Off topic: John Ronald Reuel (Tolkien) would have been 133 years old today. Probably the greatest "fantasy" writer of all time.

I’m trying to decide whether to carry on with Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. I started it about 3 weeks ago but I’m finding it a real slog. I’ve made it to page 100 and I normally drop a book by this point if I’m not enjoying it.

I read 400 of the 600 pages when it came out and abandoned it. I have another copy and will try again but I couldn’t make heads nor tales of it

I loved Wolf Hall, I was so absorbed that I didn't notice some of the things that annoy other readers but if you aren't enjoying it then give it up. Life's too short and there are too many other fabulous books out there to read a book you aren't getting on with.

I might give it another 100 pages and if I'm not feeling it at that point I will put it aside for the moment.

I decided to put Wolf Hall aside for a while. I'm about to start the first book in the Vera series, The Crow Trap by Ann Cleeves.

Time for my annual read of Poldark. This year it’s The Living Cup, Poldark 10 (of 12, nearly done!)

I love these books, apart from number 8 which was a bit zzz.  The Loving Cup was great, I still have the last book to read.

I’m also having the deep pleasure of reading a paper book. I’m going to miss them, but maybe I’ll just start the series again

Love the Poldark series, too. Have read them all at least three times. The tv series was great, the original one is my favourite, although the later one was very well done too.

Finished two books rapidly one after the other, or should I say 'finished with' as one of them was a non-completer.  Read West of Rehoboth by Alexs D Pate for my Tour of the United States (Delaware).  A bit of a curate's egg, but an engaging read, 4 stars.  Also Never Let Me Go, the Booker short-listed novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, for a book group.  Drearily dull and tedious, managed just under half in total, not impressed.  2 stars at a pinch.

I'll confess to being one of those who don't get on with Ishiguro, even The Remains of the Day which I read when it first came out which I remember as being fine but nothing like as impressive as everyone else  seemed to think.
