lexiepiper Posted January 27, 2010 Author Posted January 27, 2010 That lovely Kell Where did you get the perforated paper? Quote
Kell Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 (edited) I bought it online from Sew and So. You get 2 x 9"x12"sheets for Edited January 28, 2010 by Kell Quote
lexiepiper Posted January 28, 2010 Author Posted January 28, 2010 Thanks I like the swirly and star paper, they're very pretty! Quote
Kell Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 Its surprisingly easy to work with too - difficult with metallic or rayon threads, simply because they fray more easily and catch on the edges a lot. You can use them, but it's harder work. Also, you need to make sure your hands are completely dry at all times. I used perforated paper for a few of my Xmas card designs last year: THe gold card is stitched in rayon floss which was tricky, but worth it for the overall finish, which was lovely. Another advantage of perforated paper is that the edges don't fray so you can cut it to different shapes very easily. Quote
Inver Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 Kell your cards look really effective. Must be quick to stitch on the paper stuff. Bit like beginners with the large holes and can see what you are doing... think I need some of that these days.... Quote
Kell Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 It is very easy to stitch on, and I love using it for little projects. Quote
Kell Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 (edited) I'm slowly starting to kit-up for a small project that has loads of colours - it's a bookmark that has over 60 colours in it! It's call the Butterflies Galore Storykeep from Heaven and Earth Designs. The moment I saw it, I fell in love with it. I've been perusing that site for a while and was in awe of the gorgeous designs, all of which use only full stitches (i.e. no fractionals) and are all (I think) total coverage designs (i.e. you don't leave any cloth unstitched). I thought a bookmark would be the perfect introduction to their charts, even though a 50x250 stitches piece has more than 60 colour changes in it. And did I mention there are more than 60 colours in it?! Many of the charts have 90 colours! I also have something called a "Peek-a-boo", which is part of a chart taken from a larger one that shows part of a face with one eye as the focal point. I chose At First Sight, but there are others from that collection I love too, so I may well end up with more of those to do in the future! Anyway, I'm kitting up Butterflies Galore and I already had half a dozen of the colours I'll need, so I bought another half a dozen in the colours that are used most on the first page, so I can make a start on it next month. Of course, I'll have to pick up the other colours too, but I can do it a few at a time to save the expense of getting all of them at once! And I bought a piece of 22-count hardanger fabric yesterday, as I'm determined to give that a try this year. I'll probably try a biscornu in it, as I have some beautiful small hardanger designs that would be perfect... And this week I'm stitching a Xmas card design on purple evenweave, a valentine design on blue evenweave and a birthday card design on perforated paper. I'll be making them all up into cards at the end of the month. Edited January 29, 2010 by Kell Quote
Kell Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 I'm getting involved in a band sampler stitch-along, where all the members are designing various rows for one long sampler that we'll all stitch, with the rows in any order we like. The bands I've designed so far are: Quote
Kate Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 I'm now stitching a new one. It is a present for my Mum: http://www.janndesigns.co.uk/JDdesignDetails.asp?ID=753 Quote
Inver Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Good stuff girls Kate ~ looks like a big project! Kell ~ I love all your red coloured bands. Going to be a lovely sampler Quote
Kell Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 I finished a birthday card for my friend whose birthday is at the end of February. She loves cross stitched things, so I figured she'd appreciate this. It's four of the 9 sections from Flower Power by Maria Diaz, which was in a booklet that came free on Cross Stitcher magazine a while back. It's the Assissi section. I used a bunch of Red Heart flosses and a few other random flosses I got free on another magazine. I then used some pretty paper to back the perforated paper and stuck it, along with a card flower I had in my card making supplies, and popped it on a bright pink metallic card I got free on another magazine. I hope she likes it! Quote
Kell Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 My first attempt at designing a blackwork biscornu on a cross stitch programme. The centre is purposely left sparse fo that little of the design is covered by the central button. Now for the permissions bit: - This design is copyright to Kell Smurthwaite. - You may use, copy and/or share this design, and you may change it to your liking for your own use. You may not sell this design in any form or use it to make up kits. - You may sell the finished piece for charity, but you may not sell it commercially. Quote
Kate Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 I like the card you made Kell. You are really talented Quote
Kell Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Thanks, Kate. lexiepiper Posted January 31, 2010 Author Posted January 31, 2010 They're looking great Kell Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the program on your blog, I had designed my bookmark design on graph paper, but now have transferred it over to the program and it looks much better and will be easier to stitch too Quote
Kell Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 It's a nice, simple programme, isn't it? I can't get all the things to work that should (such as rotating a section or inverting it), but it's fun to play around with. So much so that I've created a new blog to showcase my designs as I create them. I've called it Kincavel Krosses because my Mam bought me a title for Xmas a few years ago and I'm technically Lady Kell of Kincavel. I suppose the image of a Lady sitting with her stitching is quite a classic one, so I think it works well. Speaking of which, I've done another blackwork design which I've called Kincavel Krosses because it's in a cross shape with cross motifs throughout. Instead of posting the pic here, you can click on the Kincavel Krosses link in my sig if you fancy a look. Quote

I saw it when you posted the second one on facebook and I had a nosey around your blog, it looks great, particularly love the header and it's a great idea to keep all your designs in one place Quote
Kell Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Thank you. There are only 3 designs up so far, but I plan to do many more. I get so much pleasure frombrowsing free designs that I might be able to use, so I love the idea that perhaps someone will get the same enjoyment from some of my own designs. Quote
Kell Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Seems like I'm stithcing loads of projects at the same time right now. I'm taking part in an exchange at the Cross Stitch Forum where we're all stitching an egg to a set outline template. So, I designed a balckwork one and started stitching it this morning while Xan had a nap. I'm stitching it in a variegated thread that is golds and browns, so it will hopefully look like a golden egg. I've attached the design below. Quote
Kell Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Another couple of blackwork designs. The owl was a request from someone on a stitchy forum who wanted a small owl motif for a bookmark she's stitching for a friend who loves those hooty birds. Quote
Kell Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Feel free. If you send me a photo when you're done, I'll add it to my blog as the stitched model. Quote
Kate Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Aw cool! As we can't hang pictures in the new flat I'm thinking of making little pictures to hang from the door handles to liven the place up a bit. We bought this last night for my father-in-law's birthday. It isn't until June but I feel it's going to take a long time to make: http://www.sewandso.co.uk/cgi-bin/find/db.cgi?db=zoom&do=search_results&Prod_Code=30036&ww=1 Quote
