Yes, I think Key West sounds so pretty . I'd love to see it someday . I knew he had lots of cats and the ancestors of the ones he had are still there at the house .
  2. Good to see you Devi I'm way behind , keeping up in here too .
  3. Pixie You're doing wonderful with your reading this year ! At least you are almost even with the number you've read vs the number you've bought ,so you're at a good pace . I also read some of the Grafton books. started with A and got up through H , I think was the last one I read .

Thanks Pixie I'll take a look at them !
  5. Will be thinking of you as you go to your next apt, Devi !
  6. Sebastian Barry's books sound so good ! Why haven't I tried one before ? Next time I hit the library, I need to look him up .Wasn't he the one who wrote The Secret Scriptures, too ? Note to self : Write down good-sounding books in a notebook. Stick the notebook in my purse .

Kate Perfectly understandable . Different Strokes, as they say ! I don't read a lot of funny ones ,and the ones I have enjoyed are older . I've liked all the Bryson books I've read ,and loved Lewis Grizzard . Ate them all up in a few weeks time when I discovered him ! The only recent ones I liked were Karl Pilkington's ,mainly because I like travel writing with some humor thrown in .

Pixie I don't recognize the author you're talking about ,but I like books that make you laugh that hard . I haven't found very many really funny ones lately. I guess that's something I should hunt for .

Hi Guys Yea , I guess sometimes it is interesting to learn more about an author's life , even if you haven't read much by them . I know very little about Hemingway , but maybe one of these days I'll pick up something by him and give it a try . I like hearing old stories like the one I posted. Pretty neat . I can't imagine any famous authors doing that in today's age .

Hey guys Not sure if any of you are Hemingway fans . I hate to say it but I have yet to read one book by him. Anyhow, I found this little story online about him and one of his admirers ( from 1934). It's very interesting, and gives a list of books Hemingway recommended to the guy . I also hate to say I haven't read even one on the list ! It's a really cute story though ! http://www.openculture.com/2013/05/ernest_hemingways_reading_list_for_a_young_writer_1934.html

KM Yes, I've heard of the book you mentioned but haven't read it . It sounds very interesting . Maybe I'll have to hunt it up one of these days and give it a try ! Thanks for reminding me of it .
  12. Alexi I love Robert Goddard, but haven't read the book you mentioned, or the last few of his . Not sure why, other than I just have too many books waiting and haven't gotten to them yet . I really enjoy his books, and they are hard to categorize. A bit of mystery, suspense ,but a whole lot more meat to them than the normal type books in that genre.

    Hi I'm Clare

Welcome Clare, Hope you enjoy it here ! That dancing sounds fun ! Do you wear a special costume for it ?
  14. Dtr Good idea. I've also wanted to do this , so will be watching with interest . In regards to your above post about not remembering to reserve a slot to post your lists, just go into post 1 and you can edit it as you get ideas from others about what books to read for each country . That'd work ok, I think . There are 2 I can think of that take place in the Newfoundland area, but not sure you'd want to count them for Nova Scotia. They are CLOSE to Nova Scotia : The Shipping News- Anne Proulx Colony of Unrequited Dreams - Wayne Johnston Then : Fall on Your Knees - Anne Marie MacDonald (Cape Breton Island ) -- Not sure on the map where that is in relation to Nova Scotia ... India The main ones I've read that come to mind are Rohinton Mistry's books : A Fine Balance Family Matters Good luck !

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who doesn't watch many movies. I thought most people enjoyed them ! I guess I think the saying that the book is better than the movie convinces me .

Thanks Frankie, I'll keep it in mind. Maybe someday I'll at least read the book . I don't know what it is about me and movies . There are very few that I have watched. I used to like the funny ones when John Candy, Chevy Chase, the guy from Stripes.. Geez, see, I can't even remember the names of the stars . I also liked Rodney Dangerfield's movie, Easy Money. I guess you could say I don't watch movies that have any SUBSTANCE or story line ... just something funny to make me laugh .
  17. Thinking of you Devi -- don't give up !
  18. Kay I hope you enjoy A Very Long Engagement . I have wanted to read it for ages .
  19. Kay If you need a feather duster for your book thread, I need to dust mine with a bulldozer !

  24. KM The Sea sounds very good ! Next time I get a new book I'll keep that one in mind ! All of Banville's sound interesting. I'm not sure why I've never tried one of them before ?
