And even though the twist at the end was not a surprise, I thought Jodi Picoult did an incredible job of taking a difficult subject and turning it into a great book. "Sage Singer befriends an old man who's particularly beloved in her community. Josef Weber is everyone's favorite retired teacher and Little League coach. They strike up a friendship at the bakery where Sage works. One day he asks Sage for a favor: to kill him. Shocked, Sage refuses…and then he confesses his darkest secret - he deserves to die, because he was a Nazi SS guard. Complicating the matter? Sage's grandmother is a Holocaust survivor. What do you do when evil lives next door? Can someone who's committed a truly heinous act ever atone for it with subsequent good behavior? Should you offer forgiveness to someone if you aren't the party who was wronged? I've only read one of Picoult's books so far (House Rules) and that was very good. She always seems to pick difficult subjects, but does them really well. I have read quite a few books by Elif Shafak both in the english language as well as Turkish and all have been great reads and this book was no exception. Although it took me a while to get into this book it was well worth it and by the middle of the book I was hooked. When it comes to me I absolutely loved it and could not put it down. For that reason on its own I gave this book a 5/5. One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. That seems very familiar... My own mojo has been awol for the last few months. Sometimes the mind is on overload. But sometimes it might help if you browse the forum and read other people's logs and get all excited about reading and then go and try a novel or another... But it doesn't always go that way. I purchased this book while waiting for me flight back home (had to wait 5 hours!). I am so glad I bought this book as I absolutely loved it! I could not put it down and read most of it in the airport. I give this book a 5/5. I look forward to reading Rowell's other books also.
