Your favourite read of the year? I have read lots of really good books this year, but I’d probably go for Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch. I don’t usually do fantasy – or series – and this covers both of those but I loved it, and it led me on to two sequels. Having said I don’t ‘do’ fantasy, an honourable mention goes to Stardust by Neil Gaiman, which I also loved I must also mention A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness – simply wonderful Your favourite author of the year? Ben Aaronovitch (see above!) Your most read author of the year? Ben Aaronovitch /E L James (yes, I’m still asking myself why ). Your favourite book cover of the year? The Thoughts and Happenings of Wilfred Price, Purveyor of Superior Funerals by Wendy Jones And also Ben Aaronovitch’s books! The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, the one you read least of)? Mrs Pargeter’s Point of Honour by Simon Brett. I read all the other ‘Mrs Pargeter’ books about 15 or so years ago, but my tastes have changed considerably since then. The book that most disappointed you? Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator by Roald Dahl – it was just plain silly! Also The Cruise of the Snark by Jack London – too dry for me. The funniest book of the year? Alone in Berlin - Hans Fallada This had been sitting on my shelf since christmas mainly because I thought it would be heavy going and wanted to be in the mood for it. It was an incredible read and I really wish I had read it earlier. Your favourite author of the year? Haruki Murakami There is only so long you can keep hearing an authors name and ignore it. This year was the first time I read any Murakami and I instantly realised why he is as popular as he is. Your most read author of the year? Jo Nesbo & Haruki Murakami I read 4 books from each author including 2 non-fiction titles from Murakami Your favourite book cover of the year? Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea - Jules Verne The edition I had was an old one with some fantastic illustrations in it and the cover was the sort of thing that would have engrossed me as a young boy The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, the one you read least of)? 2666 - Roberto Bolano I made it about 200 pages into this huge book before deciding to leave it aside for another time. The story was ok but it never really grabbed my attention like I wanted it to. I may have another crack at it next year. The book that most disappointed you? Pao - Kerry Young This was one of those recommended reads in Waterstones that I picked up. I had also heard it mentioned a few times as a great read but I found is a slow plodding affair. Had it been much longer than it was I may have given up on it. The funniest book of the year? Catch 22 - Joseph Heller This book had me chuckling out loud to myself more than once. Dark humour but great humour. Your favourite literary character this year? Tom Waaler - Jo Nesbo (author) Although Harry Hole is the star of the novels I really grew to love the character of Tom Waaler. Sure he is an evil mysognistic asshole but he makes a great villian. Your favourite classic of the year? Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov Another book that I should have read much sooner than I have. Nabokov's use of the English language is simply astounding. An honourable mention should go to Crime & Punishment - Fyodor Dostoyevsky . As the year has gone on I have come to realise just what an effect this book had on me and I regularly find myself thinking about it. Your favourite non-fiction book this year? The Secret Race - Tyler Hamilton A fantastic account of life in the pro-cycling circuit with amazing insights into the murky world of doping. The Pinecone by Jenny Uglow. One of my favourite biographers produces one of her best. Superb. Favourite novel of the year was Andrew Miller's Pure. Your favourite author of the year? Jenny Uglow, not just because of the above, but because I so enjoyed her presentation at the Ilkley Literature Festival as well. Your most read author of the year? Three writers qualify, all with 2 books each; I tend to spread my reading out: Michael Dibdin, Julia Stagg, Anthony Trollope Your favourite book cover of the year? The cover of Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day, which I read from the volume published by The Folio Society. The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, the one you read least of)? Ash by James Herbert. I've read some pretty poor ones this year, but this is by far and away the worst - perhaps the worst I've ever read. The book that most disappointed you? Stone's Fall by Ian Pears. An Instance of the Fingerpost is a long-time favourite, and I was expecting something in the same league. It wasn't! The funniest book of the year? My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell I don't often find books funny, and whilst this was somewhat erratic (the language was far too flowery for the book to feature in my top few overall), there were some scenes that made my genuinely laugh out loud, and that is no mean achievement by an author! Your favourite literary character this year? Jaffy Brown, the hero of Carol Birch's Jamrach's Menagerie - a great read. Perhaps the one character who really stood out this year, although I continue to enjoy Aurelio Zen in the eponymous series by Michael Dibdin. Your favourite children's book this year? None - the single one I read, Pirates an Adventure with Moby Dick by Gideon Defoe, was so bad I can't list it under this! Your favourite classic of the year? Oliver Twist. So much better as a book than in any other media (although the David Lean film gets close). The musical is rubbish in comparison. Your favourite non-fiction book this year? Guess what, it's The Pinecone again; close runner-up was James Holland's Dam Busters, in a good year for non-fiction. Your favourite biography this year? And again! Your favourite collection of short stories this year? Your favourite poetry collection this year? None for either of these - I'm not really into either. Your favourite illustrated book of the year? Back to Gerald Durrell's My Family and other Animals, in the Folio Society edition, illustrated superbly by Paul Cox. Your favourite publisher of the year? Slightly Foxed, for their unpretentious but so handleable series of twentieth century memoirs, and their magazine. Your favourite audiobook of the year? I've only listened to one this year, and am still doing so, but it is excellent: Don Quixote, read by Roy Macmillan Your favourite re-read of the year? I've had a few disappointments, unfortunately. Coffee at Luke's by Jennifer Cruise (ed.) (a bit of an amateur production; I found some pretty basic errors in Gilmore Girls knowledge), The Rights of the Reader by Daniel Pennac (so boring!), Rescuing Patty Hearst by Virginia Holman (silly me thought this would be about Patty Hearst!), The First Person and Other Stories by Ali Smith (I didn't like her writing style), The Great Typo Hunt by Jeff Deck (a bit boring and didn't focus enough on the typos they found), Sh!te's Original Miscellany by A Parody (just plain silly; not funny at all). The funniest book of the year? Catch-22 by Joseph Heller and The Lucy Family Alphabet by Judith Lucy (Australian comedian). Your favourite literary character this year? Tom Ripley in The Talented Mr Ripley by Patricia Highsmith, and every single character in Catch-22 by Joseph Heller (and there are plenty of them!) Your favourite children's book this year? The message is to me more important than the messenger, but if I had to I guess I would say all of the above. Your most read author of the year? There is only one author that I have read more than one book by this year, Arnaldur Indridason Your favourite book cover of the year? This is easy - The 100 Year Old Man who Climbed out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson. A very close second is The Hills is Lonely by Lillian Beckwith. My older brother had loaned this to me over a year ago, and I finally got around to reading it. I totally loved it! I cried at the end, too, which I don't often do. Your favourite author of the year? Always, always Haruki Murakami. Best writer ever. Your most read author of the year? Arthur Conan Doyle...I read SO much Sherlock Holmes this year! The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, the one you read least of)? The Girl who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson. I just couldn't get into it. Your favourite literary character this year? Silas, the vampire guardian in The Graveyard Book. Who knew vampires could be such good parents? Your favourite classic of the year? Your favourite book cover of the year? ‘Mr Chartwell’ by Rebecca Hunt The book you abandoned? ‘I Capture The Castle’ by Dodie Smith – but I do plan on having another run at it in the future. The book that most disappointed you? I've had a few disappointments, unfortunately. Coffee at Luke's by Jennifer Cruise (ed.) (a bit of an amateur production; I found some pretty basic errors in Gilmore Girls knowledge), Rescuing Patty Hearst by Virginia Holman (silly me thought this would be about Patty Hearst!), I'm so bummed to see those two titles there Your favourite non-fiction book this year?
