  1. Hey there and welcome to BCF, Sazza! Hope you enjoy it I just finished watching the The Night Manager miniseries ( Tom Hiddleston), are you enjoying the book?
  2. Have fun visiting relatives and puppies, Athena! I'm heading up to the cabin again this weekend so I've been busy getting ready for that. I'm looking forward to seeing my cousins, who live next door, since they've just arrived for the summer. I haven't seen them since last fall before they headed home to San Diego. Other than that I've been spending my days trying not to worry about my job situation. We're supposed to hear this month which part of our department will be outsourced overseas and which will not. I'm really getting tired of this corporate life... I still need a job though, so if anyone wants to send good 'let-Marcia-keep-her-job' vibes I would truly appreciate it!
  3. Congrats to you and your friend, Kell - I hope you all have a blast! It was beautiful weather up at the cabin, so it was hard to leave. Everything looked great, though, and luckily no big trees were down. We bought a bunch of flowers and cleaned out all the flower beds, and the hummingbirds have arrived for the summer! We made a lot of syrup for them, enough to hopefully last until we go back up on 3rd June. I hope you all have a lovely week ahead of you .
  4. Good luck, Kell! We arrived at the cabin/lake this afternoon and after unpacking, spent most of the time sitting out on the deck enjoying the lake and the hummingbirds and all the peaceful sounds of nature. It's our first trip up of the season and yay for no trees lying across our drive! (one year I had to get out the saw and go through a little tree that was in the path of our car ) They are delivering our boat from storage tomorrow and next weekend my brother will hopefully be flying out to get it in the water. I have to be back to work on Monday but I'm hopefully coming back in a few weeks time. I hope everyone has a fab weekend!
  5. I finished Crimson Shore over the weekend and took a day or two to decide what to read next. I started A Place of Execution by Val McDermid last night and I'm feeling a little so-so about it. Oh well, we shall see!
  6. Watching the primary voting returns from Oregon and Kentucky tonight. All the speculation and projections kind of annoy me but I have to admit I'm kind of a politics junkie
  7. I don't remember when I read Fountainhead or Atlas, Anna, but I do remember reading Anthem for a class in high school and it went right over my head! I need to re-read it, clearly. I read anything and everything all year round, really, but when on vacation I usually re-read my favorites. Like if I'm up at the lake, I want to spend as much time outside as possible doing things, and if I have a new book that I'm loving all I'll want to do is read it! So, on my weekends during the summer or my annual 2 week vacation in July I'll read Circle of Friends by Maeve Binchy, Twilight, The Shining, or anything by Tracy Chevalier or Iain Pears.
  8. Any vitamin C you can get in is a good idea too, Noll! I'm on my second cup of coffee but that's it for me until tomorrow because I'm out of cream!
  9. Sounds lovely, Shirley! Some of my paternal ancestors were from Upwey, which is a village near Weymouth. I would love to travel there some day. There's even a mill there named after them. I'm so jealous, Chalie! I love talking to architects and looking at floor plans. Kitchen design is close to my heart as well. I interned during college at a custom kitchen shop and couldn't get enough. Have fun and good luck! Life for me is moving along as usual. This weekend I'm attending a local D.A.R. meeting (Daughters of the American Revolution), of which I hope to become a member. I've got about 4 ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War and I thought this would be an interesting way to learn more about them and participate in some sort of community organization. The rest of the weekend will hopefully be spent planting flowers and working on my mosaic-ed tray. I hope you feel better and have fun at your birthday celebrations, Athena!
  10. I go through periods of not being in the mood for anything, Frankie, or being in such a specific mood for a specific type of book and when I can't find it I give up. I have a shelf-full of TBR books as well as a couple bins under my bed but have I read them yet? Nope. I look, I ponder, and them I'm like "screw it, time to go find something at the used book store." That's good you got excited about the Amy Tan-like books, though! I've never watched that TV series you mentioned but I've heard good things.
  11. Coffee with a bit of sweet cream for me. It's the weekend and I'm annoyed with having to go to bed early all week. Hopefully this will keep me up for awhile!
  12. I wouldn't mind meeting Maggie Steifvater, who's going to be at this conference . Otherwise the authors I'd most like to meet, both alive and deceased, would definitely be... Charles Dickens Alexandre Dumas Stephen King Kate Ross Iain Pears Tracy Chevalier Ayn Rand Jasper Fforde LM Montgomery Donna Tartt
  13. It's a hot and windy 81f here right now! Apparently we're under a 'red flag' warning, which I've never heard of. It means that critical fire weather conditions can arise easily... In other words, Smokey the Bear says "Only YOU can prevent wild fires."
  14. I bought Crimson Shore by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child this past weekend and am almost halfway through it. I love it!
  15. Yahooo!!! I'm one happy Peacefield, that's for sure!! GoT is back on! Loved every minute, so far, of the new season. Can't wait for more!
  16. We're out of coffee so hopefully this black tea has caffeine, right? It's called Mango Magic and it's delish!
  17. I hope you had a lovely, orange King Day, Athena! How did your granddaughter do in the marathon, Muggle Not? The week has flown by yet again, but I'm glad for it as I'm tired of feeling stressed and unsettled at work. It'll be nice to relax and not think of such things this weekend! Hopefully tonight and the next next two days will move at a snail's pace. I'll be running errands and tomorrow night I'm going out for dinner with my friends to a place called 'George and the Dragon' I'm looking forward to it. Happy weekend, everyone!
  18. That's what I always think too when I remember my 1 trip to the UK, Kylie. 20 years ago in November! Oy... I'll have to post some photos of what I'm working on in my thread. I love doing it! I was just doing some checking and apparently Saturday is Independent Book Sellers Day so I'm excited to get some goodies while I shop .
  19. I love those covers, Noll! Very clever I loved Thirteenth Tale too, Kylie. Now you have two people waiting on you with bated breath, Bobbly! I started work on a tile mosaic last weekend so I haven't had time to start a new book. I'm going into the city on Saturday though and plan on visiting my favorite used book shop so I hope to find something then! Stay tuned...
  20. That's a crazy-long time to stay awake, Shirley, yikes! It's still obviously in the news here in Minneapolis, but his cause of death is still a mystery. There are still big crowds at Paisley Park, with lots of tributes and purple flowers and balloons decorating the fence surrounding his home/studio. Sad . RIP Prince.
  21. Mother's Day in the US is also on the 8th of May too, Athena . The first mother's/maternal figures who come to mind for me are Marilla Cuthbert in Anne of Green Gables, Caroline Ingalls in the Little House on the Prairie series and Mrs. March in Little Women. I might think of more as the day goes on...
  22. Time to live a little, Frankie! Let that TBR pile be quadruple *gasp* the size of your books read pile!
  23. I have Bellman & Black on my TBR shelf, Bobbly. I loved Setterfield's Thirteenth Tale so I'm looking forward to this one.
  24. Apple iPhone 5s owner here and I'm perfectly happy with it. I won't get the 6 because I hate large phones, but if and when the time ever comes I might get the new SE because thankfully Apple went back down to a smaller size. I'm really resistant to getting new phones though when something I have is still working perfectly. I've always liked the look of the Apple and the interface as well, and it's super fast which is important to me.
  25. Coolish and drizzly here all week, boo! But at least the grass is growing greener .
