It's 28 °C in the house here too! Outside it's warmer, they predict 36 °C today, and 41 °C in one of the next few days (I forgot if it was tomorrow or Saturday). Poor cat :(.

Oof, how awful for all your animals.  :console:

It`s now down to 21C but it`s 85% humidity, so it really doesn`t feel much better. Hopefully the predicted thunderstorms will help tonight.

Yes, they are pretty hot :(. Hopefully it will cool down a bit soon, for all the animals. I heard thunder yesterday but I don't think it rained (at least, not that I heard, before I fell asleep, it might have rained after I fell asleep).

It`s around 24C now and we`ve got more warnings of rain overnight; fingers crossed that Holland cools down soon.

I downloaded a couple of books : Bruno, Chief of Police - Martin Walker ( UK 99p atm, US $1.56 ) - I`ve seen good things about this series, set in a small town in  SW France.

Also, A Murder of Quality - John Le Carre ( free atm in the UK  ) - I`ve already read it, and I think it`s my favourite Le Carre - but it`s nice to get a digital copy.

Thanks! It cooled down a bit overnight and slightly yesterday during the day, but today it'll be even hotter or so they predict. Later today though there may be thunderstorms and rain and then it should cool down in the next few days (although for some areas they predict it'll be a lot colder!).

Cold enough to wear a jumper today  :o  - the cat has been able to sleep on my bed for the past couple of nights ( previously, she was sleeping dowmstairs in the sitting room on her ottoman, where it was cooler ).

The credit card statement came today - 3 supermarket charges, 1 magazine renewal ( Oprah ) , 1 pre-paid prescription thingy, and 24 charges for books. Oopsies.   :giggle:

These two cats usually stay downstairs, but Goldy comes up early in the morning, just so we don't forget to feed them first thing. :D

Yes.  Oopsies, indeed! :P

Hot as blue blazes here, still.  Rain is letting up and that just encourages the heat.  /sigh/

Quick plug for these free Wizard of Oz books  ; I remember loving the series when I was maybe 7 ( the library had the full set, brilliant ! )

I've got an omnibus with all of them, but I haven't read it yet. Great to hear you like them :)!

Xiao-Xiao used to wake me up by sitting on the windowsill and playing with the windchimes. Then she realised that shredding the back of the curtain was even more effective.

Just looked up your weather - 33C ! Your poor cats. Do they lose weight in the heat ?

Yes.  Oopsies, indeed!  :P

I`ve realised that I have a huge amount of excuses for book buying. The favourite one is ` there`s only one book left ! I must buy it now, `cos it`ll never, ever be available again anywhere !! ` :giggle2:

Oh, she is beautiful!

No weight lose, these cats don't go outside. :)  It's so wooded around here with critters roaming about.  I haven't let any cats out since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  They don't seem to mind, they lounge about a lot!

Check out The Millions thread I started, you might get some more preorder ideas......../evil grin/

#109   The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party - Alexander McCall Smith

Book 12 in the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency series, set in Botswana. At this stage, it`s not about the mysteries as much as the ongoing adventures of Mma Makutsi (  and her shoe trouble, plus ongoing saga with her nemesis Violet ), Mma Ramotswe ( and her van trouble ) and Charlie the apprentice mechanic ( and his women troubles ).  It`s a lovely, gentle, slow-paced read ( quotes here ) and very funny.

I think like that often too! :giggle2: Like, this is a unique opportunity, it won't ever come back again.. (which is true sometimes).

Supposed to be warmer again by Friday ; it looks cooler in Holland now too.

It is :)!

Here`s a pic of Xiao-Xiao from around Easter - it`s two years today that she became a furry family member.  :D

Wow, she is so beautiful :)

#110   Fer-De-Lance - Rex Stout

I`ve read a few Nero Wolfe books and liked them, but this is the first in the series ( written in 1935 ) and the first I`ve been ` meh` about. There`s a whiff of racism which colours the whole read for me. Looking past that, Nero Wolfe ( rotund, orchid lover and New York`s finest private detective, living in a brownstone with his own chef and own orchid gardener ) and Archie Goodwin ( Nero`s aide and side-kick ) are on the case. An Italian woman comes to see them, asking them to find her missing brother. Nero links her case to the sudden death of a college professor, and we`re off on a witty caper.

#111   Strange Weather in Tokyo - Hiromi Kawakami

Also called The Briefcase in the US.

Excerpt.

Tsukiko - a self-contained office worker in her late 30`s - meets one of her old school teachers in a bar, who she refers to as Sensei. They occasionally run into one

another and slowly a friendship develops.  Tsukiko , who usually prefers to be alone rather than with someone who doesn`t completely `get` her, gradually thinks she`s developed deeper feelings for this man thirty years her senior. The pair spend time together - going on a trip to a remote island, a mushroom hunting trip and a cherry blossom viewing party - and slowly you realise that there`s a deep connection between two distinctive people.

It`s a slightly whimsical tale - there`s a bit of magical realism thrown in - and there are descriptions of local food and nature woven into the story which engender a sense of peace, despite the novel being set in a hugely busy city.

It`s a gentle read which takes you along with it, and left me wanting to read more from this author.

#112   A Meditiation on Murder - Robert Thorogood

Excerpt

Based on the Death in Paradise TV show, this has Detective Inspector Richard Poole, Detective Sergeant Camille and the rest of the team solving a variation on a locked room mystery, on the fictional island  of Saint Marie in the Caribbean.

The downside : It reads like a novelisation of a TV episode.

The upside :  It reads like a novelisation of a TV episode. Hurray ! If you like the show, it`s like getting another episode with the Richard Poole character, set about one year after he arrived on Saint Marie.

A guru at a Spa is murdered inside a locked Japanese meditation lodge, which can only be opened from the inside. One of the spa guests inside the lodge must`ve done it, but which one ? It`s a twisty-turny complicated whodunnit/howdunnit with uptight Richard and eye-rolling Camille. All the usual characters appear too, including Camille`s Mum and Harry the Lizard.

Unfortunately, I`m not sure how accessible the novel is to people who haven`t already seen the TV show ; I could hear the characters voices in my head whilst I was reading and picture them, so I didn`t need to read indepth characterisation, plus I was familiar with the use of the White Board of Clues ( which pops up a few times in the book as a way of recapping the plot, and maybe seems a bit odd to newbies ). I`ll happily read the next one in the series when it comes out, but I`m not sure that this book will appeal to anyone who isn`t already a fan.

#113   Hula Done It ? - Maddy Hunter

Excerpt

Book 4 in the Passport to Peril series, and a return to form after book 3, which was all a bit meh. This time, Emily is escorting her tour group of Seniors from Iowa on a Hawaiian cruise, taking in some of the places which Captain Cook visited. Along for the holiday are the delightful Nana, grumpy Berenice, clever Tilly and other loveable characters from previous books. Emily and Nana attend a lecture from a Captain Cook aficianado, who promptly gets killed. Emily and the Seniors investigate and we`re off on another romp. There`s a treasure hunt , a Halloween costume party and Emily has boyfriend trouble. Again. Pure entertainment.   :giggle2:
