  1. Nice review of Of Mice and Men. I read this in high school, but would like to read it again as an adult. I liked the movie too (the one directed by Gary Sinise). I recently read The Grapes of Wrath and thought it was brilliant. I keep meaning to read his other work, but things keep getting in the way.
  2. Bought some PS3 games yesterday - Uncharted 3, Bioshock Infinite, LA Noire and Resistance 3. I'm playing my way through LA Noire at the moment and it's pretty good.
  3. I read this a couple of years ago, and was disappointed considering all the fuss that was made about it when it was released. Hopefully you will enjoy it more than I did. Reading and loving The Rosie Project at the moment.
  4. I just finished Extinction Point, so I will be starting The Rosie Project next. I'm really looking forward to it!
  5. Thanks! I'm sure I will - I don't think I've read a negative review yet!
  6. I have to say, I found it got worse (the unconnectedness of it) as it went on, and I really struggled with the last section of it. I think it's safe to say that it won't be on my favourites of the year list. Ok, I've given in and bought The Rosie Project. I'm partway through Extinction Point by Paul Anthony Jones and will make it my next read after that.
  7. Thanks, Pontalba. Yes, I was disappointed with the direction the story took, but at least it was an easy enough read.
  8. Nice review of Dune. I agree with a lot of what you say and I too enjoyed the first part of the book a lot more than the second part . Interesting that you say you enjoyed being thrown in the deep end....I hated that. I get so frustrated when words and phrases are used that I have absolutely no understanding of. I can feel myself getting quite uptight when I read things that I just don't get. I also have Boneshaker on my TBR pile - hope you enjoy it.
  9. Why is the weekend over so quickly?

So that you can have something to look forward to on Monday ;-)

  10. Nice review of Dark Matter. It has been on my radar for a little while, and I thought I had bought it, but apparently not. It wasn't even on my Amazon wishlist (well, it is now ), which surprised me as well as I thought I'd added it a while back.
  11. I'm about 80% through Life After Life. My mind keeps wandering while I'm reading it, and by the time I realise, I have to back-track to see what I missed.
  12. No kidding, so you'll have to pardon my apparent ignorance. In the UK, the Amazon warehouse is run and co-ordinated mostly by people, not robots, and it seems to work fine.
  13. It took me a little while to find my place with it (about 15% through). Part of the problem was that I thought it was a sequel to Case Histories, and so as I was reading it I was trying to work out how they would be connected (it was really confusing me because the books are set decades apart ). Finally realised they have nothing to do with each other, so I can now stop puzzling over it. There's a lot to be said for skimming a synopsis before you start reading!
  14. I've ended up starting Life After Life by Kate Atkinson. Not too heavy but not too light either. The non-fiction ones I am reading are The Etymologicon by Mark Forsyth, and Stuffed and Starved: From Food To Fork: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System by Raj Patel. Both are very good, but they are the kind of books you almost have to study, rather than read, because they are so in depth. As interesting as they are, it makes me delay reading them, because I'm busy enough with my study books as it is.
  15. Nice review. I bought this the other day (£0.99 on Kindle - bargain!), and will be reading it soon. In fact I was going to start it today, but felt more in the mood for Life After Life instead. I might make it my next read, depending on if I feel like something a bit heavy.
  16. I'll be making a start on Life After Life by Kate Atkinson later.
  17. Hello Virginia, and welcome (back) to the forum!
  18. Hello DJ, and welcome to the forum!
  19. That was really interesting. I had no idea they used robots....I assumed it was done by hand.
  20. Finished The Slap, and I've just updated my purchases for the year. Sixteen so far, which isn't too bad. At least they are all books that I really want to read. I've also read sixteen books so far this year, so that kind of evens itself out (wasn't a conscious planned thing either). I'm struggling what to read next. I have two non-fictions on the go (one I have been reading since before Christmas), but they are quite heavy reading and I'm in the mood for something light.
  21. I'm about halfway through and it's a bit better now. I think it was one character in particular who I couldn't stand. I know they are showing various viewpoints, and I'm only through the 4th person's chapter, but it doesn't seem to be balanced viewpoints with the beliefs behind those views being expressed in a reasoning manner. From what I have read so far It just seems to me that the author is saying that anyone who isn't against someone smacking a child must be deranged like Harry is. Then again, I'm only half way through, and I have another 4 viewpoints to read, so maybe there will be a bit more depth later on. At the moment, it seems like it's all shock-value material, rather than an informed debate about a controversial topic.
  22. I've read Airframe a couple of times, and really enjoyed it (though I was slightly disappointed the second time around).
  23. I couldn't finish The Fault In Our Stars, but I loved Paper Towns. I found the characters in The Fault In Our Stars far too 'clever' with their way of speaking, so it didn't ring true for me. Paper Towns was very original.
  24. Thanks, Alexi. I'm in the minority for not loving A Monster Calls....most people seem to really take to it.
  25. The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult is £0.99 on Kindle. Great bargain, and lucky for me as I only added it to my wishlist a couple of days ago after reading your review.
