  1. Thanks everyobody for saying my english is good .. you're all sweet and too kind. Just let me know where you want me to send your money now.. c'mon, you can't have said that for free! I read Love Story too, perhaps 15 years ago or something. I really enjoyed it, I really cried my heart out. Yes, Frankie I've already read RWS and I thought it was a great book! I took a good look at your suggestions about other Borroghs ' Books and the only one I found was Dry. Bu it's been ages since I requested it.. I would like to read it before forcing the library to buy other AB books.
  2. Yep, Julie's avatar is so cute. But Geordie9's one still scares me a l-o-t
  3. I must admit we are really rude in Italy. We use cursewords every four "normal" words in everyday life because we are so drencgìhed in bad manners that we don't even try to be ashamed of what we say. And it's so sad.. Anyway, some cursewords are used in books and even at school, sometimes, and not only by pupils but by teachers too. In my opinion it's not something to be proud of, but that's the way it is here. I'm not a mother yet but I work with teenagers (12-18) and I have to admit they wouldn't read a book unless it's closer to their reality. When they read they want to find he same words they say when they are with their friends. I help a 14 years old dislexic boy with his homeworks and once he had to try and read a chapter of a book. He chose Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Suddenly he stopped reading and said: "Come on, he's dying and he doesn't even swear a little?" A book should reflect the society in which we live, but what happens if the society is slowly slipping towards subculture?
  4. Thank you Kylie.. I'm afraid there are plenty of things that get lost in translation, sadly. Sometimes, I like reading american or english classics in their original versione and then I read the translated one and I find that, even if the story is obviously the same, the italian version looses some - how to call it - shades. I can't wait to start reading those books! You know Frankie, that was the first thing that came up to my mind when I found the library. Unfortunately, Dry is not in the list of the available yet, but the other good thing is that I can ask the library to buy some books sometimes. In the next few days I have to prepare a list of the books I would like to read and then, hopefully in a couple of weeks, I will have a copy!!! Yeeeehh! Ah, Frankie, The Class was the first book I read in my life. It's my very first time with the pages! I was 8 and I found the book in my parents' room. They told me not to read it because it wasn't for children.. But, you know, I had some troubles with authorities (still have) and I stole the book as soon as I could. I loved it sooo much!! At the beginning I loved Daniel, because he had my surname, I must admit. I read it so many times since, and I always find it a wonderful story. I do hope you'll like it!
  5. Oh, I'm so sorry. May he rest in peace.
  6. I found a library with english books too .. and some of them are NEW!!!! I found The Book Thief.. ok not so new, but still not tranlated in italian. Now I can read some of the books you mentioned here in this forum and maybe I could emprove my poor english too.. unless it's too late for that!
  7. Nothing to add.. I just want to send you all big squeezy hugs, everybody!
  8. I'm reading Il fu Mattia Pascal, written by Luigi Pirandello (can it be The Late Mattia Pascal in english? I think I saw that title once) It's the story of a man who lives a life he doesn't want. When everybody believes him to be dead because of an accident, he flew away and starts a new life. It's not a bad book, but it's.. predictable, that's all. Every italian classic is made up of the same rules: you can say what is going to happen just reading the first few pages. That's why I love english and american literature: there are some bad books too, but most of the times you don't have a hint of what's going to happen until it really happens. Anyway, maybe I'm just a little tired and grumpy because of all the troubles I'm passing through.. I need to relax a little, stop thinking for a little while. I'm happy to be back again. You knowm Pontalba.. I missed you and all the others soo much!!! I know things will be better now I found you once again. Tomorrow I'm going to the library and see If I can find something good.. I copied most of the books you talked about.. I hope to find a couple of them.
  9. We're going to have it translated here in Italy maybe in 20 years time!! So sad.. I can read the books you all usually mention here when you've already forgotten their exitance! Stupid un-english country! I'm reading a stupid italian classic at the moment.. my grumpy mood don't like it.
  10. Went to the library this morning: I took a couple of books for my next few nights in hospital. Edna Ferber's So Big and Wonder when you'll miss me by Amanda Davis are already in my bag wrapped in my shocking pink pijama.. yeah.
  11. Have you ever heard about the Zone diet, created by Doctor Barry Sears? I read something about it during my search of an "antidote" to my Hyperinsulinemia. Th diet seems to have some good points, but I'm not too sure. I was wandering if anyone have ever tried it or heard about it.
  12. It was a legend!! I saw Waters In Padua last July and it was amazing. I saw him in Milan in 2007 too, that was The Dark Side of the Moon gig. It's like facing the history of music in person. Brilliant!!

    Cars

Wow, sounds so cool!! Are you sure is a car, Athena? It seems like the Enterprise to me. Only joking.. that is a car, mine is just the illusion of a vehicle. The only optioan mine has are the wheels.
  14. I'm not too sure she did all for money, as a lot of people say. I think it's just difficult to turn out the lights on a world in which you've lived for nearly twenty years. Tolkien spent his whole life in the Middle Earth, maybe she's just feeling orphan. What is more she makes teens read and it's enough for me.I don't know if I'll see this movie: I've read the book and I thought it was funny with all the hand-notes written, but it will depends on the movie production.
  15. Wow, you're all going to a lot of stuff: new jobs, new holidays, the last year at school, some silly behaviours.. I haven't anything to add, this month is quiet uneventful.. but i'm enjoying your experiences.. weel, not every of youe experience, Chalie. And Chrissy, bentornata!
  16. Thank you dears, you're all so sweet!! We all have our cross to bear, haven't we? Chalie, I think milk is suppesed to help because it's mainly based on protein and lactose: proteins should contrast sugar according to my doctor, so milk should be a "neutral" food.. I don't know.. Let's wait for next week and see.
  17. Yes, Pontalba, it's more or less what happens to me at night but the cause is different from the most common ones described in the article. My illness is this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperinsulinemia And I can't take any sugar when I have a Hypoglicemic shock because I can't eat sugar in any form, especially if it's not followed by proteins. That's why is so difficult to stop those crisis. Some people are fine after a glass of milk but it's not working. I have to go back to hospital next week and we'll see what to do: they will check me during the night and we'll try different solutions. I feel a little like a laboratory animal.. I just hope it will work. I've been trying anything for the last 7 years, but the disease is changing faster then the medical knowledge. It's a fighter, but it does not know I'm tougher!
  18. Milk isn't working as it shuold be. I'm still trying to find a way to put an end to the shocks at night. As Homer Simpson says. "D'oh"!!
  19. I still have so much to read according to your lists..
  20. Thanks Chrissy, We're trying something different for tonight: a glass of milk on my bedside table, I will drink it when I'll feel the shock is coming and we'll see if it works. If this won't work we'll trying other solution. Don't worry too much for me, though.. I'm a fighter!! Or at least, that's what I'm trying to be
  21. Thank you, you always give me strength with your kind words, Pontalba.
  22. Well done, everybody!! You're doing a great job! I've lost other 2 kg last week (4,4 lbs) but not becase I wanted to: my disease is .. I don't know how to say it .. changing (?) and it's not a great news. I feel a little better during the day, but now I spend every night shaken by hypoglycemic shocks: I can't move, I can't speak, drenched in cold sweat and tachycardia. I can solve a crisis like this during the day, but it's really hard during the night because no one can help me. I'm seeing the doctor in a few days, but when I phoned her she said it's a new phase of hyperinsulinemia and I just have to understand how to handle it. I don't know why I'm losing weight this fast, though.
  23. I think Mad World is a very sad song.. but only Gary Jules version, the original Tears for Fears has not the same atmosphere.
