I missed this yesterday but watched on BBC3 earlier.

I thought Matt Smith was really good. There are definitely shades of Ten's personality/delivery there, but that just helped continuity as far as I'm concerned. I'm hugely looking forward to next week.

I loved young Amelia and thought the young actress completely out-acted Karen, but hopefully she'll improve as things go along.

I finally watched it on BBc iplayer :D I enjoyed it, as mentioned before, the music was loud during some scenes that I could not make out what they were saying.

I thought the wee girl who played young Amelia was fantastic :)

Matt Smith is still quite not the Doctor for me but I do like him ;)

I'm really puzzled by the music sound levels issue.

I've seen this reported on several site since Saturday, and it is an issue that has come up in the past, but it's not one I've ever encountered.

I'm beginning to wonder if I get better sound on my old SONY Trinitron CRT TV than people are getting get on their sfiddley new flat screen jobs! (assuming that is what people are using!).

I agree, Raven. People have been mentioning this on another forum too, but I can't say I even really noticed the incidental music.

I loved Matt Smith's Doctor. He has shades of number 10, which helps with continuity. I thought young Amelia was utterly brilliant but am yet to be convinced by older Amy - she seemed a bit wooden to me.

All in all a good start thought. :)

I'm liking the new Dr Who. Sad David Tennant is gone but there is a real freshness to this show. Not just because of new Doctor and Assistant either! I like the shows new and fresh direction. From the previews I think the budget is bigger!

The doctor feels like a cross between Jack Sparrow and David Tennant :). I hope the show keeps its pulply fiction style :D some of my fav episodes of past Dr. Who were stand alone stories

We watched the repeat on BBC3 on Sunday night and was quite pleasantly surprised. I wasn't convinced I was going to like Matt as The Doctor, but he put in a good performance that I think deserves credit - he was far more likeable than I thought he'd be and his odd looks were half forgotten as I got involved in the plot (I still think he looks like Eric Stoltz in Mask though!).

I DO NOT like the new theme tune AT ALL. However, I DO like the new TARDIS - the central control column almost looks like a giant jellyfish and I like that slightly more "organic" feel to it - after all, the TARDIS does have a living core and I've always thought that should be reflected in the design - they finally did it!

I liked how we were introduced to the new Assistant too.Having The Doctor become involved in her childhood set the tone for him being someone she feels she can trust and rely on, therefore they already have a good, strong bond and a solid basis to develop their relationship. The story was very predictable, but the writing, direction and performances were good and went a long way towards making up for that.

I'll be watching the next few episodes with interest to see how things progress... :)

One thing I'll be hoping for though - ditch the bowtie - it's hideous - not a good look at all!

PS I still miss Chris Eccleston - he was a great "new" Doctor for the regeneration of the series and so far he's still been the best of the new Doctors (all credit to DT - he took a while to grow on me, but in the end he did just that, but CE was fantastic!).

I think that's petty much universal - where has the base line gone?!

The organic coral of the last design wasn't enough for you then?! :)

No! Keep the bow-tie, it makes him extra Doctory!

On a more general note . . .

I think for those who weren't convinced by Karen Gillan, watch this week's episode as I think it's going to be Amy heavy (where the first episode focused more on the new Doctor).

I've never watched Dr. Who before, but a friend convinced me to start watching it now since it's a pretty fresh start, and I have to admit I absolutely loved it! Exactly my sort of humor. "Nothing says 'non-terrestrial' like a sonic screwdriver!" :)

I quite liked Matt by the end of the episode despite the fact they he really annoyed me for the first 20 minutes or so. It was like he was trying too hard to be eccentric with the fish fingers and custard etc.I am not too keen on Amy Pond, they didn't really seem to gel well, but I guess this will get better as the series moves on. The child Amy was much more likable that the adult Amy. The new theme tune? I think that this has been covered enough in previous posts and I hate it too!!

I absolutely adored Matt from start to finish. And I think he's hot and the dickie bow is awesome. Then again, I'm rather nutty myself :)

It was getting there, but this is less industrial-looking. :motz:

I got to re-watch the episode in HD with 5.1 surround sound and the issues with the overpowering incidental music did not apply. Even the new theme sounded good. I was wondering if it's a case of the BBC not getting the stereo mix right but obviously your tv disproves that theory!

In episode 2 we'll truly get to see Matt Smith's take on the Doctor...coming out of regeneration the new Doctor always channels the last Doctor i.e. "I'm still cooking!" One of the big criticisms is that Matt Smith's Doctor is too much like David Tennant, so I'll be interested in hearing what they think of Matt after a few more eps!

Can't wait to see more of the TARDIS...it's so big that an episode could take place there. If I'm not mistaken, the old Dr. Who shows had some TARDIS eps?

There is only one story set solely in the TARDIS, and that was the Hartnell's third story Edge of Destruction, waaaaay back in '64.

There are also odd episodes where they spend quite a bit of time in the TARDIS (the Tom Baker story Invasion of Time being main one I can think of).

It could be interesting to see a story set solely in the TARDIS again, but I'm not sure it's something they would want to try.

I don't know if I'm having the same discussion about the incidental music, but I don't care whether it's loud or quiet, the score itself is too obvious and manipulative in my opinion. I've watched it in HD with surround sound as well, and I still feel the music is intrusive. A score should enhance the atmosphere, emotions and actions, but in my opinion, Murray Gold simply overpowers everything.

I've watched the episode a couple of times now, and I think it was a good, solid episode for a new Doctor. Not only did we have a new Doctor, we also had a new companion to introduce as well as their background and surroundings. This means a domestic style of episode, set on Earth, action without too much peril, and the opportunity for some good humorous scenes. Overall, I think they got the balance right.

Yep, same discussion and, in general, I totally agree with you. When I watched it on my tv I found the music ridiculously loud and intrusive (as I did with all the specials last year). My mate's obviously got his system set-up in some peculiar way, cos I definitely didn't find it anywhere near as bad when we watched it again. I actually thought some (only some!) of the music was quite good - which can't be right, surely!

By and large I like Murray Gold's music; he has written some very good themes for the show which - in my opinion - have usually enhanced stories rather than detracted from them.

The music for The Girl in the Fireplace, for example, is beautiful in my book, especially the piece that plays out at the end of the episode.

There have been moments of music I loved (particularly the choral pieces), so he's not all bad, but I've found it's got more annoying as the series have gone on. It was definitely better in the first couple of series, but certainly the big epic season finales of RTD included some awful, irritating, and unnecessary incidental music.

^ But remember, the music choices made are still down to the Directors; they don't have to include music if they don't want to and they are ultimeatly responsible for the levels in the mix as well.
