  1. I just found this book yesterday, so it seemed like a signal to come home and find this post. I started it this morning. Didn't see the movie and probably won't . I'm not much of a movie fan. Books are always better .
  2. Here's a couple more : Zeke & Ned Follow the River
  3. Hi All Sorry if there is a separate thread for this book, but thought I'd place the question here . I just bought Under the Dome today. and was wondering if any of you have read it and what rating you'd give it ? It sure is a whopper of a book !
  4. Hi Kate I read Secret History several years ago and loved it . It starts out a little bit strangely, but picks up at one point ,so maybe you haven't reached that point yet . Hope you stick it out if possible .( But we all like different books, so maybe you won't like it as much as I did ). Good luck I finished Tales Behind the Tombstones yesterday and am now teetering between a library book, and Under the Dome (King) .It's a WHOPPER .
  5. Ok, books I have on my shelf that are about the West or set in the West : Plainsong - Haruf The Whistling Season -Doig Gates of the Alamo -Harrigan 1000 White women - Fergus A Sudden Country - Fisher Wild Times- Garfield On the Rez- Frazier Coal Black Horse - Olmstead Master Butcher's Singing Club- Erdrich The Wild Girl -Fergus Out Stealing Horses -Petterson A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains -Bird A Narrative of My Captivity -Kelly Shadow of the Sun- Matheson Wyatt Earp - Lake ~~~ I also just remembered another couple of EXCELLENT books set in the West -- first was a movie long ago with Dustin Hoffman - Little Big Man Return of Little Big Man by Thomas Berger BOTH excellent books .
  6. Poppy I'm glad you are also liking Sisters Brothers . I had to chuckle when you said your dad didn't exactly enjoy Brokeback Mountain. I think most of that age group would frown on it .I can't imagine my parents approving of something like that either . I grew up watching cowboy shows. They were really popular here back then, but not so much now. I can't even remember when the last western was on tv. We do occasionally have cowboy movies come out,but rarely . As for western books, our libraries all have western sections .A large majority are the Zane Grey type books and other real thin paperbacks . It probably isn't a very popular section .I rarely see people check them out . I'll look and see what I have here on hand that is a Western and come back in and post a list of them . I don't think I have very many, but I'll see . I put my list of westerns I own over in the thread -Is The Western Genre Dying Out ?
  7. Kell Hope you enjoy Sisters Brothers . I thought it was great . I kept thinking about how they could make this into a movie. I rarely ever watch movies ,but did keep thinking about how this could be a really neat one . Chrissy Hope you come out of your reading slump soon. Sometimes I'll pick up a really different type book ,which will make things click, and get me started reading again. It usually has to be a nonfiction book of some type .
  8. Next on the docket is : Tales Behind the Tombstones (Kindle book) Need a little bit of a break before tackling something that needs more brainpower .
  9. Hi Pontalba Yep, it was told just like a cowboy ,wasn't it ? I usually like books like that though ,so it was a perfect fit for me .
  10. Hi Roy Yea,nothing wrong with wanting to keep your books or make sure they find a good home . I might be among a small group of people who don't keep my books after I read them . I am like that with everything in my house. I don't like clutter or things laying around that are no longer used,so I make weekly trips to the local thrift store to donate any items I no longer want or use .
  11. Just finished Sisters Brothers. Loved it ~~ I know I was 53 pgs into God of Small Things, but after the above book, I need a little lighter reading to balance things out. Stay tuned .......

    Hello

    Hi Karen
  13. Right Easy Reader Good way of explaining it . I'm not quite sure how else to describe it ..I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who feels this way . Just something about books themselves ..
  14. I know 2 - English and Hillbilly ,which can sometimes be interchangeable .
  15. Wow, VF Hope they get it patched up quickly for you then, since you use it so much !
  16. I don't LEND books. I GIVE them away . I rarely ever re-read a book. There's only been a couple that I have read twice. Too many books waiting ,and the clock is ticking,so I need to keep finding and reading new books . So, once I have read a book, I'll give it to anyone .If I don't know anyone who wants it, I donate it to a used bookstore or library sale . I take really good care of my books. no dog-earing pages, writing in them, taking notes, spilling food or drink on them. It bugs me to read a book that is treated like that -- gross stains, dirty covers, bent pages or someone underlining words or sentences. Totally distracts me .
