  1. Does anyone know of any good books set in Germany after World War II. I know I have read one but can't remember the title, and I'd like to read others. I have a book set in Japan during and after the war which I'm looking forward to, and this reminded me of the German one I read. TIA
  2. Karen.d I loved watching the cyclists going past when we had an international race here too Talisman. Can't wait until they're back again next year. I haven't had time to watch any of the games. We've all had the flu the last couple of weeks, and now we're better I'm scrambling to catch up with my studies.

  4. pterodactyl (my son's watching a dinosaur doco )
  5. Congrats Timstar. The bear photos are amazing. All we get in our backyard are the neighbours cats, birds, and the odd hedgehog. We'd definitely get a fright if we got anything like that down here. Have had a kid sick on the couch for the last two days. Hopefully it doesn't last much longer, or spread to the rest of the house.
  6. I'd love to hear Starry, Starry Night' sung by a choir, too. I love that song.
  7. I hope you feel better Nollaig. My DD had a cold earlier in the week and I've got my fingers crossed I don't catch it. The kids are back to school on Monday so I can start getting some proper study done for the paper I started last Monday. I'm taking my 2 year old nephew to a model train exhibition on Sunday. Can't wait to see his face when he sees them. It's hard to believe my now-taller-than-me 15 year old was once that small.
  8. I can't remember for certain, but I think it was Elizabeth George. I'd been watching crime shows on TV for a while, but avoiding the books. Then one day I decided if I liked the programs, I'd probably like the books. I know it was an Elizabeth George novel that got me hooked. I wish my library had more of hers.
  9. I finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society yesterday. I nearly put it straight down when I saw it was written in letters, as I don't like books like that, but I persisted. I'm glad I did. Excellent book.
  10. I have a very early Winnie the Pooh. I can't remember how old it is though.
  11. There's an author that a lot of New Zealanders rave about, Alan Duff. I can't get into his books at all. I wonder if I can convince my non-reading son to try the Richard Castle books. He loves the tv show.
  12. I'm from New Zealand, almost in the middle of the North Island. Lived in the same town nearly all my life.
  13. Usually two, one in the bath (paperback) and one in bed (hardback). When my shower is fixed then it'll probably be one. Although if you count the book I was halfway through when I had to return it to the library that makes it three. It'll probably be a couple of months before I get around to getting that one out again though.
  14. I used to sort the books at a charity shop. Only found a couple of photos, we put them on the wall by the counter for a while in case the owner came back in. Once found a used ticket to the Eiffel Tower. As we live in New Zealand, my kids thought it was really cool to have a ticket from so far away.
  15. I forgot Mills and Boons - read one once, never again. And awards. I had to read a couple for uni this year and I thought they were rubbish. I also don't usually read Stephen King but I'm reading 11.22.63 at the moment because it's a subject I'm interested in. Not far in yet, so I may still give up.
  16. Sci/fi, fantasy, westerns. Never got into any of those. I used to avoid crime, but read one once and enjoyed it (can't remember when or why). Now it's my go to genre. I don't really like chicklit, it's usually very shallow.
  17. I know for me, when I'm feeling down or stressed I can't read romances of any kind, even the well written ones I sometimes enjoy. I find myself getting really cynical about the story. If I've got a heavy workload on with my studies I prefer something that I can really get into so it takes my mind off the study for a bit.
  18. I can't remember the name of the book now but I can still remember in one book I read the main character talking about the death of her father when she was a child, then only a couple of pages later he's somehow giving her away at her wedding. I've got to try and remember what book it was now. If a book has too many spelling mistakes it really bugs me. I always pick them up, not just in books, and noticed a big one at our local hospital the other week.
  19. Most of the time no. But I had to read The Outsiders and Lord of the Flies for schoo and I enjoyed both of those. Most books I've had to read I didn't. It does put me off joining a book group too. Not just having to read the book chosen, but I've always got a pile of books waiting to read, and I'd hate the feeling that I had to read the book group one, not one I wanted to read.
  20. April Fool's Day by Bryce Courtenay is one of the saddest books I've read. I also read one by Danielle Steele about her son's fight with bipolar and suicide. That had me in floods. Can't remember the title though. Handle with care by Jodi Picoult I cried at the end. There was another I was thinking of but I've had a blank. I cried at the movie of Marley and Me too, but haven't read the book. I know I'll cry when I do.
