probooklover Posted July 28, 2009 Author Posted July 28, 2009 I haven't read any of those books Can you suggest any good ones? I enjoy crime/thriller books mostly. hmm - Sarah Water's book is a great haunted house novel. That could well be up your street. My fave of the bunch has to be 'Me Cheeta'. Tarzan's simian sidekick's autobiography. hilarious and brilliant. Quote

Fev Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Are all of those titles on general release already?? I'm sure I've never seen any of them in the shops...! If anything it must be a bad memory on my part; my being generally not very observant could not apply in this case, I simply spend too long in bookshops... Quote
Tikkititi Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 I haven't read any of them either, but I plan to read A S Byatt's and Sarah Water's soonish. hmm - Sarah Water's book is a great haunted house novel. Kell Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 I've not read any of them yet, but I have two of them (Wolf Hall and Brooklyn) on Mount TBR. I won them both in different online competitions. Quote

BookJumper Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Haven't read any of them and none really sound like my cuppa tea except Byatt's "The Children's Book" which is on my wishlist (has been for some time, I'm waiting for it to be paperbacked as the hardback is pretty and prohibitive). Quote
page turner Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 I've not read any but have picked up The children's book a few times so I might just go out and get it now. Quote
Adam Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 I have not read any of those yet, but I'm hearing good things about Brooklyn. Quote
Janet Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 I tried reserving The Children's Book by AS Byatt from the library last week but there are something like 54 reservations for one copy! Amazon have it for Quote
chesilbeach Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 I have not read any of those yet, but I'm hearing good things about Brooklyn. Me too. That and How To Paint A Dead Man are the only two I want to read on the list. Quote
Raven Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 I've not read any of them either, in fact I think I've only ever read one Booker nominated novel and that was the 2003 winner, Vernon God Little, by DBC Pierre. Quote
Janet Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 I can't find a list of nominations, but I've read two of the overall winners - In a Free State by V S Naipaul and The Sea by John Banville... and I hated both of them! Quote
Michelle Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 I can't find a list of nominations, They've been mentioned twice.. Janet Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 No - I've seen that. I was replying to Raven's post above mine - I meant nominations since the booker has been running to see if I've read any nominated books. Quote
Janet Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 (edited) Awww, don't look embarrassed - I didn't phrase it very well. I've looked on the Listmania thing on Amazon and discovered a couple more I've read and enjoyed, including The Secret River by Kate Grenville (although the ending could have been better) and What Was Lost by Catherine O'Flynn, which I thought was great! ETA: What Was Lost isn't mentioned. It might have been longlisted, perhaps? Edited July 29, 2009 by Janet Quote

There's a list of all previous winners and shortlisted books on Wikipedia here if you want to have a look Quote
Janet Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Oooh, thanks! I don't know why I didn't think of looking on Wiki! When I saw you posted it made me think that perhaps On Chesil Beach was nominated? </Goes to check> Quote
bethany725 Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Not only have I not read any of these, I haven't even heard of any of them.. I think I'm living under a rock. The Sarah Waters sounds interesting, at least. Back in India, I tried to read last year's winner "White Tiger," but didn't like it at all. Quote
