Michelle Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 The 2008 list has been announced, and some look quite interesting. Does anyone know any more about them? Blood River by Tim Butcher A Quiet Belief In Angels by RJ Ellory Then We Came To The End by Joshua Ferris Notes From An Exhibition by Patrick Gale The Welsh Girl by Peter Ho Davies A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones The Rose of Sebastopol by Katharine McMahon Random Acts of Heroic Love by Danny Scheinmann Visible World by Mark Slouka Quote
angerball Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 Not heard of any of them, except for A Thousand Splendid Suns. A Quiet Belief in Angels has gotten all 5 star reviews, though I can't see the synopsis. I like the sound of Notes from an Exhibition, Blood River and Mister Pip. A lot of them seem to have a war theme. Quote
JudyB Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 Funnily enough today I tried to find this list on the internet for a reader that came into the library. I could only come up with the Summer Read (which she was happy with) but when I went for my break later I picked up a copy of The Bookseller and guess what was in there. I can personally recommend A Thousand Splendid Suns - this is on permanent reservation at the library along with The Kite Runner. Mister Pip is on my 'to read' list from this year and will probably be one of the first I read in 2008 - I had a thought today that if it is on Richard and Judy's list then it may appear in Tescos for Quote
Michelle Posted December 29, 2007 Author Posted December 29, 2007 Notes From An Exhibition and Mr Pip caught my attention. Quote
JudyB Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 I feel quite impatient to read it - I picked up a copy in Waterstones to look at and read the first paragraph to see if I liked the style - I did and will be reading it soon. Quote
Janet Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 I already had A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini and The Welsh Girl by Peter Ho Davies on my Amazon wishlist. I don't know much about the others. Quote
Karen1 Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 So these are the Book Club selections right, any word on the Summer Read or is it a while before they get announced? Quote
Deirdre Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 On the Dutch bookforum where I also post there was a group read for Random Acts of Heroic Love by Danny Scheinman. I didn't read it myself, but most readers were enthusiastic about this book. The comparison to Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier, maybe known to some of you, was made very often. Quote
happyanddandy Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 I had a good browse in Waterstone's where there is a whole display given over to R and J's 2008 collection. I bought 'Mr Pip' in the buy 3 for 2 offer. Quote
Janet Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 I LOVED Mr Pip I picked it up yesterday in WHS but I wasn't sure whether one needs to have read Great Expectations or to at least know the story, to fully appreciate it? Quote
Roland Butter Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 The Welsh Girl is a book I've been meaning to read for some time. Quote
Kell Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 There are only two on the list that really grab my fancy: A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones It's the same with all the R&J book club selections for me - they only ever select a couple that appeal to me in any way. I read Cold Mountain last year, but have not read the other book. What is the comparison about? Quote
JudyB Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 The Welsh Girl is a book I've been meaning to read for some time. Yes I think I might pick that up at the same time as Mister Pip. Quote
Louiseog Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 I picked it up yesterday in WHS but I wasn't sure whether one needs to have read Great Expectations or to at least know the story, to fully appreciate it? I haven't read it although do know the story think I may have listened to it a long time ago Quote
