Oh, but what a lovely dilemma to have!

Perhaps you could take The Phantom Tollbooth and finish reading it? It's a nice light story and won't take up much room. :)

Have fun in Nurmes and good luck with your book search! When will you be back? By the way, how do you pronounce Nurmes? I have a way of pronouncing it but I just know it's wrong!

Ah yes, I didn't stop to consider that different libraries have very different selections. I guess I've been really lucky, because the library in my hometown where I grew up was (and is) a really great one for such a small town, and they still have new titles coming in all the time and whenever I visit it I'm astounded how updated it all feels. And the town I now live in is a university town with a lot of inhabitants (on the Finnish scale) so the library has to be decent.

There is a rather nice large library about an hour away from me, but as I don't drive I haven't been in a long time. :(

In a way, it's sort of nice, too, that your library doesn't have the most interesting collection in your opinion, because then you get to buy books, you have a great excuse for it :giggle: At least if you are a confessed book hoarder and love being one. If not, then it must suck :(

I do love buying books! Games also. You could say I'm a hoarder... but I prefer the term collector :giggle: I look at it this way, I don't drink and I don't smoke, so I buy books and games instead.

I'm open for all genres, sci-fi and fantasy aren't my strongest points but let's not mind that. I like YA and I'm a big fan of autobios. I actually have one biography of an Australian author, I wonder if you've heard of her? Her name was Eve Langley and she lived in Katoomba, in NSW. She did change her name to Oscar Wilde, though. I haven't read the book yet, but what I've gathered is that she was something else!

ok well, I'm not sure if you have read the series, but John Marsdens Tomorrow when the war began YA series was a huge hit with me. I still have all the books, and must of read them at least seven times. The first book got turned into a movie (I do remember talking about that with someone on here).

That's how I always justify it, too. :D I like computer games but sadly never have time to play. :( The closest I get these days is playing game apps on my iPad.

I'm not sure if you know this, but Frankie actually came to visit me a couple of years ago. While she was here I gave her some Aussie books to read, including, of course, Tomorrow, When the War Began (my generosity didn't quite extend to buying all 10 books!) She hasn't read it yet (:(), but maybe she will now that we are both on her case. Hey, Frankie, you should pack this to take with you!

Ah, OK. It will always be Ner-mez to me. :giggle:

Oh, but what a lovely dilemma to have!

It wasn't lovely, I had too little time and I didn't have any ideas. So I got a few lights books. Rebecca, Howards End Is on the Landing, The Day of the Triffids, Quantum Leap, and hm, was there anything else... can't remember at the moment. We'll see what happens!

Have fun in Nurmes and good luck with your book search! When will you be back? By the way, how do you pronounce Nurmes? I have a way of pronouncing it but I just know it's wrong!

You guys don't pronounce the vowel 'u' the way we do, so there's no way I can really explain it to you. The closest you can get is probably by saying 'ner' (like as in 'nerd' but without 'd') and 'mess' (like the word). Oh Kylie, remember when I should you the clips of the crazy hockey fanatic Finns and they kept yelling 'SUOMI!' (which means Finland in Finnish) and you thought they yelled swarmi? Well, our 'u' sounds like that. Does that make any sense? If your 'sw' is our 'su'. Well it doesn't really work with nw.

There is a rather nice large library about an hour away from me, but as I don't drive I haven't been in a long time.

That's a really long way away even if you did drive :empathy:

Very well reasoned, although over here you don't really have to explain yourself to us :D You're in good company :friends3:

Like Kylie has already told you, I do have the first book in the series :) So keep the suggestions coming!

