DanC_84 Posted March 29, 2009 Author Posted March 29, 2009 I had a massive reading day yesterday and finished The Time Traveler's Wife. I gave it 10/10. I just felt like I had no choice. It would have to be the most incredible book I have ever read. I was completely taken in by it and I loved every moment. I found it to be a complete rollercoaster of emotions. I find it hard after reading a book like that with such a high level of emotional involvement to decide what to read next, so I usually go for a lightist YA style book. This time I went for Candy by Kevin Brooks. I am actually nearly finished it as well, about 100 pages to go. It is fairly enjoyable, but it obviously suffers in being compared to the Time Traveler's Wife. Quote
Lucybird Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I'm glad you liked The Time Traveller's Wife, it's one of my favourites Quote
BookBee8 Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 I read Candy years ago and didn't think much too it. If I remember correctly, it was a bit unrealistic. Good to hear that you enjoyed The Time Traveller's Wife . I didn't have quite the same reaction; I gave it 8/10 as it didn't amaze me like it has others. It is a fantastic read though. I'm reading a YA book at the moment too and I'm not impressed at all. Can't wait to finish it! Quote

The vast majority are just something to take my mind off life. I find most of them to be 6 or 7 out of 10 type books. Some are exceptional obviously, but for the most part I just use them when I need something light to read that I know I will not get too emotionally involved in. Quote
Janet Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 I loved The Time Traveler's Wife too - I read it in 2005, which is when my reading tastes started to change and thought it was brilliant. I see she has a new one coming out in October (in hardback) - called Her Fearful Symmetry which has taken some time! I guess TTTW was a hard one to follow?! Synopsis - from Amazon Dearest e, I told you I would let you know - so here it is - goodbye. I try to imagine what it would feel like if it was you - but it's impossible to conjure the world without you, even though we've been apart so long. I didn't leave you anything. You got to live my life. That's enough. Instead I'm experimenting - I've left the whole lot to the twins. I hope they'll enjoy it. Don't worry, it will be okay. Say goodbye to Jack for me - Love. Despite everything, e Julia and Valentina Poole are normal American teenagers - normal, at least, for identical 'mirror' twins who have no interest in college or jobs or possibly anything outside their cozy suburban home. But everything changes when they receive notice that an aunt whom they didn't know existed has died and left them her flat in an apartment block overlooking Highgate Cemetery in London. They feel that at last their own lives can begin ...but have no idea that they've been summoned into a tangle of fraying lives, from the obsessive-compulsive crossword setter who lives above them to their aunt's mysterious and elusive lover who lives below them, and even to their aunt herself, who never got over her estrangement from the twins' mother - and who can't even seem to quite leave her flat. With Highgate Cemetery itself a character and echoes of Henry James and Charles Dickens, "Her Fearful Symmetry" is a delicious and deadly twenty-first-century ghost story about Niffenegger's familiar themes of love, loss and identity. It is certain to cement her standing as one of the most singular and remarkable novelists of our time. Sounds interesting. Quote
Lucybird Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 That sounds good, not sure if it will meet up to The Time Traveller's Wife though Quote
lexiepiper Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 I'm curious enough to buy it, I love TTW, and so if it's written as well as that it'll be worth it Quote
DanC_84 Posted March 30, 2009 Author Posted March 30, 2009 Finished Candy by Kevin Brooks. Now reading another Nora Roberts book from her JD Robb 'In Death' series - Immortal in Death. Quote
DanC_84 Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 I finished 'Immortal in Death' last night. The third book in Nora Roberts' (writing as JD Robb) 'In Death' series. I gave it 8/10. As much as these books are definately very samish I just really enjoy them. I nearly found this one as enjoyable to read as the first in the series, as demonstrated by the fact that I finished it within one day. I really love the dynamic that Roberts creates between the two main characters, it makes it a really enjoyable read for me. I have the fourth book in the series on my TBR list, but I think I will wait a while before coming back to it. There are a few others I want to read first anyway. Next up for me is the third book in Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse vampire series - 'Club Dead'. After this I am going to read The Book Thief, which I am really looking forward to. Quote
Michelle Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I read tons of the In Death books a while back, many in succession, and it was quite a while before the sameness compelled me to stop reading. Saying that however, I do intend to eventually catch up on the few I think I've missed. Quote

