Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris Amazon Synopsis Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She's quiet, keeps to herself, and doesn't get out much - not because she's not pretty - she's a very cute bubbly blonde - or not interested in a social life. She really is . . . but Sookie's got a bit of a disability. She can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill: he's tall, he's dark and he's handsome - and Sookie can't 'hear' a word he's thinking. He's exactly the type of guy she's been waiting all her life for. But Bill has a disability of his own: he's fussy about his food, he doesn't like suntans and he's never around during the day . . . Yep, Bill's a vampire. Worse than that, he hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, with a reputation for trouble - of the murderous kind. And then one of Sookie's colleagues at the bar is killed, and it's beginning to look like Sookie might be the next victim . . . I bought this book as I'm a big fan of the TV series & I have to say I really enjoyed it. It is a little different fom the programme Tara doesn't feature in the book at all & Bubba who isn't in the show is a fun addition to the story. I thought the book was a fun, sexy read a great one to take on holiday as it's an easy read so a good one for the beach

When that happens to me it's usually staring me in the face, can't see the wood for the trees Is this the story of the guy who acted as a human bridge for people to escape ?

Hope you enjoy The Book Thief Tunn I thought it was really good read

I so need to bump this up my reading list but because I've read that it takes a long time for the story to get going I'm worried that it'll kill my mojo.
-
Had a little look at the list Frankie most of them I haven't read but Steppenwolf I read when I was much younger I didn't really enjoy it I think it was a bit over my head & Cocaine Nights I have on my TBR pile
-
Oh they would definitely have been left on the shelf in that case

I think My Life in Books would've worked better if they'd had only one guest at a time & had it more like Desert Island Discs on R4, only the Snows seemed to gel well together probably because they're father & son. I would have liked to have heard more from Jeanette Winterson, Trevor Macdonald & Hardeep Singh (think that was his name) & would've given Sister Wendy & Lawrence Llewelyn Bowen a miss. I did enjoy Faulks on Fiction although I could have done without him telling me so much of the storylines especially Gormenghast which is on my TBR pile I watched a couple of the episodes of the book programme( can't remember which channel it's on) with Jo Brand but I didn't really like it , it seemed like the presenters & guests were picked because the producers thought they'd appeal to more people rather than because they were people who loved books & reading but I think that the only people who watch programmes like these are people who already love books anyway.

So glad you enjoyed The Help & I agree with your comments on the other thread it is the sort of book that gets under your skin, my hubby loved it too & is now reading Bury The Chains The British Struggle to Abolish Slavery by Adam Hochschild which he says is fascinating stuff so I guess The Help got under his skin as well

I know how you feel Now that I'm keeping a list of the books I'm buying I can see how out of control my book buying has got. Charity shops are my downfall if I had to pay full price for the books there's no way I'd have so many but then again I found books that I've really enjoyed that I just wouldn't have bought if I had to get them new. That's what I was thinking, you could always try alternating what books you read choosing one from your pre 2010 pile then one of your more recently bought ones that way at least you'd feel that you were making progress with clearing your back log. TBH I've given up hope of ever getting my mountain down to manageable proportions but I console myself with the thought that at least I'm good at getting rid of them once I've read them:) By the way I have a couple of Pat Barkers , Regeneration & Another World on my TBR pile & I bought Treasure Island as well recently.

Yes, I've got Lost In A Good Book & First Among Sequels so I will read them but not sure when
-
It's one of my favourite reads this year so far, I'm going to pass it on to my sister as I know she'll love it too

Halfway through Dead Until Dark already it's a nice easy read

The Eyre Affair Jasper Fforde Waterstones Synopsis There is another 1985, somewhere in the could-have-been, where the Crimean war still rages, dodos are regenerated in home-cloning kits and everyone is deeply disappointed by the ending of 'Jane Eyre'. In this world there are no jet-liners or computers, but there are policemen who can travel across time, a Welsh republic, a great interest in all things literary - and a woman called Thursday Next. In this utterly original and wonderfully funny first novel, Fforde has created a fiesty, loveable heroine and a plot of such richness and ingenuity that it will take your breath away. The Eyre Affair is a very clever & funny book it's very different from anything I've read before , I loved Mycrofts inventions & Spike from the Vampire & Werewolves Disposal Division & I'd really like to read a book about his adventures. I did enjoy the book but not as much as I thought I would but I think that it's just a matter of personal taste rather than the quality of the writing. 3/5

English Passengers Matthew Kneale Waterstones Synopsis 'A big, ambitious novel with a rich historical sweep and a host of narrative voices. Its subject is a vicar's ludicrous expedition in 1857 to the Garden of Eden in Tasmania, [as] meanwhile, in Tasmania itself, the British settlers are alternately trying to civilise and eliminate the Aboriginal population ...The sort of novel that few contemporary writers have either the imagination or the stamina to sustain' - "Daily Telegraph". I'd had this book on my TBR pile for awhile & probably wouldn't have picked it out before others if my hubby hadn't read it first & recommended it. I found the book to be both funny & sad, the vicar & Dr Potter were my favourite characters, both are pompous & their constant rivalry is hilarious. But the story of the damage done to the Aboriginal population by the British settlers is horrifying, it isn't a subject I really knew anything about so I felt that I learned something from the book as well. 5/5

Finished The Eyre Affair will add my thoughts about it to my book log later. I was at a bit of a loss what to start next but have plumped for Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris.
