I've just about finished "We are all made of glue" by Marina Lewycka. I've really enjoyed it, quite funny, sad and insightful all at once. I think I've read "A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian" but I'm not sure, so I'll have to look for it next time I'm at the library. Have just looked on my library catalogue and they've got a few others by her as well that I'll have to read.

Finished The Reading Group by Elizabeth Noble last night. I really enjoyed it.

The Casual Vacancy - J.K. Rowling (Review thread)
bookmonkey replied to Maureen's topic in General Fiction
That makes it sound worth reading. I might have a look one day. I didn't like Harry Potter, but this sounds more like my kind of book. -

We normally get three, and if no one else wants it you can renew twice. I don't bother with bestsellers. They eventually become available in regular circulation. -
I hope they get to the bottom of it for you soon. I had something like that years ago. I have really poor eyesight anyway, but would occasionally completely lose vision. Never did figure it out, and it stopped after a couple of months, so I didn't go back to the doctor.

I'm watching series 2 on DVD at the moment. Love it. Series 3 starts here tomorrow, so I'll be taping it to watch when I've finished series 2. My daughter seemed to be getting into it yesterday too. She's usually playing on her phone while the TVs on, but last night I noticed she was nearly always focused on the TV screen instead.

You got me curious lovesreading, so I checked my library. They have 9 copies at the moment, and at least one of them is bestseller which means you can only get it for a week at a time, have to pay to issue and can't renew it, so it gets circulated quicker. And there are 128 waiting, so they'll probably get more copies in soon. I might read it at some stage. Not because of the author or anything as I didn't read Harry Potter (well, one chapter, then my son decided he didn't like it). -
Our summer is hopefully on the way. We didn't get one last year. It was horrible.

Lucky you. I love those sort of trips. One year my dad gave me $100 for my birthday and the kids went away just after, so I spent a lovely few days just wandering through as many bookshops as I could find.

I can't believe it's October already! My car broke down yesterday. $490 to fix it. There goes my credit card. I can't be without the car with my kids special needs, and it really bugs me that I have to rely on it so much.

We've had some beautiful weather here. Looks like summer is on the way. I certainly hope so as last year we didn't really have a summer. It was really wet and cold. I've been able to get a lot of outside jobs done the last few days.

Just about finished 11/22/63 by Stephen King. It was a pretty good book. I wish I hadn't read the last chapter though. I didn't like that part of it at all.

Just finished A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard. I don't usually read biographies, but I made an exception with this. Was a good read, and gave a lot of insight into what happened, and why she didn't get away sooner.

What Kind of Book Reader Are You?
bookmonkey replied to Michelle's topic in General Book Discussions
I think I'm mostly The All-the-Timer/Compulsive/Voracious/Anything Goes Reader except not quite anything goes. I'm always reading, and always have a book of some type with me so I can read in queues etc, but I do have some things I won't read. -
My son has exams next week, the first ones he's had, so I'm trying to convince him that he does actually need to to some study for them. This year has gone far too fast. I can't believe my baby girl turns 14 in three weeks.

I agree with Ian, and I often find that they say they 'like' certain books because they think they should like them. Luckily I don't know many people like this.

Well said. As a librarian, I know how much it costs libraries to replace the books that are stolen. If there weren't so many stolen, they'd be able to provide more books. I'm talking school libraries and public libraries. I know school libraries here (in NZ) have VERY small budgets, and one stolen book can severely dent that. Public libraries here are run by local authorities, and aren't much better funded in some cases. There's a lot of talk of charging for issues, maybe they wouldn't be talking about this if less was stolen.

Who is your favourite Undiscovered writer?
bookmonkey replied to marcus giovanni's topic in General Fiction
Here in NZ one I think isn't as well known as she deserves is Deborah Challinor. She writes books (some series) set in NZ that run through major events in my country's history. One series goes from mid 1800s to mid 1900s. Well worth reading. She's not even in the NZ section in my local library, with other NZ authors. -
After reading this thread I came across a word last night I couldn't figure out, and it wasn't in the dictionary either.
-
I think I tend to go with what that research says, if I can figure out the meaning without looking it up I just carry on. Sometimes I make a mental note to check the meaning later. If I can't figure out what it means, I'll look it up. My ipod touch comes in very handy in these cases, I have a dictionary on it, and it's always nearby.

Your house is on fire: which 5 books would you save?
bookmonkey replied to emelee's topic in General Book Discussions
For sentimental value I think there are only two: Wizard of Oz that my aunt and uncle gave me when I was 8 and Alice In Wonderland. I can't remember where I got it, but I have very fond memories of reading it with my son before lost interest in reading. I don't think I'd risk it for any others. -
Looking for a book

Fatherland sounds familiar. I'll have to check that out, it may be the one I've read. Hope it's not though. -