Saying that however, I do intend to eventually catch up on the few I think I've missed. Oh yeah, I think it will still be a fair while before I stop. I think it might be beneficial for me to leave a gap between reading them though. It just seems a little fresher when I start each book. She is a great author IMO. Quote
DanC_84 Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 I finished Club Dead by Charlaine Harris last night. Little disappointing in the end. I enjoyed the first half but it fell away a fair bit in the second I thought. Next up is The Book Thief, which I am pretty excited about. Quote
bethany725 Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Yey, Dan! You're reading The Book Thief next!! So excited for you.. really hope you enjoy. I'll keep checking to see how you're doing with it. Quote

DanC_84 Posted April 8, 2009 Author Posted April 8, 2009 I finished The Book Thief this morning. I rated it at 9/10, I thought it was fantastic. I think that this was a book that I would usually struggle to get into actually, however my existing interest in life in Nazi Germany and the exceptional writing style and portrayal of characters by Zusak made the difference. I loved the book from start to finish. I would not term it as exceptionally addictive yet I read it at every opportunity I had, which I think speaks volumes for the quality of the book. Next up I am going to get back on the 'In Death' horse and read the fourth in the series - 'Rapture in Death'. Quote
bethany725 Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 So glad you enjoyed "The Book Thief".. I was curious as to how you'd like it. Quote
BookBee8 Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Glad you enjoyed The Book Thief . I gave it 8/10 in the end, but still thought it was a pretty great book! Quote
SaraPepparkaka Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 It's easy to be disappointed if you have high expectations for a book. Glad that didn't happen to you! Quote
DanC_84 Posted April 14, 2009 Author Posted April 14, 2009 I went up the coast for the Easter holidays. I finished two books up there - Lovely Bones and Rapture in Death and I have just started Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris. Quote
DanC_84 Posted April 14, 2009 Author Posted April 14, 2009 It's easy to be disappointed if you have high expectations for a book. Glad that didn't happen to you! Funnily enough I think this might have happened with The Lovely Bones. I was expecting a great deal and whilst I did enjoy it, I just don't think I established as significant a connection with the characters as I have in other books I have read this year. Quote
DanC_84 Posted April 16, 2009 Author Posted April 16, 2009 Finished 'Dead to the World'. Next I am going to read Vampire Beach: Bloodlust by Alex Duval before tackling The Tea Rose. Quote
BookBee8 Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 Ooh, I'll be interested to hear what you think to the Vampire Beach book, I was thinking about reading those myself. Quote
DanC_84 Posted April 16, 2009 Author Posted April 16, 2009 Ooh, I'll be interested to hear what you think to the Vampire Beach book, I was thinking about reading those myself. Yeah, people on here have been talking about it positively of late so that was one of the reasons I have chosen it as my next one. Quote
DanC_84 Posted April 19, 2009 Author Posted April 19, 2009 Finished Vampire Beach: Bloodlust on the weekend and read the first 50 pages of The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly. Quote
DanC_84 Posted April 26, 2009 Author Posted April 26, 2009 I finished 'The Tea Rose' by Jennifer Donnelly this morning. As pathetic as it is I actually forced myself to get up early in order to finish it. I just couldn't face another day without finishing it. I rated that book 10/10. I loved it. Definately one of my top couple of favourites for the year. The story is just so well told. It is almost 700 pages but there is barely a lull in the entire book. The characters and excellent. I was caught up in the story from the first few chapters and it just got better and better. I will definately endeavour to read more Jennifer Donnelly books in the future. Next up for me is a YA book that has been sitting on my pile for a while - 'Blood and Chocolate' by Annette Klause. Quote