I believe you missed the R in the name (Nurmes) and for that reason got it a bit wrong :)

Hey, you got it right! I'm not sure if there would be much of a difference between mez and mess. Hehe, you are learning Finnish already! :D

I missed that in my previous reply. I'm probably going back to Joensuu on Sunday. The weather's lovely, it's sunny and warm and I feel like staying here and just reading. I also promised Dad I'd do a bit of work for him, he has loads of wood planks that have nails in them and I need to remove them and then saw the planks to smaller pieces and then stash them in the house. I think the wood will be used to warm up the sauna :smile2:

Ooh, I just had a lovely sauna an hour ago or so. Nice!! I tell you guys, there's nothing better in the world than Finnish summer. Well, maybe tassie devils, little lizards, books and Rocky Road :giggle: Oh and echidnas. Dogs!!

Oh yeah back on topic. Dad and I already went to the library. I found nothing!! Well, a Jules Verne book but it was in Finnish. I also found a sequel to Daddy-Long-Legs which bree just reviewed earlier, but as it was a sequel I left it there. But Dad bought four books! One was about Finnish patriotism or something like that, some book on Finnish woods and wildlife, and two books about some athlete legends. He's going to send one of them to my godfather, Dad's brother, who's into that sort of stuff.

I did borrow one book from the library: Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane. I've seen it at the Joensuu library many times, but in Finnish, this copy was in English. But I'll have to see if I have time to read any of the books I have with me. But I always think it's better to be prepared and have too many books than too few!

Well, I don't know much about Quantum Leap (wasn't that a TV show or something?) but I approve of the first three choices. :)

Yep, it's a novelisation of the TV series. I loved that show!! There are a series of the books, this book I bought is the first one I think and it explains what happened before. Or well, I'm not exactly sure yet. But yeah, it's about the show :) Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell make a mighty fine book cover :giggle2::lol:

Well I don't know what is happening, but you nailed it this time :D I think my Finnish is rubbing off on you in some telepathic way. Or you are just a natural but was too scared to try before because you were worried you might make mistakes. Which you obviously don't :D

Oh, a sauna sounds great right about now. I'm snuggled under my blanky and just had a hot chocolate to keep warm. :cold:

Wow, you're doing hard labour! Sounds like nice weather for it though.

Shame you didn't find many books on your trip, but you've got some shops to visit too, right? I hope you have better luck. :friends3:

I wish it was one of those things, but unfortunately I think I just got lucky because I was just pronouncing it phonetically, which I think wouldn't work with too many Finnish words.

Do you have your Finnish socks on? Oh is that the new electric blanky? And btw did you already buy that hot water bottle thing? I remember how cold you used to get, you are like the coldest person I know! (That doesn't sound right but you know what I mean from that context ) Keep warm, hun! :friends3:

Kylie wrote: Wow, you're doing hard labour! Sounds like nice weather for it though.

Yep, Imma build me some muscle *kissing my biceps* Parents were bummed they already raked the leaves and didn't realise they could leave it for me  And the grass doesn't need cutting either, so in that respect it's a lazy vacation. I don't mind doing the nail removing, I sometimes like doing stuff like that, something concrete for a change. Remember when my lighter fell under the grate and we had to fish it out, and we called your Dad to the rescue but ended up succeeding on our own? :D

Kylie wrote: Shame you didn't find many books on your trip, but you've got some shops to visit too, right? I hope you have better luck.

Yep, a few places. The other one is a pretty crappy place, I don't expect to find anything there, but you never know. Oh, it's a kind of a charityshop and they mostly sell clothes. But anyways, don't expect any bookish reports, there's probably nothing I can find. I'll more likely find some DVD box from some shop. Oooh I'd love to get all the seasons of The Big Bang Theory! Oooh I seriously need to buy the Gilmore Girls DVD boxes. You realise I've kept saying that ever since I came back to Finland from Australia??

(An error occurred when I tried replying, it said something about quote tags and all that jazz, so had to reply in this way. This laptop is driving me crazy!)

It is sci-fi! :smile2: Sam Beckett is a scientist who was a part of a team who invented a time traveling machine (I think) but the thing gets jammed somehow and he always goes back in time, he has to save someone's life or rescue them in some other way and then he leaps to another moment in time and becomes another person so needs to help someone or who needs to act in a way that he doesn't get killed. Man it was a great show!

