  1. I'm loving the Amazon Daily Deal, and will be sure to check in every day. I can't see how long it runs for - hopefully forever? Last year at Christmas, they did the Twelve Days of Kindle, where a selection of books were available for £1 for 12 days. I bought quite a few as they had some very popular titles. Hopefully they'll do it again this year.
  2. Still reading 11/22/63, and loving it. Also bought A Visit From the Goon Squad, as it is on Amazon's daily deals today.
  3. ^ Have now added this to my wishlist. It's the kind of topic that interests me, though reading physics books can give me a headache!
  4. I'm in the middle of the series at the moment (just finished Goblet of Fire), and I love them. They are definitely getting better as the series carries on, and I'm disappointed that I only have 3 books left to read. I'm kind of drawing them out a bit, rather than reading them back to back, though it is tempting. I say give them a go. What do you have to lose?
  5. Really getting into 11.22.63. It's so much more than just the JFK assassination.
  6. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - JK Rowling This is by far my favorite in the series so far. Harry Potter is entered (by someone unknown to him) into the Triwizard Tournament, which is to be held at Hogwarts. The Tournament consists of 3 tasks, and a selected member from each school (three of them) must compete to win the final trophy. Harry, being too young to enter, is still selected (along with another competitor) to represent Hogwarts. He must find a way to survive the tournaments, all the while with the ever growing presence of Voldemort looming in the background. I found this book to be a bit faster paced than the others, and just that little bit more exciting. I am loving the main characters more and more as the series goes on, and I can't wait to see what they are like at the end of the whole series. I've yet to watch the movie, but will probably get around to it today. 5/5
  7. A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens Classics are not my favorite type of book, though I thought I'd give this one a go as I have seen the film (can't remember which version) many times when I was kid, and loved it. The story is quite simple. Scrooge is a miserable old git, nasty to anyone and everyone. Then just before Christmas he is visited by the ghost of his old business partner, and is told that he will be visited by 3 more spirits, The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. After these visits, he undergoes a 'spiritual' change, altering his outlook and attitude towards others. Before I started, for some reason I thought this would be quite a hefty read. I don't know how many pages it is (as I read the Kindle version), but it couldn't have been more than 200, if that. This was a simple story, but with a very important message told in an endearing way. Everyone should read this book at least once. Even if you are familiar with the story it is still an enjoyable read. 4/5
  8. Mushrooms stuffed with Mediterranean style grilling cheese. Yummo!
  9. The American (from Amazon.com) version for the Kindle comes with Audio/Video, which I can't quite figure out, as you can't watch videos on a Kindle.
  10. Hi Julie - I preordered it for my Kindle, and it was automatically downloaded the day of release. I'm only on the first few chapters but it's good so far.
  11. Finished The Picture of Dorian Gray and have now started Stephen King's latest: 11.22.63
  12. Got Stephen King's new one on my Kindle. Just have to finish The Picture of Dorian Gray; then I can get started on it.
  13. I have just struggled through Chapter 11 last night and have to say I agree 100%. It almost put me off finishing the book, and just felt completely out of place. Having said that, I'm now on Chapter 12 and all seems better!
  14. I am reading this at the moment. I'm not a huge fan of Classics - I find them very difficult to read - but this is one of the better ones. I'm only a quarter of the way through, and the real story has yet to begin, but I'm finding it very deep and thought-provoking.
  15. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkhaban. Loved it!
  16. Hi Janet - I'm a big Stephen King fan, but prefer his earlier stuff. I find some of his later work to be quite dire, Cell included. It was probably not the best book of his to get started on. My favourites are The Stand and IT, but for more recent books, Under The Dome was very good and thought by many to be a return to his old form. He has a new one about to come out next week, called 11.22.63, about someone who goes back in time to try to prevent the JFK assassination. The Stand is his most popular book, so I would start there, though it is a very chunky read and not what I would call fast-paced. Really, anything from his earlier catalog should give a fair idea of his style. He definitely has changed over the years!
  17. I love that book by Bill Bryson, and finished it recently. For general science, how about Carl Sagan? He's quite a popular author and easily accessible. For physics, Stephen Hawking is probably the most mainstream choice. For Natural History, how about Richard Fortey? I haven't read any of his books, but Bryson mentions him a fair bit in A Short History of Nearly Everything.
  18. Sorry to hear your bad news, VanessaL. Best wishes to your partner. I have just finished Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and for me it is the best in the series so far. I feel like starting the next one, but I know I probably won't finish it by the time Stephen King's new book comes out next week. So, I have opted for The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. I am also reading bits of 50 Facts That Should Change The World by Jessica Williams. I was trying to read Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond, but really struggled. I think part of it may be because it is a paper book, and I'm getting so used to my Kindle.
  19. Sounds like a brilliant read. I've added it to my wishlist.
  20. To eat chocolate, or to not eat chocolate? :-s

  21. I have just ordered a waterproof case for mine, so I can now read in the bath. That's one thing I have missed. Nothing as relaxing as soaking in the bath with a good book.
  22. The new Kindle is out in the UK already, and is £89. You can see all the specs on Amazon. A co-worker has recently bought one, and it looks pretty good, a bit smaller than mine which is the keyboard one.
  23. Finished A Christmas Carol and have started Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It's good to read another Harry Potter - I missed those characters.
  24. No, never read it before, but I have seen the movie (can't remember which version) many many times. Growing up it was a bit of a Christmas tradition to watch it on TV. I'm enjoying it so far, but I'm surprised by how short it is. I don't think it's an abridged version, but for some reason I thought it was going to be quite a big book. Maybe because it's a classic, and I've always thought of most classics as being quite hefty books. I read Red Leaves recently and loved it. Glad you enjoyed it - it was very moving, wasn't it?
  25. Nooo, I don't want to go to work tomorrow. I've had such a nice week off. :-(
