or follow the live-stream). I'll let you all know when I know more, until then the list I posted earlier is probably still in effect, if anything there'll be dates added to it and not removed so.. Just thinking of what I'll read is making me all giddy. I already have a few things in mind (most notably short books), but about the larger ones I'm not quite sure yet (I do love making a little TBR). EDIT: How many hours do you all think you'll have to read throughout the day? How many books or pages do you think you'll get through? I think I have 8-14 hours depending on things. I can read 60-100 pages in an hour if I feel well, depending on the size of the pages and font size, etc. So I could get through some shorter books quickly, but if I pick more longer ones it'll take longer. Dilemmas!
  9. x That makes sense . x x It's a shame, would like to see more Dutch people around. x I can send it as a letter / little package going through the mailbox, but then it must fix through the mailbox (which is the case for some books but not others). That would be quite a bit cheaper and is doable for the small paperbacks I have . I don't mind paying 9 euros if I can get rid of 4-5 books but for one book it doesn't seem worth it. x x Yes, that's exactly what it's like for me too! x x That's very well done of you! I'm sure I've bought more than 100 books , I haven't counted them but.. x x Yep! x x Thank you!! x x XD that happens, that's why I try to post some thoughts about them not too long after I finish them. x @ your review of Grave Sight Shame it wasn't as good as the Sookie Stackhouse books. I have those also on my TBR so that at least promises something good . I'll still read the Harper Connelly series, I bought all four books for cheap so it wouldn't be a big loss in money if I didn't like them that much (hopefully though it'll be quite okay ). @ your review of Yes Man I didn't know it was a non-fiction book, and its premise sounds quite interesting, I'll have to buy and read it sometime . I recorded the film from TV quite a while ago but I haven't watched it yet XD.
  10. I hope your exam today went allright, too . When is your next lot? I hope you can do some reading in the meantime .
  11. Yesterday I watched an episode of Friends, one of the first few episodes of season one (I think it was the second but it may have been the third. The way the menu of the dvd is laid out, I wasn't entirely sure). I love this show, I bought the whole series on DVD ages ago and have watched it many times since. I needed something short to watch so thought I'd start over rewatching it (I watched episode one or one and two a while ago). I actually planned to watch the pilot episode (1H30min) of Kommissar Rex but my sister phoned and we talked for a while, so there was no more time (or energy). I've now agreed with her we maybe watch it together in the weekend when she's coming over. Kommissar Rex (called Inspector Rex in English) is a German/Austrian TV show from the 90s. It's about an inspector, his team and his dog who solve murders and capture the criminals. The dog is my favourite aspect of the show, he's cute and clever (and funny too). I recently bought the first two seasons on DVD (I'd bought the double episodes earlier) and thought it was a good opportunity to start watching them again. The cast changes, I liked the first two main characters (season one-three one and season four to hmm seven-eight? another) but after that I didn't care for it anymore, too much was changed and I didn't like the new characters. The first couple of seasons are really nice though, I wish they'd publish the rest of the seasons here (other than the first two) on DVD. Gladly I have some of it on videotape.
  12. x That's one of the problems I'd have as well (other than the fact that social interaction (in real life) really tires me, of course). I'm very happy with this forum!
  13. I don't abandon a lot of books, generally I try to stick with it. There have been a few I abandoned, for example: Jodi Picoult - Songs of a Humpback Whale (a few years ago) and Eleanor Druse - The Journals of Eleanor Druse (many years ago). The first one I couldn't get into, so I abandoned it and decided to read it when I'm in a different mood (I haven't rated it yet). I love most of Jodi Picoult's other novels that I've read by her so far, so I don't know why I had problems with this one. Eleanor Druse - The Journals of Eleanor Druse (Dutch version) was just dreadful, I didn't enjoy it at all at the time and if/when I get rid of some books (ie. charityshop etc), I'll get rid of it. I don't remember many others, there'll probably have been some but not in the recent years at least.
  14. That's good to know. I have the film recorded from TV from quite a while ago, I still haven't watched it XD. I might have to buy the book . I didn't know it was a non-fiction book, I thought it was fiction. That makes it even more interesting I think.
  15. x I really enjoyed this one, I hope you do too . EDIT: I'm reading Charles H. Elliott & Laura L. Smith - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder for Dummies on the Kindle. It won't go on this certain page of the book, I skipped past it by going to the next chapter, so far in the chapters after it I'm not having any issues. Gladly missing out one page or several pages (I'm not sure how many, but not a lot), isn't too big of a deal in a self-help book. It'd be worse in a fiction book where a plot twist may be missing. I'm also reading Luc Swinnen - Stress is geen probleem as paperbook (Luc Swinnen is a Belgian author). I haven't read any Dutch in a while, the book is easy to read so far though (I only read maybe 10 pages, I've been reading more on the Kindle). I want to start a story book, but I can't quite decide yet which one XD. I'm doubting between two manga's, Roald Dahl - The Witches and George R. R. Martin - A Song of Fire and Ice 1: Game of Thrones.
