I'll toss in my vote for Kite Runner also . I bought it awhile back and kept wondering what possessed me to do so . I guess I never thought life in Afghanistan would have much interest or appeal to me, but I ALWAYS get sucked in if a book wins an award or has Bestseller !!! plastered on the front . Boy ,am I glad I read it . SO very good, but also so very heartbreaking . Wonderful book .So,I went right out and got 1000 Splendid Suns and loved it too. It seemed to hit home even closer, maybe because it told more about the women's lives .... horrendous to even imagine living under those guidelines . ** I have the book, Snow, so if you choose it, I'll be watching to see what you think .

Hi Paun Can I ask if you are in India ? I noticed when you said the Death Road .. I have seen documentaries on a place in India called the same thing . It sure looks like scarey driving !

Back in my younger days I was a nurse. I still have my license but havent worked in many years . It was the most rewarding thing I have ever done in my life . I went from nursing into respiratory care, taking care of people with any type breathing disorder . After leaving nursing to stay home to raise the family, I worked part time on our ambulance squad in town . I wish I would have kept up my education ( not sure how the system works elsewhere, but here, you have to take continuing ed credits each year in order to be qualified to keep updated ),and I haven't done it for many years. Now that I am older and have so many health issues, I'd be unable to work or to even complete all the schooling I need . I haven't worked since then, just a housewife .

Hi Euphrasie I'm sorry to say I have never heard of this author until joining this group. I think there are several fans in here . I may just have to give it a try and see what I am missing !
-
Welcome Euphrasie It sounds like you chose a popular book to read. How are you liking it ?

Hi Michelle I'll be your cheerleader and maybe we can draft Bobbly to be another . Keep on going, you'll make it !
-
Hi Bobbly Great job on finishing !

What do you stubbornly refuse to read, and why?

I wouldn't be caught reading one of the cheap romance novels where the man and lady on the cover are half-NEKKID and they both look like they have been dipped in a VAT of french-fry grease . I would be way too embarassed to read one, nor would I want to . YEK . * I already have enough romance in my life...... * Been married since birth, or it seems like so . Joking about the romance . -
I just finished a book that I started on my Kindle awhile back . Seven Wives and Seven Prisons : Or Experiences in the Life of a Matrimonial Maniac A True Story ,Written by Himself Published in 1870 I like picking up those really odd Kindle books that were written long ago. This one was really hard to believe .It is supposed to be true, but I have never heard of a person having as many "adventures" in life as this fellow supposedly did . It may be true, but it was pretty far-fetched to me . Anyhow, at least I completed it . I'd give it 2 stars if only for the person who had that much imagination .

Okey Dokey --Thanks --

Hi Kell Would the Gregory Maguire books count, the retelling of fairy tales ,such as Wicked , etc ? Not sure if they'd be mash ups or fantasy or something else .
-
Oh, ok, thanks ,guys ~ I didnt understand what it meant .It almost sounded like a car -chase type book where they crash ? I'm a little slow on the uptake with the new type books. I think I saw one that was Abraham Lincoln,Vampire Killer or some such thing . Thanks for clearing it up for me .
-
Amen to that ! I think the older I get, the more I think about it. I keep on piling up more and more books here, then wonder if I'll be here long enough to read them all .
-
Hi Kell Sorry if someone has already asked ,but what is considered a mash-up book ? I'm a little fuzzy on that .

Yes, the thing about hindsight has probably been true in every presidency ever . There are probably lots of decisions that were made throughout the years that we were not privy to . I haven't read much on Robert's life myself,so it might be interesting to do some checking into it . I think Bobby was probably quite the thinker .He seemed to be maybe a little quieter,so maybe he spent more time thinking about things before deciding how to proceed . So sad that we never got to see what he could have done if he had lived long enough .

Hi Weave I just visited your blog and tried to post a hello, but I must need a blog or something to be allowed to comment,so I'll just comment on here . It sounds like you are excited about your first book selection,to have it picked out that far before it is published. Hope you enjoy it and have fun with the Challenge .

So true , there are just certain things that seem to trigger debates that sometimes get a little too heated . It truly is hard on message boards to voice an opinion without it sometimes coming out wrong . I'm glad we could talk this out . I do agree though,it's nice to hear other's opinions. Kinda makes you take a subject and look at it from different angles . That helps me to clear some of the cobwebs out of my brain if it hasn't been used enough lately .
-
I agree completely. It'd sure be a boring place if we all liked the same things ,wouldn't it ? I'm sorry if I brought up a touchy subject . I'll try to be more careful in the future . I'm just a YAKKER and sometimes talk (and post) too much .

Hi Mugglenot Thanks for telling me about the Grisham book .I've liked all the ones I read so far too . I'll pick another one up here one of these days . No problem with the library book,I understand that they are on more of a deadline,so they need to come first.

Hi Pontalba I learned long ago that it's not wise to discuss political beliefs especially on message boards . Rather than respond in the manner I would normally, let me just say that you and I each have a right to our own opinion and I will respect your right to believe as you do if you will respect mine . I understand what you are saying about the Chappaquiddick situation .I guess my only response will be that we might all make really stupid decisions if we are under the influence of alcohol . Not defending his behavior, just trying to understand how someone could use such poor judgement . I'd rather leave it at that, because I have seen many a small comment on a message board turn into a major battle . I like it here too much to do that . Said with all due respect ,

Dr Bill Glad to hear you liked Bleak House .That is on my pile for the coming year .I have loved all the Dickens books so far . He's long-winded, like me .... can rattle on and on before getting his point. Also like me . Frankie Don't blame you a bit for not liking the Heartbreaking Work book . It was awful . Maybe not the writing, but the subject matter and the way the author seemed to talk about it and deal with it . Seemed very off-color to me .
