I've only read Mieville's The City & The City. I did enjoy it, and have a few more of his in the stack already. Perdido Street Station is one of them, along with Iron Council.

I will add the others to my wish list, sight unseen. Hey Pontalba I love your signiature quote. Very funny !

Review: The Whole Lesbian Sex Book by Felice Newman

First of all, this is NOT a porn book which is why I am not embarrassed to add it to my reading total.

So, basically I was looking for tips. That's my excuse anyway, and I'm sticking to it.

It did bang on an awful lot about masturbation. Which makes me think females do this a lot more than we give them credit for.

Oh, vodkafan, vodkafan... I believe you, but I still had to laugh at all your excuses for reading the book. I loved it how you started the review by instantly saying it's not porn and you're not embarrassed  The book does actually sound interesting, I might give it a go some time, for fun. Or for tips. Hold on, I don't need tips. Hm. Never mind :out:

Thanks Frankie I forgot to write also that the chapter on sexually transmitted infections scared the bejeesus out of me, but reading stuff like that always does; it made me want to never have sex with anybody ever again. Reading is much safer. Reading a scifi book called Future Freaks at the moment

^ Have you seen The Naked Gun movies with Leslie Nielsen and O. J. Simpson? Your thoughts on the STD chapter made me think of the huge full-body condom Mr Frank Drebin was using whilst intercoursing with Jane Spencer

Ah, good old Leslie Nielson. He was a funny guy. He will be sadly missed.

Review:

Future Freaks by Sheila Reading

I downloaded this for free on my kindle after reading a couple of reviews on Amazon. I was pleasantly surprised. This book is aimed at the YA market, I don't know anything about the author but I am guessing she is not too old herself, as there was a certain naivety about the motivations of most of the adult characters. It is set slightly in the future where cloning, and wifi internet hard wired into your brain are just a couple of the joys to come. Oh yes and every body is young and beautiful because any undesirable genes have been spliced out of the human race a generation back.

But hey, being a teenager is still not easy when you have people trying to kill you and you find out you don't even know who your parents are; and normal people don't have that person who you have been speaking to in your head since you were a baby.....

I enjoyed this book, it obviously started off as someone's teenage daydream, as the teenagers are always one step ahead of the adults although they get in plenty of danger along the way. The ending was a bit quick and left a major plotline unresolved however.

Review:

Perdido Street Station by China Mieville

I finally got around to reading this book that I had heard so much about on here. How to review this one without giving anything away? Well, if you like your sci-fi based on hard science fact then this book is not for you. But if you want to let your mind be taken on a walk among the what-ifs then this is a treat. You just have to suspend disbelief and go with it. This is an alternative universe where single shot flintlocks coexist with steam powered robots and punch card difference engines (computers). Not to mention all the various races (great, not an elf or a dwarf in sight!) and a sprinkling of magic.

I enjoyed it very much. It is a slow read I would say, there is a lot of description, which is not wasted because you do get the feel for this vast dirty city. I was from the first pages sucked into the story but I had no idea where it was going.

There was a fantastic bit half way through where the Mayor of the city looks into another dimension to consult with the representative of Hell to see if the Devil can help with the current emergency.

That just blew me away!! What was Mr Mieville smoking when he thought this up ?

Be sure you read the other two books aswell. I've read them inabout a week, just couldn't put them down. Very good reads!

Hi lopeanha I certainly will. I am curious as to where the story is going to go next. There was an extract of the second book at the back of the first but I did not read it.

I just finished The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I devoured it in two days, it was great.

I've got that one to read, I keep meaning to make a start on it but then I get tempted away by other books.

It was the same with me Kidsmum, I always knew I would have to read it but kept putting it off, but then my wife saw the film (without me) and bought me the book for Christmas. Now I will have to get the other two on my kindle, I was in WHSmith today to check on prices so I could compare..read a page of The Helpwhile I was there...

I started reading The Help last night but so far it is not grabbing me. But things have been busy last few days so maybe that's the reason.

will look forward to your comments as I've recently bought this book... hope it gets better!

For the first time EVER reading a book I woke up worrying about what was going to happen next. After only 3 hours sleep.

I finished The Help. I put my thought (not a review really) in the section on the Fiction part of the forum because I knew there would be a topic started. Don't seem any point repeating it here. It was great though.

I'm happy to hear you ended up enjoying The Help, I was so alarmed at your first comment on it not grabbing you. I've borrowed it from the library and will get to it one of these days.

BTW, did you say somewhere that you'd like to read Room by Emma Donoghue, or have I been imagining things?

So glad you enjoyed The Help & I agree with your comments on the other thread it is the sort of book that gets under your skin, my hubby loved it too & is now reading Bury The Chains The British Struggle to Abolish Slavery by Adam Hochschild which he says is fascinating stuff so I guess The Help got under his skin as well :)