  16. Glad to hear you're interested ! This is just a quick post as I have to go back to cooking, but I just received an email that might mean changing my uni planning. I'll let you know in a few days, if anything changes.
  17. @ frankie Well after handing in my thesis, I have a few weeks to work on my presentation. I presume after I've given it, I'll have lots of time for a little while. I give the talk beginning of July (hopefully on the 2nd, if necessary I can postpone it a week, to the 9th). I'm not sure what would be handy, it could also be a nice distraction from my work, or it could be nice to wait. I'll have to think about it . I don't have much to do on the upcoming Sundays other than doing a bit of uni work (not as much as during the week), feeding the animals (I do this every day) and spending a bit of time with my family. So it's not too bad atm. In July, my boyfriend will be here some of the time, I'm sure though if I'd ask him he'd not mind me doing a read-a-thon. It'll be hard for me though to not spend a bit of time with him. I'm not sure what would be handy when XD. I was going to wait until we have some people and we can then see when most people would be available. Oh yeah, the week before the 2nd of July (so from around the 26-06 until after 02-07) is not good for me either, because I'll be busy with the presentation and there's also RoboCup going on. I plan to visit and see one or two games (RoboCup is a competition between soccer playing robots (see here)). Possible Sundays (for me): 27-05 02-06 16-06 14-07 and later (23-06 I'm unsure about at this point in time) @ Alexi Nice to hear that .
  18. Awww , I hope you will find more time to read soon. I look forward to read your reading blog, your reviews seem quite unique!
  19. Good luck!! What kind of job is it?
  20. That's great to hear ! Did you get anything you're particularly looking forward to reading?
  21. x Most of them are Dutch books but I have some English ones. Out of those, a few are nice to great but double, unread copies (so they're nearly, almost brand new.). Another few are books I didn't like (as would thus be reluctant to recommend to anyone else). There are also a few (up the attic atm) that I'm not interested in but got for free (ie. books about soccer). I'd happily give them away for free but I don't know anyone who'd be interested (I don't remember the titles, I'd have to go get the box). Then there is I think one second hand book I bought at a charity shop that I turned out to already have (so a double copy, but a read one). And hmm it could be a good time to get rid of some of the big books I don't like and buy smaller ones instead (ie. I wanted a small paperback but it's a bigger one, or it was cheap etc).. Our post site says if your package is between 0 and 2 kg it would cost 9 euros to send to zone Europe 1. Imo it would mean that ideally I'd put multiple books (or however much it is until it's 1.5 ish kg) in the box, to get the maximum for the price (that is if anyone would be willing to swap). For one book, it's not really worth sending it for 9 euros, since for the same amount or sometimes less, I could buy a new book (unless said book is rare, expensive, hardcover, etc). I do love getting packages XD. Are there any books anyone else wants to get rid of? x x Thanks . I plan to hold out until at least I'm done with uni. After that, I plan to tackle this problem (as well as my weight and other things, I plan to post some updates on the forum by then). It's true I still have a lot of books TBR (a few of which I'm not so interested in anymore, since my interests have changed throughout my life). x x I like Astrid Lindgren's books too. I haven't heard of this series you mention, I have read other books by her though. Don't feel too bad, at least the money went to a good cause. I understand you feel bad though, you like getting the books but you feel guilty about it too (I assume). I think you're doing great, keep up the good work! For me, Kindle books and books on sale, or cheap books are the most dangerous. I can generally hold off if I find a paperbook a bit pricy. But if it's on sale for a cheap price, that you don't see often and it was on my wishlist, well.. That's difficult. In my defense, the past year I have been trying to buy less videogames (because I felt I had too many to be played and I've been feeling too tired to play most of them), and I have quite well succeeded in that! So I've tackled that problem already (I do love books more than videogames, though). I can't tackle all my problems at once, that would be overwhelming (and I do have a few ). @ book reviews Wow, you've read a lot, frankie! Nice to read your reviews .
  22. That week isn't good for me either, frankie. I have to hand in my thesis on the 15th so will be busy the week before making it (hopefully) great. So I wasn't going to suggest a day in that week. Based on what you say and my own preferences, a Sunday might be a good idea? EDIT: Of course the week before the 8th I'll still be busy making it great, I didn't mean to imply I'll be slacking off at any given time! But it's nice to have the time in the week before the 15th, reserved in case I need it.
  23. I hope more people will find the topic eventually, I don't mind waiting. I'm not sure about the planning yet, which day would be the best for people generally? (I mean ie. a Monday, Saturday.. and how soon should it be) I was planning on starting the thread when it's time, yes , I'd be happy to do that .
