chesilbeach Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 I read Human Traces last year - it took me just under a week, but it's a very compelling story so it didn't feel overly long as you sometimes find with doorstops. Quote
Kidsmum Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 I can't remember to be honest KM, probably a week or 10 days but time very well spent as is my favourite book of all time. I read Human Traces last year - it took me just under a week, but it's a very compelling story so it didn't feel overly long as you sometimes find with doorstops. Thanks guys i'd like to fit it in before Christmas but as i'm reading the Gormenghast trilogy at the moment which is also a big book ,i'm not sure.......still a week isn't bad.....so tempting!!! frankie Posted November 5, 2013 Author Posted November 5, 2013 Thanks guys i'd like to fit it in before Christmas but as i'm reading the Gormenghast trilogy at the moment which is also a big book ,i'm not sure.......still a week isn't bad.....so tempting!!! Do you think you'll read the whole trilogy, all the books back to back? If you do, I applaud you! It would be one mega read... I don't think Human Traces is that long, per se... Well it's longer than an average book, but it's not a doorstopper, in my humble opinion. I think doorstoppers start at 800 pages or so. And then again, my copy of Titus Groan is 367 pages or so long, but the font is small and there's practically no space between lines... I think Human Traces would be a quicker read than TG. Quote
Kidsmum Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 I'm tempted to read the whole trilogy in one go i know if i put it to one side other books will come up & it'll be awhile before i get back to it . My copy sounds exactly like yours i couldn't manage to read it without my glasses on or i have to hold it at arms length to be able to make the words out Quote
pontalba Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Even at arm's length.....! No dice! That's the copy I have. Getting better for me, I've realized it is somewhat like the fairy tales, or Grim(m);s Fairy Tales that were read to me and by me as a child. Quote
frankie Posted November 6, 2013 Author Posted November 6, 2013 I'm tempted to read the whole trilogy in one go i know if i put it to one side other books will come up & it'll be awhile before i get back to it . I know what you mean, and I worry about the same thing... But I know that if I read the whole trilogy, book after book, I probably wouldn't get to read anything else this year My copy sounds exactly like yours i couldn't manage to read it without my glasses on or i have to hold it at arms length to be able to make the words out Even at arm's length.....! No dice! That's the copy I have. It is definitely the trickiest copy to read in ages! I expect some nice muscle formation after reading the whole thing Getting better for me, I've realized it is somewhat like the fairy tales, or Grim(m);s Fairy Tales that were read to me and by me as a child. Glad to hear it's getting better, I hope it will blow your mind in the end! Quote

frankie Posted November 7, 2013 Author Posted November 7, 2013 (edited) Thanks Athena You guys will never believe what I just heard!!! There's a new, recently opened bookshop in my home-home town in Nurmes!!! We haven't had a bookshop in about 20 years!! I remember the last bookshop, I liked it very much, but I was a kid, I didn't have money to buy books, and I don't think I was such a hoarder back then, I was big on libraries, I practically grew up in the library... There is a book section at the biggest grocerystore in Nurmes, and the selection is pretty good for such a small one, but they don't have any English titles (no surprise really) and the books are ridiculously expensive. The most expensive books I've ever come across. I never shop there. But now, there is a bookshop!! A real bookshop!! Oh, I'm going to save some money and the next time I go to visit my parents, I'm going to go in and browse to my heart's content and buy something... I want to support the entrepreneur... I've looked at the website, and she seems like a real book lover, a kindred spirit... Such happy news! You can see pics over here Edited November 7, 2013 by frankie Quote

frankie Posted November 7, 2013 Author Posted November 7, 2013 (edited) Books and owls on their site. I love them already. Yay! Oh if you love owls, you will love this piece of news, I read it online yesterday. A man was kayaking somewhere, I don't remember, and he saw something weird flapping about in the lake, and went over and discovered it was an owl At first the owl tried to swim away, and then thought better of it and wanted to board the kayak. Poor thing! The man got the owl on the kayak, and the owl was shivering from the cold, and he crept closer and closer to the man, and then stuck its head inside the man's life jacket. Ohhh! The man took it home, dried him and let him rest in the warmth of his house, and then let it fly away He saved its life for sure! Reading the story made my day You can see pics here. I think the pics with the people are from the opening day The man in the hat, with the gray hair, is a Karelian author, Heikki Turunen, I heard he's related to the shop keeper Very cool! Quote

Little Pixie Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 Aww, what a lovely owl story ! Love that pic. I`m sharing your excitement at a new bookshop, too. Quote
pontalba Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 Ok the next book I buy off BD will be replay! Good plan! I have new books! As a book swap from chaliepud, I got - Human Traces by Sebastian Faulks (which I hear is superb! ) - Utterly Lovable Dogs (which is an utterly lovable book with pics of utterly lovable dogs, and quotes on our canine friends ) Thanks chalie! Where was I... I went on google to search for 'utterly lovable dogs' and then had all these amazing doggy pictures to look at and forgot all about myself... Oh yes... For the sci-fi/fantasy reading challenge, I had ordered these and now received: - Storm Front by Jim Butcher (the first book in the Dresden Files -series) - Bitter Seeds by Ian Tregillis (this is a series, too, which I didn't know about until only just recently) TBR stands at 338 at the moment... No, wait, can that be right? No, I think it's 438 Yes, 438 for sure! The Faulks sounds very interesting. I think I have one of the Butcher books, haven't read it yet.
