Michelle Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 I was wondering if anyone had read further books by Maggie since reading The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox? If so, how did you feel it compared? Anyone who already liked her.. which has been your favourite book? Quote
Polka Dot Rock Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 For me, After You'd Gone is not only my favourite of hers, but is definitely in my current Top 10 favourite books that I've ever read. Wonderful novel. For me, Esme Lennox is the best thing she has written since What about you Michelle? What's your favourite? Quote
happyanddandy Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 I have bought 3 more of her books from Amazon but they are on my TBR at the moment - am looking forward to them Quote
Michelle Posted June 14, 2007 Author Posted June 14, 2007 What about you Michelle? What's your favourite? I was thinking about that, and I can't decide. I have a special love of After You'd Gone because it's the first one I read. Esme I liked because I think it had a clever simplicity to it, despite the style.. if that makes sense? But then, I also really enjoyed The Distance Between Us. Quote
Janet Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 I'm currently just over half way through The Vanishing Acts of Esme Lennox and I only started it yesterday evening (this is really fast for me!). The only other book of hers that I've read is After You'd Gone which I read quite a few years ago - I can't really remember much about it but I know I really enjoyed it. Quote
LittleLijah Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 I've just bought the Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox but have yet to start it but sounds like a good one. By the sounds of it I should keep my eyes peeled for others by the same author. Quote
Michelle Posted June 15, 2007 Author Posted June 15, 2007 We had some copies to give away here, and the vast majority really liked it. As you can see from the thread, she'sone of my favourite authors. Quote

Renniemist Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 I have read and enjoyed three of her books. I have still to read The Distance Between Us. My favourite was definitely the vanishing Act of Esme Lennox. Quote
Icecream Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 I loved the Vanishing Act. I have lent it to my mother in law as she used to work in one of those places years ago (I know I am young but OH is 44 so my mother in law is older than you might think). I would love to read more by Maggie to see what else she has done. Quote
scottishbookworm Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 I've read "My lover's lover" by maggie o'farrell! Quote

scottishbookworm Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 Did you enjoy it?yes I did thanks! it's a good story! Quote
Guest Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I've read all of her books and I think my favourite is Esme (for short:D). I thought After You'd Gone was too predictable. The 'shocking thing' the MC saw didn't shock me and I saw it coming a mile off. I don't remember much about My Lover's Lover and The Distance Between Us confused me, with all its jumping about in time. That said, I read it in one sitting and it's probably my second favourite after Esme. God, I felt so sorry for her and angry on her behalf! Quote
Michelle Posted March 20, 2008 Author Posted March 20, 2008 I do agree that the shocking event wasn't that shocking, but that was my only disappointment.. I really did enjoy the way it all developed, and came together. My Lover's Lover feels very different from her other books.. I loved the first half, but wasn't so keen overall. The Distance Between Us I also enjoyed.. my brain often has trouble with books that jump around, but for some reason I seem to be able to follow Maggie's! I think she has a style you'll either enjoy, or not quite get. There's just something about her books that I like reading.. there hasn't been one book I've disliked, and I'm looking forward to the next. Quote
~V~ Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 I got 'After You'd Gone' a while ago off RISI. When I started to read it, it all felt far too familiar so I flicked through to the end (spoiling it for myself if I haven't read it) and some bits felt familiar and other bits didn't. Anyway, I'm sure I've read it years ago but didn't clock the author and title. I hate doing that Quote
Inver Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 I'm reading 'After you'd Gone' at the moment and quite enjoying it. Quote
Esiotrot Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Would love to hear what you think when your finished Inver 'After you'd gone' is the one I am after most, but would love to read anything else by Maggie O'Farrell after enjoying Esme so much. At the moment I have a self imposed book embargo, no new book purchases as I have am saving for our hols - charity shops, bookrings and library only. Quote
Inver Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 (edited) I'm reading 'After you'd Gone' at the moment and quite enjoying it. Finished it. What a wonderful, compelling read. Loved the story. Would recommend. Who wanted to know what I thought of the ending. Somebody asked me in a post and I can't remember who it was! Edited December 15, 2012 by Michelle Quote
tbain Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 I've Just finished Esme Lennox and it was really good. Would definitely read some more of O Farrells novels. Quote
Inver Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 Finished Esme Lennox on hols. Was a great read....loved it See here for proof See I do read on my hols Quote
Loopyloo100 Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 I've not read any Maggie O'Farrell yet, but I hope I enjoy her books as I've 3 on my TBR pile: After You'd Gone My Lover's Lover The Distance Between us I know they are not a series, but has anyone any suggestions in which order I should read them? Quote
Michelle Posted August 6, 2008 Author Posted August 6, 2008 I would say in the order that you have them. It was the first that got me interested in her writing, the second is very different (some people aren't keen, but I did like it), then the last one is more like After You'd Gone. After that lot, read The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox, which I think is her best. Quote
Loopyloo100 Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 Thanks for the suggestion Michelle - I think that must have been subconsciously in my mind when I suggested them in that order! I'll certainly be on the look out for Esme as it seems that everyone who reads it enjoys it. Quote
Ruth Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 I've read Esme Lennox - great book. I also read My Lover's Lover, a couple of years ago. I really enjoyed it, although I think Esme Lennox had the edge. I have After You'd Gone, on my tbr. Quote
