muggle not
List your favorite sad / soulful (for want of a better word) song. A song that conveys sadness or soulfulness. One of my favorite soulful songs is the Hank Williams song....I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry. There are many sad/soulful songs that I can think of but IMHO, there is none better. http://youtu.be/WkztDzpTHKA The first version is better but if it doesn't load, try this version Edited September 2, 2013 by muggle not
Talisman
Stevie Wonder - Otis Redding - and best of all Aretha Franklin -
poppyshake
Al Green - which is almost unbearably sad and Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2U

This though is my second favorite after the Hank Williams song of I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry. There are many versions of The Long Black Veil but I like the original by Lefty Frizzell the best. It makes the hair on my arms stand on end. Edited September 2, 2013 by muggle not

poppy
Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2U This is one of the ones I'd choose too Poppyshake Daniel and Sad song by Elton John. Ticking is another very sad song of Elton's Otis Redding - Love this one too, Talisman. Edited September 2, 2013 by poppy
poppy
This would be my pick of the saddest, most moving song. Annie Lennox is singing this for the children orphaned by AIDS in Africa. Annie has such a huge heart. http://youtu.be/nN-jNmzSTok
Drislane
Damien Rice's The Blowers Daughter comes to mind on first thought. Raw, naked and powerful.
muggle not
IMHO this is arguably the best soulful song, Old Man River sung by Paul Robeson. Kylie, what do you think? Edited September 4, 2013 by muggle not

Chrissy
A great selection, really varied. One that always makes my heart ache is David Bowie's . So much feeling written into a simple love song of sorts. Edited September 4, 2013 by Chrissy
Eleonora
I think Mad World is a very sad song.. but only Gary Jules version, the original Tears for Fears has not the same atmosphere.

gardengirl
I think that Everybody's Talkin' At Me [theme from Midnight Cowboy] sung by Kriss Kristophersson? is a very soulful song. so is Sittin' In The Dock Of The Bay by Otis Reading. poppyshake
I think that Everybody's Talkin' At Me [theme from Midnight Cowboy] sung by Kriss Kristophersson? is a very soulful song Me too .. it's beautiful but it's Harry Nilsson isn't it? .. or does Kris do a cover? Harry's Without You is also very sad and soulful but I don't like Mariah's cover .. it's better sung simply, imo. Sittin' In The Dock Of The Bay by Otis Reading. Brilliant song .. and you can brush up on your whistling at the same time
poppyshake
I like Eric Carmen's All By Myself (though not when sung by Celine) but, thanks to Bridget, you can't help thinking of it in conjunction with dying alone and being eaten by alsatians

Marie H
Oh dear, I'm not sure that I should mention that my sad song is How Soon is Now? by The Smiths. It's so sad to listen the lyrics, but the music is so beautiful. The whole listening experience is wonderfully bittersweet. I am suddenly back to teenage angst....