And yes, I think you are raising the subject because I've been talking about me not reading sci-fi/fantasy and all that, but I guess I do, more than I think! So haha, I'm not as prejudiced as I, or some other people, might think! :P

No not as of yet, the books made a huge impact on me when I read them and I don't want to mess with that by watching the movie, in case I don't like it.

When you say the last three, do you mean the Ellie chronicles? I read the first one (While I Live and wasn't overly impressed like with the original seven, so stayed away from the other two.

I know what you mean about the movie, but I was just way too curious to see it. I haven't read the book since I saw the movie, but I don't think it will affect my enjoyment at all.

Yes, I mean the Ellie Chronicles. I agree they're not as good as the Tomorrow series, but they're still quite good. I mostly enjoyed them less because they introduced new characters and our beloved friends from the earlier books did not feature quite as much. :( I was particularly dismayed by the events in the first chapter of While I Live, and there was another scene (in the first or second book) that rather disturbed me.

When do you plan on coming back to visit again Frankie?

You guys must of had a ball! Sitting around, talking books, eating chocolate, visiting book stores! :giggle:

Like Kylie already said, I'm making her visit me once before I come back to Australia myself :giggle: It's a two-way street you know! But Kylie and all bookish things aside, I loved everything about Australia. The people were incredibly nice and welcoming and friendly. And now I love the accent, too! And the nature is so beautiful, all the trees and plants and animals, it's so different from Finland. I have some very fond memories of Australia. I hardly have any bad ones. Well the weather was a bit too hot for my liking, and it wasn't even summer yet. Dear lord! :D

I'm definitely going to visit again but it might be a few years before I can make it, unfortunately. As soon as I can, I'm coming back though! Maybe Kylie and I can come and visit you the next time :giggle: Who knows!

You guys must of had a ball! Sitting around, talking books, eating chocolate, visiting book stores! :giggle:

It was one of the bestest periods in my life :smile2: We had some amazing book hauls, and oh we went to the Canberra book fair! Oh and we also went to watch the recording of one FTBC episode, you can actually see the backs of our heads in the episode  FTBC rules! Oh and one of my personal favorites is also Letters & Numbers  It's a great show, I love the letters part in particular. And the conundrum!

You're a puzzle, Frankie! You keep saying you don't care for sci-fi/fantasy but you seem to like everything you've seen/read!

I know! It's really more the case of me not being particularly keen on picking up a sci-fi/fantasy novel to read because I fear they might be too difficult for me, or I won't like them, but then when I do, I usually like what I read. I can't think of a novel in that genre that I wouldn't have enjoyed. So I think the challenge for me is overcoming that fear and those issues.

I cannot tell a lie.

Except for when you say you are always right :giggle2:

All your talk of the Marsden series is making me feel I'm out of the loop. I think it's a trick on your part to make me read the book! Ha! I figured that one out quickly, there's no pulling one on me! :D

Yep, we had a great time. I introduced her to Rocky Road, Pavlova and Eucalyptus Oil, which she loved, and Vegemite (the least said about that the better!)

Don't forget about Tim Tams! And real fish&chips. Ooooh and KFC! And Kylie what was the name of those darnfully delicious biccies I loved. Iced VoVos? Man, they were like Pringles. One you pop, you can't stop! And the choccy mint biccies? What were they called?

But by far my, my biggest Aussie favorite is Rocky Road. Damn that's good

Yeah, you are

Oi!!!! :o

:D

I think YOU are prejudiced!

Steve, it was sooooo funny when he said in that one episode: "Oh vey!" When the audience was waiting for the usual "Oh boy!" :D

I think I particularly liked the episodes where he was a woman :giggle:

You poor Finn. I still can't believe you don't have KFC. I might go and have some today in your honour (any excuse!)