  17. Hi Ruth Some of my all time favorites are the same. They may start out with something really graphic or violent and I shut the book and don't want to read it,but then I open it back up and give it another try . Those are the ones that really stand out for me as all time favorites. If I can get past that first jolt, it is well worth continuing. I also have the Guilt Factor going on. If I BUY a book, I stand a much better chance of reading it. If it's a library book,it's much easier to take it back .No money lost .
  18. VF What was it doing ? Was it just plain not turning on, or doing something else freaky ? I have a kindle that probably would have the opposite of your problem : lack of use . I hate to say it,since I know so many people want one, or have one and love it,but I really just haven't had the connection with a kindle that I do with a book . On the other hand, the one really good thing about a Kindle is that if you are dying to get a new book ,you can press a button and there it is on your Kindle,so that part is nice . I'm not quite sure what it is. Maybe the pages, the smell of a book ,the feeling of a book in my hands? The Kindle seems to be so impersonal, maybe ,for lack of a better term. I don't feel as connected with it as I do with a book . It'd be kinda like having a crush on a PICTURE of George Clooney, rather than having him here in person . Just not the same connection .
  19. Ruth I loved Edgar Sawtelle. A wonderful story .Glad you stuck it out and finished it .
  20. Today I think I'll go back to The Sisters Brothers ,mainly because it's a library loan on my Kindle,so it needs to be done in a time frame . It also seems like it will be a quick read . The writing style is easy to follow,so that will save the last one ( God of Small Things) for a time when it is all I'm reading and I can concentrate on it more .
  21. Just an update on my current reads. The Don't Look Behind You " by Ann Rule is divided into sections, each telling a new story about a crime . In order to remember each part clearly, I'll just post a short review of part 1,which was 202 pgs. This part was called North to Alaska, and told of a cold case murder that had happened 30 years previously. A policeman decided to reinvestigate the case, with all the new DNA tools, etc . He solved the case and the murderer(s) were brought to justice. Can't give much more away than that . This was a case I hadn't heard of before,so it was interesting . It makes me wonder how someone could murder another person, then go ahead and live their lives for 30 years without it ever bothering them enough to tell someone or turn themselves in . I cannot imagine how a person could possibly do that . More to follow as I complete more of the stories .
  22. Pontalba Yes, I tell the Hubster that I like to STUDY people . It's really interesting to see what makes people tick, what ticks them off, how they dress, talk, everything. I could just be plain old NOSEY . Might have something to do with living in this same boring town for 53 years . Gotta have something to do for entertainment.
  23. Pontalba You definitely make Malevil sound very good ! I may just have to hunt that one up at some point. It probably isn't much like the TV show "Jericho" ? Not sure if you watched it or not,but I absolutely loved it . I have the dvd's and have about worn them out watching them. Not sure exactly how you'd classify it ,if it were a book. Kind of like a "what if" our country was attacked in several major cities and many people are killed. It's about a small town in Kansas and how they try to survive during this critical time. Thanks for mentioning another really good book to hunt for . * I think I will ask Santie to please bring me a new bookshelf .
  24. Pontalba You sound a bit like me with your current book. Sometimes if I am reading one and close to being done, I might have another laying here that I am anxious to start,so it's hard to keep on task with the first one . I agree, it's best to keep on pushing through with your other one, then you can start a new one . This IQ84 must be quite popular .Is it one about the end of the world, type book or am I mixing it up with another ? I have yet to read one like that, although I have The Passage here which I think is that type of story. I'm not sure why I bought it, other than I fall for any book that says BESTSELLER or AWARD WINNER . I don't even read what it's about, if it won an award, I buy it . Weird, huh ?
  25. Hi Pontalba Yes, I just started Sisters Brothers this morning. I went over to a little diner for some breakfast,so I took my Kindle with me and started it while there. I really like the way they are telling the story . I love western type stories anyhow, and this one seems a little unusual in the writing style. It's almost like an old cowboy is telling you the story. He kinda uses a sparse number of words, but he gets his point across .It's very cute . I've read all of Ann Rule's.This is another of her true crime files types(#15),so they are usually several stories in one book, usually a long one ,then some shorter stories . I have always liked true crime books. I like learning about WHY people do the things they do, and how they get caught . It's odd that I like true crime, but really don't have much interest in horror or made-up scarey books.
