emelee
So now the nomination process is over, and we have our nominees. This is how you vote in round 2:Two authors go head-to-head against each other. You decide which one of the two that wins. You do so by copying the list below, and either mark your winner with bold text & leave your loser in normal text so it is clear who you are voting for. If you cannot vote in one battle for any reason (because you like both, or because both are new to you etc), just skip that battle and move on to the once that you can vote in. The list below was done by lottery. No author has been given privaledges, And as there were an uneven number of authors nominated, one battle is between 3 authors. Mark only one winner. Round 2 ends April 20th Start voting now! (Copy the list and mark your winners) Margaret Atwood --vs-- George Orwell --vs-- Daphne Du Maurier Vladimir Nabokov --vs-- John Banville Samantha Hayes --vs-- Stephen King Edward Rutherford --vs-- L.E. willoyd
My votes: Margaret Atwood --vs-- George Orwell --vs-- Daphne Du Maurier Vladimir Nabokov --vs-- John Banville Samantha Hayes --vs-- Stephen King Edward Rutherford --vs-- L.E. Modesitt Sophie McKenzie --vs-- Leo Tolstoy Peter F Hamilton --vs-- Chris Manby Franz Kafka --vs-- Bernard Cornwell Hilary Mantel --vs-- Terry Pratchett Charles Dickens --vs-- Salman Rushdie Robert Jordan --vs-- Edgar Allan Poe Donna Leon --vs-- Paul Auster Elizabeth George --vs-- E M Forster Tash Aw --vs-- Oscar Wilde Maggie O'Farrell --vs-- George Eliot Virginia Woolf --vs-- JRR Tolkien Fyodor Dostoyevsky --vs-- Edith Wharton Conn Iggulden --vs-- Jane Austen Neil Gaiman --vs-- Sophie Kinsella Gabriel Garcia Márquez --vs-- William Faulkner Paulo Coelho --vs-- Rebecca Gable I'm surprised at myself as to how many I can't decide on. Just one (Marquez vs Faulkner) is because I think they're both equally good, most of the others because I don't really rate either, or don't rate one and don't know the other! I'm sad to see one of Dostoyevsky or Wharton go out in the first round, and one or two others who I see as seriously good but will struggle up against more popular writers, but that's the nature of a knock out like this (unless you are the FA, who seed the big hitters to only come in later on!). I love both Rushdie and Tolkien (both have books on my all-time favourites list), but they are both up against two of the greatest (IMO) writers in the English language who, for me (but perhaps not for others!), should be serious finalist contenders; for me Tolkien is a bit of a one-book wonder, whilst Woolf transformed the literary landscape (this is about 'greatest' authors, not who wrote our favourite books). Intriguing idea emelee, as long as, as you say, it doesn't descend into a popularity contest. (I'd find it even more intriguing if you ran the competition through to a straight head to head, rather than a poll of "about 6"!). bingleygirl
As my first love are the Victorian classics, quite a few of these were very straightforward. Ben
Just want to say, as I missed the initial nomination thread, that this is a great idea for a game. I feel like you should extend this a bit, see if more people get involved so you can get a much wider range of votes... and to give Rushdie a remote chance against Dickens. Here's my list (missed out the one's I didn't feel knowledgeable voting on): Margaret Atwood --vs-- George Orwell --vs-- Daphne Du Maurier (Honourable mention to Daphne, who doesn't deserve such an early exit). Vladimir Nabokov --vs-- John Banville Samantha Hayes --vs-- Stephen King Sophie McKenzie --vs-- Leo Tolstoy Franz Kafka --vs-- Bernard Cornwell Hilary Mantel --vs-- Terry Pratchett Charles Dickens --vs-- Salman Rushdie (Sorry, Dickens, but Rushdie's my favourite writer of all time. This is one hell of a battle though. I feel like it's the hardest match-up of the lot, and I think both deserve to go further than the first round. Although it does look like Rushdie's ran his race). Robert Jordan --vs-- Edgar Allan Poe Elizabeth George --vs-- E M Forster Tash Aw --vs-- Oscar Wilde Virginia Woolf --vs-- JRR Tolkien (This is tricky and again I think both deserve further rounds. I think both are excellent writers, but because of their differing styles it makes it a difficult choice - for me at least). Fyodor Dostoyevsky --vs-- Edith Wharton Conn Iggulden --vs-- Jane Austen Neil Gaiman --vs-- Sophie Kinsella Gabriel Garcia Márquez --vs-- William Faulkner Paulo Coelho --vs-- Rebecca Gable Edited April 17, 2014 by Ben

Ben
If there's no consensus on one of the other head-to-head's can we have Rushdie through as a lucky loser? Only kidding... Edited April 18, 2014 by Ben
emelee
Well I have thought about what happens in such cases, but I have not yet decided what the best thing would be. It will depend on number of votes. If one battle ends 1-1, and another 5-4, then the fair thing would be to let both authors with only 1 vote each be eliminated and as you said, lucky loser. As 4 votes are clearly better than 1 vote. And especially if there is a battle that ends 0-0. But there is a chance that more than 20 authors will pass for round 3. Or if there's a tie with two battles that both end 1-1, I will let you guys decide in a poll which one of them will go to next round. But it all depends on the result, when I see it before me in numbers, and what will feel to be most fair thing to do.
emelee
And we're set for round 3. No ties in round 2. The results are: Margaret Atwood --vs-- George Orwell --vs-- Daphne Du Maurier 3-5-4 Vladimir Nabokov --vs-- John Banville 5-3 Samantha Hayes --vs-- Stephen King 3-7 Edward Rutherford --vs-- L.E. Modesitt 4-1 Sophie McKenzie --vs-- Leo Tolstoy 1-9 Peter F Hamilton --vs-- Chris Manby 3-0 Franz Kafka --vs-- Bernard Cornwell 6-3 Hilary Mantel --vs-- Terry Pratchett 3-7 Charles Dickens --vs-- Salman Rushdie 7-2 Robert Jordan --vs-- Edgar Allan Poe 2-7 Donna Leon --vs-- Paul Auster 5-3 Elizabeth George --vs-- E M Forster 4-7 Tash Aw --vs-- Oscar Wilde 1-8 Maggie O'Farrell --vs-- George Eliot 3-5 Virginia Woolf --vs-- JRR Tolkien 4-6 Fyodor Dostoyevsky --vs-- Edith Wharton 6-3 Conn Iggulden --vs-- Jane Austen 1-8 Neil Gaiman --vs-- Sophie Kinsella 8-1 Gabriel Garcia Márquez --vs-- William Faulkner 5-2 Paulo Coelho --vs-- Rebecca Gable 6-1 Now I will do a little lottery again to see who will battle who in round 3.