I'll have to survive. Luckily I had my two favorite Finnish delicacies today and yesterday: karjalanpiirakka and lanttukukko. Mmmmmmm.. :P

Yep, Iced VoVos. I didn't remember you liking them so much. The other biccies are Mint Slices.

Ooh yes Mint Slices, yum! Iced VoVos were awesome. They seemed a bit bland at first, but when I had some more, I felt I couldn't stop eating them. They were incredible :o

Haha. :) Is The Orchid Thief the book you bought when you were here but didn't enjoy?

Yep, I read about 1/3 of it. I liked it okay, but the book is very different from the movie Adaptation, which is based on it. I saw the movie first, there was more to the story. So I really thought The Orchid Thief was like the movie. But it was just a normal story, non-fiction on top of that. Nothing I expected. Which sucked because I loved the movie when I once saw it.

Ahh you won't have that problem here, you are almost guaranteed a cold reception (weatherwise) .. the Mistress may well freeze :o .. she will definitely need her Finnish socks (if she was ever to come that is.) It's why I eat lots .. just trying to keep my fire stoked up :D

We can definitely supply you with fish and chips, KFC's and rocky road (though I'm not saying they will be as good as the Aussie versions) but Tim Tams and iced VoVo's?? I don't think we have those. We have Marmite of course which is Vegemite's British counterpart .. but I guess you'll give that the elbow.

You poor Finn. :( I still can't believe you don't have KFC. I might go and have some today in your honour (any excuse!)

You have the same empathetic attitude to people's food cravings as I do Kylie :D I willingly go out and eat it for them, or drink it .. pregnant people are always using my services and I have to say it's no trouble at all.

You don't think she'll freeze when she gets to Finland with -20-30 degrees? It's actually good she visits England first, she'll gradually get used to things getting cooler and cooler, she won't be worried when her bits just start to fall off :giggle:

I wouldn't mind getting dressed up for that, not at all. I'm not vain, of course, it would all be done for the sake of bookish research. ;)

Is that like 'Countdown' ??

I'm afraid I don't know what that is. In L&N, the contestants are given 9 letters, of which they must come up with the longest word possible in 30 seconds. With numbers, they are given, I don't remember, how many, ack, what's the word, not numbers or digits. Like, they are given 4, 7, 9, 35, 21, 100. And they will need to use those number to get to the target number, for instance 754. Each number can only be used once, and you can do x, -, / or + with or without ( ). Awesome game :D

Man .. we is twins!

Why were we separated at birth :( We would've had such fun times as kiddies!!!

There's actually an online store that sells VoVos and Tim Tams, I've been tempted :giggle: And yeeees I believe we don't need much Marmite... :giggle2: We can eat cheesecake?! And I want to try pudding.

Here's a link to my Half-Time Review on The Hippopotamus.

And here's the rest:

I've now finished the novel and I'm really happy I stuck out the first 20 pages and got into the book and finally read the whole thing, it was a pleasurable experience, all disturbing bits included. Fry got back into a good story-telling mode after the gory stuff I'd last read of the book, and the novel went into a kind of epic saga in short -mode for a while. Further hilarities ensued after that, and then it seems like I was reading a good old murder mystery at the end of the novel: what exactly happened, how, who and why. The Bell meets Hercule Poirot. Meets Candide.

It's quite clear that Fry is a multi talent. Before reading the novel I didn't realize it was possible to esteem him more than I already did. This novel proved that it was.

5/5, and more Fry for me please!

Go have your moments somewhere else, we support Lily Serna over here  !! And David Astle

Here's the force and brilliance of Astle:

"How many anagrams can you make from your name?

ASTLE is anagram heaven, offering eleven whole words from SLATE to TALES, with LEATS (mill streams) and STELA (a pillar) among the rarities. My full name is almost VALIDATES, which proves I’m made for mixing."
