Wipples Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 I think it is interesting that it brought more of the inner world of bdsm to 'mainstream' america, but erotica has been around for a long time, and way more well written... The Sleeping Beauty Trilogy written by Anne Rice, published under the pseudonym A. N. Roquelaure is what comes straight to my mind. As a big fan of Erotica, I agree with you. Fifty Shades of Grey was funny, repetitive and no imagination whatsoever, money not well spent but I try not to regret any book I buy.I am surprised at the popularity of it,and so many more books after that with the same "idea". There is so much better to read if you want something in this genre. Quote
BSchultz19 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 I read the first one and was a little intrigued. I only made it halfway through the second one. I swear the author has like 100 words in her vocabulary and just used them in a different order to create this book. I obviously have no room to talk because she is a published, best-selling author and I am a high school student without anything published, but the writing was just awful. I'm sure there are much better "erotica" books than this one with much better writing. Quote

Janet Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 She may have a limited vocabulary but it's netted her $95 million in the past year - making her the highest earning author of 2012, overtaking James Patterson, as well as making her the fastest selling author ever! Quote
Raven Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 ^ That just confirms my theory that people are idiots. Quote
BSchultz19 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Her PR director must be a genius. Also, sex sells. Quote
Athena Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Also, sex sells.x Unfortunately, this is true for many things. P.S. I got the first book for free, may or may not read it at some point. I'm not sure if I could put up with all the erotic scenes or not. It's definitely not a book I plan to read any time soon, there are too many other ones that I'm more excited to read. Quote
Carelia Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 I started reading the first book, but I have yet to finish it. Too much repition and the way it's written is horrendous.. oh my, my inner goddess was definitely not doing sommersaults! Quote
Sakura Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 I've picked through them, but I couldn't read much of it. I do enjoy reading some mindless porn now and then, but the sex scenes here where just so silly, even downright dangerous in some parts, if people actually tried that stuff. Quote
Librarylizzi Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 I read about a third of it and I just wanted to slap her, and not in a sexual way. There are much better books out there of this genre. However it must be said she found the perfect time and market. Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 I read about a third of it and I just wanted to slap her, and not in a sexual way. Made me laugh Quote
HayleyMarie Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Just a fun fact to add here! My A-Level law teacher actually knows the woman who wrote it, through her sister in law I believe, and apparently when my teacher read it she put it down and just stared into space for quite some time. She couldn't believe that such a quiet woman could come up with such a thing! The phrase "it's always the ones you least suspect" springs to mind! Quote
Sakura Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Hm, that doesn't surprise me much. I mean, it's very Mary-Sue erotic fiction, exactly what I would expect from someone quiet and shy. Hell, I am shy and quiet and I wrote a lot of romantic fanfiction when I was younger (never Mary-Sue, though, strictly slash). Quote
cassie12 Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 I read Fifty shades, in fact the 3 of them although i did begin to use interest but thought I must finish them. In reality there ae more more better books of this genre about and i am reading This Man by Jodi Malpass and just finished Empowered by Nikki Rosbanks which are better books cassie 12 Quote
catwoman Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 I was given the book to read after my friends raved about them. They were easy to read and surprisingly got my reading mojo back at the time. I agree with the camp who say that the book isn't a work of art, however like twilight, it's brought people who wouldn't read muhch if at all, reading... That can be nothing but a good thing. Quote

Sakura, I think I know what slash is it's sort of fan fiction taken from TV series characters isn't it ? But what's Mary-Sue? Quote
Sadia Tahna Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 The fifty shades trilogy were 3 very badly written books. The quality of the novels sucked from a literary perspective. But somehow James managed to portray an unforgettable character: Christian Grey. I loved him, in all honesty. I don't think we should try to find something more in there. It is what it is, an erotica. It gained so much popularity because it was easy to read, required no contemplation or concentration. It was the first erotic romance have read. Though I thought it was a badly written book, I enjoyed my time with it. Quote
Anna Begins Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 The trailer is out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjWrXLhYg7Q (Contains some racy material 1:45 in, for about 15 seconds) I have to say, I don't like the Christian Grey actor but it looks better than I thought it would. Quote

I agree. I watched the trailer and the actor who plays Christian Grey is not at all what I imagined. And in the scenes they show for the trailer, it appears as though he isn't a very good actor. Virginia Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 The funniest thing I've seen yet are the elderly customers at Barnes & Noble, who are interested in the books. I lie to you not, I saw a senior saint, (old gent) stooped over, using a walker, wearing spectacles and oxygen...hiding in a corner, hunched over one of the books. My thought at the time was if he stroked out from reading it, was NOT performing CPR, lmbo! It would serve him right. He should be somewhere reading the Hobbit!! I was tickled to no end! Quote
Calexa Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 I was given the book as a present, and as appreciative as I am of the thoughtfulness shown to me by someone taking the time to shop, purchase, wrap and present the gift...being burnt at the stake might have been a less torturous alternative to reading 'Fifty Shades of Humdrum'. The most pointlessly verbose book I've ever had the displeasure of reading. With the Fifty Shades and Twilight books...I shake my head at what is published nowadays. But then I'm sure some would have the same opinion about some of the books I read. To each their own, I guess... Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 If 50 Shades of Grey was written by a man . . . Quote
